Copy canvas layer? Paint under canvas?

I'm pretty embarrased of my "layer" knowledge. I want to Scan a drawring, open it in painter 9 and be able to paint underneath it. Is there a way to select the lines of my drawing only and erase the background so I can see my lines? I'd actually like to be able to change my sketch line's color as well.

I'm experimenting with the magic wand tool and the options under "select" but so far I've only managed to lock up my computer

Sorry, lots of questions here, but any help would be much appreciated.

You can change the Layer setting (in layer palette) to Multiply and that will make the white transparent (tho wont help with changing colour).

I sometimes use a free plugin by Flaming Pear called Ghost (link to the download page HERE... it's in with the Free Plugin files). Stick the download into your Plugin folder in the Painter Application folder (you need to restart Painter for it to see it). Basically you have your drawing on a layer (needs to be a layer and not on the Canvas) select Ghost from the Effects/Flaming Pear menu and it will get rid of all the white.

    Nate,

To lift your scanned line work to a Layer, open it in Painter, then do the following:

    1. Use Select menu > All, or Ctrl+A (Windows) or Command+A (Mac) to select the entire Canvas.

    2. Click the F key to activate the Layer Adjuster tool.

    3. Click inside the selection to lift the Canvas (your line work) to a Layer. This is Layer 1.

    4. With Layer 1 highlighted in the Layers palette, go to the Composite Method drop down list (where you see the word Default) in the upper left corner of the Layers palette, then click the small arrow on the right end to open the list of Composite Method options and choose Gel.

    5. Now the line work Layer's white background is transparent and you can paint on the Canvas or paint on other Layers below the line work Layer.
