The last ones would be great editirial illustrations. Very nice. Reminds me to try some new techniques. ^^

How do you make your works ? Pencil illustration scanned and colored digitally ? The pencil still shows through right ?

Vaejoun-I love editorial illustration. Did some earlier in my career but got pulled away by strange things in my head. I still love the concept and imagery involved. These are actually pen drawings done very small and then enlarged and colored digitally. The texture of the line is accentuated.

    Vanja-Thanks for your continued support.

    Arnus-Thanks!

    More Madness

Just a few more things. Some are a little departure. The pug, protected by a previous probing experience, just had to be drawn.

Just looked through this whole thread again. Love your work and unique style.

There is one thing that I would love to see more of though..... 3/4 views of heads etc. You mostly do portrait shots, very well, but slightly repetitive.

Not really a crit, but just something that I feel is missing.

Thanks for the observation sevans. Let me see if I can explain myself to you. When my career shifted to more gallery work than illustration I explored what I call a staged look. Most everything I paint seems to painted in a shallower space with figures directly involving the viewer or ignoring them completely. There are a few exceptions where I play with a different view but then I feel I'm illustrating a narrative rather than implying a more mysterious negative. I have a hard time distilling what I'm painting in so few words but suffice it to say that this straight on, designed space is done purposely. It is also a great challenge to do something and set up a problem. For example making nearly symmetrical space alive, or turning the edges on a face and skin with very little value. Sometimes I feel like activating a piece is cheating.

I hope this helps a little. I do vary things more with illustration. In fact a few of the pieces above, the line and color things which are done as illustrations, show a little more variety. The thing is when people start to hire you for what you do they want the look that you are know for. So I will forever be know as the flat round guy.

I'm really fascinated by your style. My drawing teacher last semester was very fond of the term 'less is more'. Seeing your work I understand what point he was trying to get across. You have such a beautiful and unique expression in your images.

Thanks Hellcow. I think Mies van der Rohe said that. I'll add; less is more until it's not anymore. Sometimes unique is lonely but it is always fun.

Wow, just found your posts, and I'm already a fan of your work. Great sense of design and composition, and I love the sense of contrast in scale within your characters, the little elements and details dropped in to the chracters create some great little roadmaps for the eye to follow within the whole. Hope that makes sense!
