. i don´t really like dev.art- its to much a contest of popularity, all these guys "hey, blablabla ...check out my gallery [link] ...don´t like that.
todays´stuff. finally started with the school work. so i only drew...erm 4 h^^
I agree with you about the shmoozing at Deviant Art.
I have a long winded suggestion for you to help capture the likeness better in your referenced portraits. Try doing one upside down, flip your reference and draw it that way...then when you are done turn things rightside up.
Each hemisphere of our brains is different and seperate, the left brain is analytical and calculating working like a computer to sort and organize. The right brain is creative, musical, whimsical. It has no concept of time, and its the perfect copy machine...when the right brain is controlling the fine muscles of our fingers and wrists to draw and paint we end up with something much closer to what we see in our minds eye or what we see right in front of us.
A lot of times the lines go in the wrong way, and angles get wrong because your left brain is taking over from your right brain - insisting that it knows what so and so looks like, it starts to ignore the reference and overpower your hand to put lines where it wants instead of where they should go. An example would be when drawing a chair from still life...your left brain says "hey thats a chair, I know what chairs look like." and it will flood you with a zillion different chairs just like if you were to google "chair". Even though the chair you want to draw is right in front of you.
Your right brain is less opinionated and is where most artists want to be to really get the image down from your source, whether it is photo or imagination or right in front of you.
Turning the reference upside down can make your left brain throw up its arms and give up because it has a tougher time recognizing it for what it is...allowing you to more easily draw from your right brain.
Another way you can achieve this is to cover most of the reference with a sheet of paper with a hole cut in it and only draw the bits that show through...moving the hole around to eventually draw the whole thing.
Take away the left brains ability to analyze, compare, sort and control by removing its ability to recognize the subject and your right brain will be right there to work its miracles.
Villager: It's a witch, burn the witch!
Hero: *Bang*
Villager: That works to
Keep up the good work, hmm work, I better get back to work actually.![]()
woooohaaaaaaa! i´m ardent! thank you very much tomcardin , again!
Dylan: XD awesome comment

Down is the New Up- Radiohead http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CX7Qzb1dj8
I should try this upside down drawing.
HELL! school stuff is more that i´ve expectedor, well, actually i expected that XD
stuff i´ve done today-i hate it!colors etc. suck
spent the rest of the day on the schoolwork-tomorrow will be the same. it´s a pity that the vacations end on monday.it was an amazing time, i´ve never drawn so much, never learned so much, never had more fun with drawing.
anyway i experience one thing: the better you are, the more fun you have! it´s amazing...doodles, graphic paintings-doesnt matter what. better than i´ve ever expected.
it´ll be a long way, but i was never surer, that I can get at it.
what can i get??? i don´t have a clue! but i can get at it.
even this one is awful![]()
I don't think that's nessisarly true, it's just a good feelings knowing you are getting better and reaching your goals! I find it quite liberateing to ocationally doodle awful awful stuff, for example this! http://dy-lanea.deviantart.com/art/Portrait-131722440
Be sure to doodle in the margins of your notes =)
And nahhh that doodle you did isnt awful.
Seems to be going good! Keep up the work
Glad you're learning a lot, that's what should be happening!

To me, this shows the most improvement: http://conceptart.org/forums/attachm...1&d=1252449648 It seems much more painterly than the others which I think is what you should strive for instead of drawing and then splashing some values on the sketch. Try taking more time with these value studies, really trying to get the correct value ranges. Eyedrop the three main values if you have to (dark, midtone, light) just so you know your range. If you check post #152, I think you should do half the amount of the portraits, but try and make them as much like the photo as possible, both in values and proportions. I guess I'm saying quality over quantity hereKeep it up

Bwahah I've been feeling so pumped lately because of you guys!
Anyways good stuff man, was listening to a stream Bobby Chiu was doing the other day and he said something that I have started to realize to. He said when you are learning, your not focusing on this or that. Your doing EVERYTHING. Drawing, painting, faces, anatomy, figures, gestures, environments, lines, tones, artist studies, imagination drawing, life drawing, self portraits, public drawing, still lifes. Shoot I can't think of anything else =( Animal drawings?
Everything!
I kind of notice that here to, in the people that are really improveing fast, there doing everything =S
Anyways it's 3am here I'm going to nap for a few hours then force my self up to do some drawing. raahhh!
oh fuck, i have to be more efficiency.i´m spending too much time in the internet. today: schooool, morning, midday, afternoon
all i´ve draw. tomorrow i´lll spent some time on and value-anatomy study(just write that, so i don´t forget), landscape from ref. and mind.
and i hope to work on the last portrait study.
2nd: donuthad to draw it strange midtones(used ref.)
and a selfportrait, wanted to look, like i´m thinking about sth. but now it looks like a crying dog.(note: do a self portrait tomorrow, too. till they are gettin´better)
@dylan: i´m nealry doing none anatomy, i´ll start with it in 2 or 3 weeks, when my selfportraits and portraits in general are better.
oh, and one important thing: A NAP IS NEVER ALWAYS GOOD! hell, yeah, for sure!
g´night
I love naps, I can sleep very little during the night then just take a few 20 min naps during the day when I find my energy is gone.
I know what you mean about wasting time on the internet, lately I have been good with it but I used to just waste SO much time on it.
One thing I suggest that I'm going to do later on tonight before my self portrait is do a few pages of face studies from bridgeman, loomis, Kevin Chens class demos. They break down the face so I can understand the structure more. So when I do my portrait maybe ill be more confident with my shading. Ill be like "ya that is definitely that form!" Not "ehh, I'm not really sure" Anyways we will see
Another thing is be conscious of the values you are choosing. Are you using a full range of values? Lighter tones? Darker tones? How does these values make this composition feel?

BRUSHEFFICIENCY IS THE CLUE! i think thats an issue with all you portraits..the brushwork looks kinda "chunky"....just paint a portrait and dont care too much about structure and stuff!!! keeep goin, man![]()

Woooo oh yeah look at your powers! I can see improvement in your brushstrokes as well which is great! Check out Bobby Chiu's podcasts on youtube if your feeling demotivated. Bobby Chiu's had the most impact on me as an artist and what it truely means to go for what you want.
