Nicely render. Maybe extend a bit the shadow on the ground as the weapon is big and should block a lot of light.

    Anyway show more stuff!

Nice work with the atmospheric perspective, I really like how you handle your tones. You are also doing a very good job working with somewhat complex composition (2/3 characters), I'm still too lazy or too slow to do that. Let's see more.

I agree the red and grey color scheme looks great. Reminds me when I read through James Gurney's Imaginative Realism book that mentioned about the natural color of predator animal/dinosaur where predatory and prey creatures have their own unique color schemes or pattern to blend with the surroundings.

The loose study seems rather heavy on the right side. Maybe some smaller items on the left side of the wall to break up the big shape. I don't know much about Gerome work since you mention is a loose tribute work but that's my 2 cents.

danka: thats very interesting. why do you prefer it, if you dont mind me asking? thanks!

john: i'm just glad i didn't get this from you:

epic: it depends. right now, i'm not working on any real projects or what not, so I'm just trying to digest the things i've learned thus far- trying to take them on rather than simply put them to use, you know?

    more later today..

Started working out the texture and skin tones on the beast. Threw in buddy over there for a rough size comparison.

I'm still working on the head/neck geometry. I got caught up in stupid stuff and ended up disconnecting his triceri-crest thing when its supposed to be part of his neck, not his head. Have to rethink the drawing aspect of that bit, especially. Fun guy to work on

Whoa, that guy is bigger than I thought! I think you picked the best color scheme for him and agree that there is still some decisions to make about just how that head crest relates to the head and neck. Lookin' good!

    Thanks for the comment on my sketchbook, i always appreciate good feedback. You have a great sketchbook going on here. I like that last creature design, his skin looks thick and tough, and anatomy is spot on;

As far as critiques go, i feel like his triceratops crown should look more as if it's part of his skull. As it is now, it gives a look as if it's a separate part of his bone structure than his head, which may be intentional, but thats the only thing that stands out at the moment. Regardless, it's a great piece. Keep it up! and thanks for stoppin by my SB.

zealot: the crest is indeed supposed to be coming off of his upper shoulder area. off the head was a bit too triceratops, which i haven't entirely fixed yet. thanks !

near final on the sheriff beast with a ton of stuff fixed, and a quick environment study.

Oooh really cool update. Nice muted palette and value control. I like the shadow you had underneath the sheriff before--he looks more grounded. Also, some highlights on the triceratop's legs/ribcage area could round it out. Seems kinda flat right now.

EDIT: Oh nice environment too. Is that place real??? I want to go therrre. Small detail but I think the edges of the purple shadows are too crisp towards the left--almost like a purple piece of paper in front of the mountains. Lovely brushwork.

yep, its a real place. heres the photo i did the study off of. i think i exaggerated the crispness of it all, but that may have happened during the shrink+sharpen too. it was mostly an exercise in how to repaint without using the color sample tool, but i should definitely pay close attention to that kind of thing too.

    thanks!

Interesting ideas and exciting endeavors you are posting. The complete character design of the sheriff is really nice as well as the creature. I like the red to grey variation best, as well. Post some sketchbook pages if you could! I'd love to see your on-the-side studies. ;]
