    thanks guys!

i definitely understand the importance of longer studies. thats how i learned everything i know, pretty much. unfortunately, thanks to that method of study, i'm simply not fast enough for the job i have in front of me. so all of my efforts go towards getting faster. which is convenient, because i have absolutely no time to paint right now. laaaame.

this guy took about an hour. his name is seamus :p

    Looks really good so far.
The only thing Id say, is maybe not by adjusting the armor, but the pose, is making it a little more 'fan service'y. Get some more of those legs showing. Maybe some skinnier arms and legs too. Make sure you get the Girly vibe, which in sailor moon is those very long skinny legs.
Im assuming your gonna have some very lovely girly colours too!

    Keep up the goodwork man.

So along with the atelier training, do you wish you also did faster studies to transition easier into the field? I'm assuming the industry calls for rapid ideation rather than highly finished stuff. I read Uncle Mullins used to do >30 min gouache/digi studies, I'm j/w what kind of excercises you're doing now to build up speed and move away from the atelier pace.

Anyway, keep up the great work. Sailor Moon is shaping up nicely, I agree with your choice between the four thumbnails The half tones chars are also looking quite good!

ed: yeah, i definitely feel that supplementing the atelier education with my own study was key for my personal progression. the school is very fast paced and they strive to take what should be at least 4 years of education and force it into a 2 year program. as such, it can become very easy to fall into a false sense of security. that is, thinking that because you know something you have an understanding of it (i call it the google fallacy). i recognized that early on and made sure that i took a lot of extra time (time i stole from sleeping) to constantly experiment. you have to make lessons learned a part of your natural expression, rather than simply knowing the rules.

as for what i've done to get faster, a lot of that came from a facebook game development project that got dropped on us at the school. we changed from a laborious character/asset development process with the guys from MB, to an extremely trimmed down, highly stylized cartoon process with TONS of assets. it made me realize that in concept art you really have no control over the pace by which you are required to work. the oil and graphite studies at the atelier prove that given enough time, i can create an immaculately rendered concept. in the real world, that doesn't mean dick. so from the facebook game onward, i've been striving to cheat my way through concepts. i can render the shit out of something, figure out exactly how every fold and wrinkle reacts to the lighting conditions at hand-- if need be. now all my efforts go towards making something look finished at lo-res as fast as possible. i use tons of custom brushes. i often set them to stroke according to my pen direction so i can quickly flick my wrist in various directions and create patterns in perspective. i use photos constantly for texture and as a basis for highly detailed areas. i'll often draw a box and use the distort tool to put a building front on it, then simply highlight and shadow to get a sense of depth. i often create entire scenes in sketchup then zoom around to find my composition, then take screenshots and draw my thumbs straight over them. when i do characters, i spend 20 minutes getting the gesture right in simple line. then clean the lines for 20 minutes. then decide on a light source and drop in cast shadows for 5 minutes. then use my background as my mid value and put in shadows and highlights only, blending between the two and the midtone in areas of focal interest- often ignoring polish below the waste entirely because everyone else does too. etc, etc. i work zoomed way, way out with a huge brush and i only zoom in for the face (at the end) and to clean up when absolutely necessary. everything works out when you shrink and sharpen. etc, etc.

sorry to ramble. hopefully some of that clears up a few things

thomas: you mean the casts from the atelier? i can point you towards a good web site. i have a david's eye cast if you want to buy it for very cheap

karantina: thanks! if you have a question about something in particular, i'd gladly answer it.

    --

i wish i could show stuff i'm working on, but it will all be tucked away for about 2 years. aaaarrrrg.

quick value pass. hopefully i'll get a bit more time to work on this soon. and hopefully more than like 15 minutes at a time every 3 days ;p

quick speed painting over an old sketchup model. kind of a play on an urban lord of the rings- a young hipster gandolf ("gands") fights a subway demon. "dude- you're totally not passing."

i was bored and had an hour or hour and a half to kill ;p

here's the 5m doodle to work out a pose. i don't finalize them or anything near it, but i generally do these to avoid senseless noodling in the original image. kinda fun. very loose.

    goddd daaaaaaammmnn

    its been a while.

i've been putting in a fair amount of overtime at work, so my personal painting has really slacked off. which is really just me being a sissy, since I painted 24 hours a day when i was in school.

so i'll be posting some new stuff. this is an establishing shot for a new project i'm starting up, which takes place in India in the late 70s/early 80s.

    more on the way.

Holy Cannoli! Good to see you back man! I dig what you're doing with that last shot. The desert brightness really looks convincing. Are there going to be any old vehicles incorporated into this?

i was thinking about throwing some in there, along with rickshaws and the like. i'm definitely going to do something with the area between the pool and the building, since the spacial depth is so utterly unconvincing right now heh

last piece looks great man. Only thing throwing me off slightly is that the perspective of the steps on the left and the closest edge of the pool are at a strange angle to each other. I'm guessing that was intentional.

Apart from that I love the it so more please!

legit updates. and i like that rant you made to Ed. it's a shame you have no time to create personal art or work more on that world with the giants. but i'm sure, as you level up, you will attain better jobs which will allow you more free time to post delicious updates like the last one.

keep it up! i love popping my head in here and seeing sweet stuff.

Really like what youve done with the latest one. I like the nitty gritty feel it has with lots of realistic textures.
You thought about putting people in it? With my work lately I found that putting some people into any urban scene instantly just made it 'better'. Gives it that sense of place a bit more.
    Keep up the hard work.

thomas: nope, just a good ol' fuck up. ill fix it

matt: yeah, that one is on hiatus. its my favorite project, but i feel like the real challenge is in doing something realistic in an actual location. at least for me right now. i'll probably go back to the nephilim when i get bored of harder stuff

andy: will do... when i stop being lazy ;]

i'll have more stuff to post later on tonight. thanks, guys!

Good to have you back! That Sailor Moon design looks really good, did you finish painting it?
If you need any ref help for the India thingy , feel free to ask! I think the best refs would be stills from the movies of that time period. Also, film posters etc in the scene would really add to the authenticity ( we love our movies!) and help establish the time frame.
    More people and vehicles definitely.

If you have any links, definitely pass them along!

My girlfriend is actually in Bombay right now visiting family. She just got a Sony Nex-3. It does that sweep panorama thing and I've been begging her to take panoramas everywhere she goes. The project I'm working on is actually loosely based on her Grandfather, whom she never had a chance to meet. More on that soon.

    Thanks!
