    Happy Satan's sketches - UPDATE 15.1.11

Hi everyone. I'm an animation student from Israel.

I feel my drawing skills have come to a standstill, and after gathering courage for a few days, I've finally decided to delurk here and ask for your help and\or support on my journey to see how far I can go if I work a bit harder...
I will spare you my nervous rambling and get to the drawings...

Critiques, of course, are very much welcomed, needed, and appreciated.

p.s. - these sketches are mostly from photo reference (cept for the colour ones, those are from imagination). I will scan in my model figure drawings later this week.

oh hi and welcome to CA, you've got some very beautiful sketches there, I really like all your digital work (oh, and the self-portraits).
With all kinds of drawings (life drawings, thumbnails, anatomy) you are already on a good way

The only tipp I can give you is to chill out with your lines and try to either get more self-confidence and control in them or go into the other direction and have a precise but searching line. The linequality looks random now, most of the figures get that fuzzy look, this doesn't look good on quick gestures like the guitar player
I just took a break to post this.
But sometimes I also draw stuff

Stuff looks great, especially the pose sheet, the movement in that is incredible. I really like that first greyscale piece as well. I think line quality is the only thing I can see that obviously needs work, but I think a lot of tht comes with confidence.
Oh, I get the impression that you work quite quickly, maybe try slowing down and really spend some time on a piece, observing everything thoroughly and placing your lines accordingly. It may not be useful at all, but I'm always being told to speed up, so it may be worth you having a go at slowing down.
Otherwise I would say keep it going, the sketches from life especially

    new sketches!

It's been ages... I'm a lazy, bad person, and tend to let my swamped schedule get the best of me. I will try this again...

resulting from the previous comments, i HAVE tried working on my lines a bit, but towards the end of the year our model classes have been canceled (makes me think what i'm paying this school for) and i neglected my figure drawing pretty badly... So this is mostly work from this summer.

i still feel that while i manage to capture likeness and sometimes movement, my drawings lack any elegance. like i'm trying to make a wood sculpture with an axe... i guess i just don't really know what i want from myself.

looking good so far, lots of improvement in the last post. the skull at profile is great, proly the best one there in my opinion. perhaps you rush these a bit? try to slow down and go from light to dark? maybe longer life studies of objects? never be afraid to erase and redraw anything, ever. fix your mistakes, and really learn from them. self-portraits are a good way to go. hope some of that helped, at any rate, keep it up. your getting better. =)

ok so i accidentally posted without attaching the drawings to it... O.O happens.

Virus - thanks. i did try to do smtng longer this week. we had a 1 hr pose during the session and i managed to work on one sketch for 40 and another for 20 mins, things i'm not really used to...
I've given up on self portraits because i've decided, after about 40 attempts, that i don't really look like anything and would be better off trying to get stronger on other subjects. maybe one day i will become good enough to reach my likeness...

so, umm, first one is 2 min gesture drawing.

I'm beginning to think i should start drawing bigger. maybe it'd give me more room for detail and finesse.

p.s. - are the pictures i upload too big for convenient viewing? O.o

I feel i'm not very strong with colour. this took me way too long (1.5 hrs) and i keep feeling like i'm missing out on the nuances. help?

    thanks, dudes.
i'm now kinda coming to terms with the idea that i don't really suck as much as i think, i just need to practice more... so here's more practice. something quick before going to bed last night. A slightly rotten peach and an mp3 player.

    nekkid ladeh!

this is my first time painting a model in colour - i was really excited about bringing my laptop to the class (well, not class per se: some other animation students from around town have decided not to depend on our school for model classes, and hired a model for 3 hr sessions every tuesday. everyone pitches in and it's very nice). so I was all about trying to get used to painting in colour from a live model. I do hope i'll manage to "get used" to it without getting stuck with one boring way of doing it, though...

i've got a long way to go to get to where i wanna be, but i'm pretty pleased with today's work. The last 2 are the best, i feel, but still, i realize, strongly lacking in contrast.

I might go back and refine those a bit more later, some are really rough because the poses were a bit short and i got carried away picking colours...

    Amaaaazing.

How could you think you sucked at all!?!?

The model studies are beautiful, you're really tuning your eye to those different colors - and damn, that peach is great, even if it's rotten. > You're extremely inspiring, a reminder that I'm slacking waaaay too much.

    Hope you post more soon!!

It's good to see your dedication! I particularly like the skulls on post #7 -- they're very solid and show good sense of structure --, as well as the apple and peach. I also like the gestures on post #7 -- in my opinion, they are more lively and more solid than the more recent ones on post #9, in which you seemed more concerned with the contours than the actual gesture. But well, I am just a beginner myself -- and self-taught, to boot.. --, so take these observations for what they're worth. I admire your dedication, and look forward for more

Fantastic work! I love your studies. I particularly like the piece in which you drew the prince from Hellboy 2~ Dynamism is awesome.

Your last lifedrawing (in digital colour!) is fantastic- my favourites are the second and fifth pieces. ^^ Please keep continuing!
it's not the end that matters but the journey

I really like your life drawing studies I feel like there's a lot of intensity behind your brush strokes, especially their expressions.

    new things!!

back again after a year's absence, as usual, only this time it's the middle of the school year.

well, a lot's been going on and i'm working on my graduation project now (concept art to be posted in my sketchbook thread). you can see our production blog here: http://lucidupdate.blogspot.com/

anyways, i've been doing a lot of work in this year's figure drawing course.

    here's some of it.

mb i'll scan in my terrible pencil work as well. i'm amazingly bad at drawing large scale things on paper. i think too many years of diddling with the A5 sized Intuos have killed any big-scale skills i might have previously had... : / i promised the teacher i'll stop fucking around with the laptop and bring paper next time.

some quick figure studies from Posemaniacs.com & from screenshots of some movies i had on the comp atm.

30 sec ones seem to be more expressive than 90 sec ones...
the bigger drawings of the movie characters are like 3 minutes each...

    also random sketchbook stuff.
