Sulk-Sals Sketchbook of Kindy Hogwons Suck Out All Your Energy (8/19/11)

I should have started on of these back when I was still in college, but intimidation kept me from doing so. It's been two years since I graduated from University of the Arts and I hope to do this as a career. I hope to be a concept artist. Fist though, I must improve. I'll greatly appreciate any crits I get here. Thanks for taking a look at my book ^.^

I'll start with some older stuff (not terribly old, just from about second half of 2008 [I think]), just so there's a better idea of my history.

    some sketches:

A demon and manticore design from the sketches above:

The samurai from the above sketch. It was originally for a ChoW but I misunderstood the brief and made her a kitsune. Still finished it up though.

A race I created just for practice called Eelavane

    -----------------------------------

I've done the past few ChoWs, mostly to work myself up to posting a sketchbook, and I have to say I've been learning a good bit. I won't post the two complete and utter failures, but here are "Bowerstone" and "Female Sith Lord":

I hope to keep this updated, as well as to add some backgrounds (which I'm sure you can tell I'm very weak in) and some 3D work.

Some new work from this past week (gonna try posting these a bit smaller too)

I'll start with last weeks ChoW, the Queen Consort:

    Sketch:

Size: 192.2 KB

    Finished:

Next are some personal projects. Naar-La:

    Name: naarifullbody.jpg
Views: 694
Size: 284.5 KB

Naar-La's sword. I wanted to start getting into 3d again, and I figured I'd start with something basic like a sword. Texture to come later.

After getting a crit from daestwen and Chate Noire about my style working against me, and to try working without lines (varying widths or no lines, hard for me to wrap my head around the former though. Hard for me to be fluid), I came back to a style I used earlier. In UArts I worked in Illustrator till second half of Junior year. However, because I could never figure out how to use texture in my work, I decided to use ink and pencil at the crit of a fellow student. So, I thought I'd give it a try again. A small experiment:

    Name: Naarlahumanoid1.jpg
Views: 624
Size: 72.2 KB

And I'm going to do this, and the Chow this week in this style to see how it works. Any tips, crits, etc would be great ^.^

Too long since I've updated. Although I did have nice project for the past few weeks, but I've worked on these in my spare time. None of these is even remotely finished.

I'm still worried about texture, but I'll worry about that when I come to it. Thanks for taking a look at my work.

Bleh, way too long since I last posted. At least I was somewhat productive. Did find the thing I was missing though. Thanks for looking at my sketchbook.

I like the style you have going, the blockiness and the thick black line art. I envy your imagination too. These are fantastic creatures. Naar-La is awesome! I like her humanoid form better, something feline about the face that is more appealing. You're very creative and I envy that, I just think you would benefit from knowing the underlining volumes and anatomy better. When you're sketching in pencil you are already worrying with the finished style. Maybe you should worry with making a correct and consistently 3D figure and then apply your style to that.

Leonor - Thanks! That's something I got to work on. I can copy well enough from reference, but understanding the form is a different story. I went and found some Loomis books online, need to get sketching from those.

So this time I'll begin with sketches:

Size: 44.9 KB

    Name: sketches2.jpg
Views: 427
Size: 49.8 KB

    ChoW 163: I did Pakhet

    Name: alien.jpg

Size: 117.8 KB

    Name: alienchow2.jpg
Views: 421
Size: 108.8 KB

    Name: Pakhet.jpg
Views: 489
Size: 475.9 KB

I also decided I need to work on actual faces so I took some pics I had of some friends and tried it. The sketches (and the reference) suck but I learned a lot.

    Name: sketches001.jpg
Views: 397
Size: 49.2 KB

Then just for fun I tried a new character I'm developing. She's the same race as Naar-La, just a different ethnic group.

    Name: sketches002.jpg
Views: 409
Size: 57.0 KB

And I am also a WoW dork, so a project I'm working on involving my characters (or at least the two I've had the longest).

The human seems way too small, even set next to a Draenei. I'll have to make her taller so she doesn't seem like a child.

Besides being almost two years since I last posted, it's been quite a long time since I even made a finished illustration. It has been time well spent though.

I chased a love I left behind when I was younger. It took too long to go after her, but two years and 12,000 kilometers later I have married the woman of my dreams. Now though my job is sufficient to care for our needs, I would like a better career (being a kindy hogwon teacher is so draining). Still, enough slacking and time to get to work. I can hopefully update a lot more often.

Then again, anything will be more often than 2 years ㅋㅋㅋ

(Korean practice drawings are from "Korean Art Book" and since I can't read Korean yet the information needs to stop there)

I'm trying to design the image more, and to create more of a finished illustration. I'm also hoping to introduce more elements of Korean art in my work. A simple piece to get me back into the groove, lets hope things get better ^.^

Hey man congratz on making your Sketchbook. You wont regret it, and I think you'll find that its really not intimidating at all As long as you can take criticism of course. If you dont, then you gota learn to love it. My first impression of your stuff is just that you need to study gesture! It will open new doors for you definitely. I recommend the video lectures of Vilppu. Also, how much of this work is recent?

Hi Malakuko, Thanks for the crit. I know i've been too simplistic in my poses and that it's truly something I need to look at. I'll take a look at the lectures as well. As for what's recent, just the last two posts. I figured I had a sketchbook so I might as well just use the one I had

A few more sketches and drawings. A failed illustration in which I learned quite a bit. Also a design of one of my characters that I draw a little too often.

Think I'm just going to devote my time to study and design for the next few months. Next update I'll have some life studies.

Some sketches from photos in magazines and some studies in pen. A slight Mucha study as well. Some of the elements are very interesting. I'm also trying to see how I want to work. I keep switching back and forth between styles and since I consider my line work to be a bit strong (though if it is...that's for others more skilled than I to judge) I would like to use it.

However I have a problem with "muddy colors" and I'm just not sure how to approach it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm approaching shadows differently by placing cool colors with them instead of just a flat layer of black across the whole thing like I used to.

It escapes me however if my colors are bad because of there being too large a plane of color and the eye compensating, or if the colors I'm placing together are poor matches, or if just all the color is a poor match.

    Any crits are greatly appreciated.

A few studies as well as a drawing. I know the Loomis study sucks, I'll be taking much great care (and perhaps larger) for the next ones.

Also tried a drawing of my wife as well as another color experiment.

Thank you very much for your visit and yes you're right, proportion is definitely a weakness of mine because i'm always just eyeballing it instead of really taking the time to compare measurements! will focus on that more!

also, you've got some really nice stuff there too, i especially like the last update, very good studies - the ribcage looks yummy - and i totally dig how you did the portrait! i'm not so fond of the creature/robot stuff as a subject itself but your lines do look really good and clean, so keep at it
    Life is a cookie

come take a look -> sketchbook

moving.pictures - Thanks! The portrait was an interesting experiment, so I'll have to try more with it! And those ribs were insane.

A few more bone studies. So much to brush up on, so little time...

And some new studies, including a drawing which is being prepped for an illustration. I took a look at the composition talks though TAD and want to put it into practice.

trying to do more from life too.

Lovely works, great studies, and i like your clean style it makes your work very readable.

What could help you a bit is imo. trying a bit more of these kind of drawing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUM3SHNCfpM
These guys is calling it drawing like a painter. These kind of drawing could help you just to brake the routine of making your works to linear - be aware of getting to much into routine!
