I haven't been active in a long time, and never really had a collected thread other than the DSG one.

Did this this morning and figured I'd start a sketchbook here.

Started off, had a plan, spiraled into meaningless scribbles, and then took form and polished it a bit. Spent far too long on it for what it is.
If I were to rework it, it would be from a lower angle to show scale better, and I'd like to have more dappled lighting on the creatures through the trees.

I need better tree shortcut techniques and better lighting.

I need to rethink this guy's name.
Made him up and drew him all over the margins of my Art History book in college.

Clearly owning the Hogarth lighting book does not automatically make you awesome at it.

More nonsense scribbles taking some form.
This started to look vaguely like the chestburster from alien, so I changed the tongue into a head, which became Boba Fett's helmet for no good reason.

Another scribble turned rough painting. I need to be more deliberate with my color. I tried to remedy that partway through. You may or may not be able to tell.

I love the giant grubs pic. I'm not sure about the tree in it, doesn't seem to add much. But overall a really cool feel from that picture.
And in your last pic, I think you added way too much steam, obstructing too much of the octopus.

Keep posting more work.

The tree was there for scale, or that was the intent anyway.

I hear ya on the steam. It should be more "froth and glistening tentacles" than "airbrushed fog". Did you watch any of the videos?

It looks to me like they are sorta coming out of the cave, so I would remove the tree, make the cave opening a bit bigger and drop some shadows on the backs of dem grubs, from said cave. That should make them big and menacing, I think they are kinda cute though..

Yes I did watch your octopus one. Just seemed like you got too frustrated in the end and just fogged it up, and I thought it was too bad, since it looked good with all the tentacles in the clear view.

But yeah just throwing my thoughts at ya on that one.

Scribbles to juxtaposed character morphology. Started penguin-ish, on the left, platypus is funnier. You can see in this video me trying to fix bad tangents and character balance, and recognizing that the bird's left hand is garbage, then deciding not to fix it.

I figured for today's sketch, I would check in on conceptart.org's daily sketch group topic.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's been updated in about a month, but I'm doing the last topic anyway.
"Sci-Fi • CYBER-PHANTOM AT REST IN ITS CHARGING SARCOPHAGUS" seemed like a good excuse to do a quick Necron sketch. I'm partial to Anrakyr the Traveler. Putting him on a barge fit the theme... and since he doesn't sleep, I figured having him just pondering made sense.

Fun sketchbook so far. Post #12 is probably my favorite.

I feel that the perspective in some of your posts could be stronger. You could probably benefit from more perspective studies. Also, mirroring the images as you work on them seems to help with perspective--I watched some of your videos, and you don't seem to do much image flipping.

Fair point. I'd love to actually be really able to push into the full-on fish eye look. I like seeing that (when it's not gimmicky) when it's done well. I'll try to keep the flip in mind, good tip.
