So, I have to ask... how do you get that gorgeous line-work. Or better yet, who's work did you study to get it like that? On post #303, take the guy in the center for example, how did you know to do the shadows like that? Is this some kind of academic approach to drawing like this? I see many artists like this.

Thanks in advance, just trying to get better at my pencil renders.

    Subscribed.

Your work is excellent. I love your saturated colors and your forms are very good.

The Count of Monte Cristo is looking great, though I don't think he's attractive enough. Maybe that's not that important, just a thought. It's painted very well so far.

Mat Kaminski thank you. well sorry i cant really answer that. im doing this for a long time yet, with pretty much the opposite of a streamlined approach. i had some drawing training back in the graphic design school (guess americans would call it a college or something) ive been to. i definetely learned to see there.
loving and constantly looking at pictures done by velasquez, zorn, sargent, n.c. wyeth, schiele, mucha, frazetta, schmid, kev ferrara and on and on. i cant really tell you how i pick this up... just constant practise, staying in observation mode as long as possible whenever possible, and reading about art... jack hamm, harold speed, bridgeman, to name a few, to aquire concepts i can build upon.
sorry for the longwinded reply ^^.

    Malepart thank you.

Shadow Stalker thanks man. i made him "less (not in my opinion, yet i see how this deviates from mass-media-direction) attractive" on purpose. hes a tough guy, been in jail for decades, been running with pirates... i wouldnt want him to be mr prettyface . i also think theres more to someone beeing attractive than beeing pretty, well clothed, whatever. its a matter of charisma imo, and in that point im pretty happy with him . yet id like to hear if and where you disagree, because id benefit from any input.

seems im very talkative today.... well...sorry... some pictures...

didnt feel this weeks chow theme, yet felt inspired to draw a lame cowboy sketch, trying to apply what i learned from hamm, speed and dow... im not too happy yet lol.

You should never, ever feel bad about long-winded replies!

They are often more informative and helpful as a whole all along the way

Thanks for giving me some insight into how you do your work, it will help me in the long run for sure. Especially since you gave me a ton of examples to draw from.

ChoW 261, the rendering looks great, especially on the pattern on the neck-piece. I'm sure you didn't have fully enough time to finish it out since you had Z-Brush work and things, but the bottom half has this 'unfinished' feel. Was this on purpose? Or did you run out of time perhaps? Also, next time perhaps search for a better composition (not entirely placing the center of attention in the center of the piece). Either way, it looks nice, just has a slight sketchy feel to it.

The alchemy study is crazy and creepy at the same time! I hate eyeless people
Could make a big version of this for halloween coming up LOL!

I especially dig the sketchiness of the poses and things on the next image, they are great exercises esepcially when just playing around. Keep up the good work!!

And finally, the Z-Brush studies look like they are very organic and believable.

All-in-all, I think you are doing great, just keep pushing it forward

absolutely amazing sb, im hooked. i completely agree with you analysis of the count, this guy is an ex-con who nearly drowned escaping his hellish confinement in the Chateau D'if, driven by rage and vengeance. maybe a little mad after 14 years of plotting, but he's also a powerful intellect, and compassionate to Cadrues and Morel among others. this guy needs to radiate charisma, not be the pretty boy he was when he was sentenced. he needs some fucking big rocks on his fingers, maybe a little more kindness round the eyes and done.

Nice silhouettes! And those Z-brushes are very good, but I take it you're not too proud of them.

You like 2D drawing more than 3D modeling, right?

wow.... im surprised, and feel honored... nice

Mat Kaminski well for the chow i felt like this is just as far as i absolutely have to go to make it work, creating rythm of refined and unrefined areas with the sharp typo opposed to more blurry legs... yet it could aswell be an excuse for beeing lazy. it obviously doesnt work as well as i hoped, since you mentioned it. looking back at all characters i did, the feet are always kind of just blocked in. if its a major drawback let me know please, because then ill have to fix that. thank you mate.

Velocity Kendall thanks man. ive been slapping myself when i read about the ring.... i felt so stupid not even thinking about that. ill def. add it for the portfolio.

p sage i actually like zbrushing alot.... im even able to spend much (well not much but some) more time on a sculpt than on any picture ive done in the last 13 years :/. i dont take it as seriously, and thats the key there i think. no disappointments ^^. im proud of them, but from all ive seen done in zbrush its mostly highly detailed stuff, and therefore i thought mine would lose appeal if shown larger, because im only worried about the form and then lose interest quickly.
i like doing those - last week i liked it more than drawing/painting - yet drawing and painting is the profession thats much more important to me and i spent much more time with.
i read on zbrush central that the lead concept artist of witcher 2 been doing a lot of the faces in zbrush aswell, and this really gave me a boner to be honest, because i love faces.... this would be the fucking best job discription for me ever . yet he didnt have to care for the topo and stuff, he just handed it to the 3d guys and those retopo'd them. i dont want to be a character artist having to do all the technical stuff... its just too much to learn something im not really interested in and therefore am too slow. but if theres a possibility to just sculpt and not care about those... lohovely.
also it refreshes me kind of.... i quite often feel like not progressing at all and then zbrushing really helps me out of there... it makes me think differently and im going back to drawing with new ideas/concepts and energy.

Mike L thanks man. im glad my struggle is read as confidence

sony thank you, im glad you like it.

Fisch i feel quite honored by those words, because im a long time fan of your art. thank you alot.

MattGamer thank you mate. yours aint bad either .

lewiston danke mann. den rest besprechen wir beim bier.

Carnifex thank you mate. i really like your progress. looking forward to a sketchmeeting soon.

    gousman thank you!

e-nat thank you... yeah that one stunned me to be honest.
