Here is the final for an illustration I worked on in seeecret. I spent one day sketching concepts for the creature(s) and two days painting it up for the "your last days" contest over at Deviant Art. I went with a reclamation of nature kind of theme, like those nature-taking-over-the-city illustrations you always see. I decided to take that idea and make it, you know, all bad ass. I did totally forget to put a tribal tattoo on the beasts arm. Oh, and a scar above his right eye. Fuck, I didn't put a single pocket or belt in the image either. Concept art fail!

I basically took my last illustration for Mike Bierek's class and gave it another go, putting everything I learned about arranging your values into one whirl-wind reinterpretation. Pretty fun. I included a couple detail shots too. I accidentally down-sized this image from 4995px wide to 1000px. Freaked out, blew it back up and realized my loose chalk-only approach rendered the misstep irrelevant. I literally lost nothing

That last painting is looking really good man, colors and perspective are working well. That creature guys values seem a bit off making him look outta place. Your stuff is coming a long nicely though dude, kkeep it up.

dawnielc, luckers, taepo: thanks! composition has always been a weak point for me. i may have moved from useless to simply lackluster in the last few months, at least ;p

pyro. yeah, definitely agree there. i pushed him into the shadow a bit more and then threw some "sunlight through the leaves" kind of spotlights on him to pop him back out. haven't quite gotten him there yet.

added a few more characters. have to figure out that blank area in the center, tho.

The last image is cute! I think some reds in the mouth(maybe the same value as the shorts on the boy) would contrast nicely with the background.
Also for the previous one, the rendering on the figure is really tight compared to the looseness on the beasts face. Considering how close those two forms are, it makes the image look a bit unfinished ( and I am saying this only because I do this a lot too and it was pointed out to me). Also the conifer in the foreground could probably use some stronger lighting on it to help it pop out a little more from the background, maybe slightly more saturation also.

Off to dig deeper into your sketchbook. Update!

all good stuff. i'm going to be reworking the beastly illustration over the next few days, so I'm glad you stopped by!

still working on this illustration. i pushed all the characters around until they felt more important than the environment. threw more light on them and tried to put in a LOT more color. you're definitely right about color contrasts, though. i've been obsessing over kekai lately, and picked up some of his monochromatic habits in the process. good for tons of stuff, bad for this. something to keep in mind as i push forward.

levels are a bit off on that photo and it kinda looks like theres a bit of jizz on her face, but that's just a seam in the plaster. scout's honor.

i have been meaning to comment on this sketchbook for awhile now i have the chance, you have some really neat stuff in here, for your piece with the flying bear thing i think you need to work more on some of the fluffy background features like the waterfall it doesnt really fit to well as is. Also the boy who is cheering has a massive mouth, i guess its something to look out for in the future.

Interesting imp concept it makes sense but how would that imp be running around a forest or climbing trees if it has giant branches dangling from the sides of it, they would snag onto everything, if you dont really care about the features then i suppose its a said interesting imp concept. Now the very last piece is that your actual study? what is the media? charcoal/graphite? It looks amazing!

thanks, man. lots of good input. i'm actually not happy with the boy in that painting at all. i may scratch him and start over.

for the imp, i was thinking he would use those branch-wings as camouflage. he'd kind of prop himself up amongst the lower rungs of the tree and then tuck them straight down his back and dive bomb people who tread on his turf. definitely still a work in progress, though, so i'll keep what you mentioned in my "notes to myself" layer

the last piece is a photo of a drawing that is graphite (hb pencil) on bristol. i still see that smirky face in my nightmares on occasion ;p

tweaked the composition on this one. mostly just fixed the horizon line issues (almost) and pulled the figure further into focus by increasing her size considerably, then leading the background contrasts, shapes and values into her.

probably going to chop her onto her own layer and completely redo the bg, hair in the sky and scarf tassle to really push them to where they need to be. gesture is stiff, too. etc, etc. wip mode.

You definitely did give the impression of receding space, but it still looks small. I think this is because the leg is going forward, like the other leg, yet it is much smaller. Even though his body is slightly tilted and the leg is angled a bit so that it would appear a bit different, that leg is still too short and has too little mass compared to the other leg.

Other than that, it looks totally badass. And I love the cast up there . Great stuff you've been dumping lately, your values have really been improving.

I've been meaning to start doing digital studies for years now. I had about 20 minutes to spare this morning, so I gave it a try finally. Pretty interesting, but I clearly didn't have time to get the dimensions right. I'm anxious to do more in-depth attempts.

Cool I've been trying to attempt life drawing using Colors on the DS but well it sucks so bad that I don't even want to show to others.

man, i'm jealous. i really want one of those setups. carrying around 40 lbs of gear-- to do simple studies where the point is to remove yourself from a complicated tool kit in the first place-- is getting to be a bit cumbersome heh.

two more speedies. one is just sunspots on a rug i wanted to grab in the couple of minutes they existed. second is at borders with some time to kill. just trying to keep loose and look for light behavior and color nuance.

color i've always been bad with, and light i seem to further complicate with each new thing i pick up. cast drawing has left me with an applicable understanding of light in so much as its ability to explain form.. but the understanding of its interaction on a more ambient, environmentally encompassing level still eludes me. for now.

sounds lame, but it actually helps to diagram the flow of light sometimes. you know, blue lines with arrows coming in the scene representing primary light sources, red lines with arrows shooting off from surfaces that now account for secondary light scattering. etc.

The life studies seem to be getting better with each one. I really like the last one, the lighting in the interior is well realized and the space feels very solid and real, but you accomplished this without excessive detail or rendering, it works well in its simplicity.
