it's funny how you'll be just looking at an image- an image you've seen a hundred times before- then a bell goes off in your head, and you get it.

still dark, but i'll fix that later. working pretty abstractly on it right now. spent another 20 minutes re-arranging. this is mostly just a background, illustrative elements to come. working in a sort of cartoon fashion on this one.

loving the speedpaints man. keep pushing the speed and simplification! big picture is everything. i'm digging the robot painting, but even though its overcast, i think the value range could be pushed more. that's just me though, maybe the subtlety is what you were going for i also like the 45 min speedy, really effective composition. anyway, keep kicking ass!

right on man! Maya is a pain in the ass, tried that once, said no siree bob. I've got an inkling to try zbrush though. Characters are looking cool, the first ones a fav. The light on her right shoulder hits the jacket a bit funny though.

another quickie character/creature from my person project. he used to be human, and a bum no less. yes, that's a glowing blue brain, mounted on the spinal column which has tore through the chest.

this guy is essentially a walking burglar alarm, alerting other creatures in the area to the presence of tasty treats- AKA, you.

Mischevious: Don't worry, looots of rendering on the way. I only use layer effects for literal effects (smoke, glowing flaky bits in the air). Never on things with physical form and volume. That's a path to failure, I found out early on!

Here is how these things start, for those who might be interested. I do a bunch of silhouettes until I hit the attitude I want (40 on this guy), then linework over that and drop the silhouette layer to trash (or hide it). Then I decide on my light source, and work out a cast shadow layer. Lastly, add a light mood layer, which is a diffused spotlight with tons of fall off on this one.

Next I'll add color below all the layers, then opaque details on top of them all. Lastly, I'll paint in my secondary light sources (there will be three in this one).

Killer thumbnails, anyway. And you're getting some nice results from this silhouette process. (Must try it).
