Hi there... can you recommend any Beginner Videos?

    Hello

I have been reading CA forums for a while now and would really like to start getting into this kind of stuff but at this time I sorta really suck. Now while I do not expect to become awesome like many of the people here I was hoping I could improve with some professional coaching... and maybe have some fun drawing and painting.

So I am looking for some video lectures on drawing. NOT on application use, or just time-lapse of some legend making me sick with envy

Is there any drawing "theory" video lectures that you guys can recommend or better yet produced by massive black? Stuff that covers the basics form the start? Not something like the "villains" witch sounds awesome form the MB site but again it is like "ok so you can draw and pant.. now how to make it even better" I am thinking much more basic... like pen holding tips, how to work out proportions, composition fundamentals, do you draw arcs with the wrist or the shoulder.. stuff like that? Well I do not know what should be in it... but I think you know what I mean... Like early classes for those not wishing to improve but those wishing to start.

Basically I am a 3D animator, one who has been doing it for a while and mainly got into it as I loved cartoons but sucked at drawing.. though I was really good at computers... so I moved into the techy side of animation (things like simulations, rigging and stuff like that) So I was hoping that there would be some real ENTERY level , total beginner video drawing lectures that I could get from you guys that would help me get a grounding in the basics of figure and environment drawing.

    Thanks in Advance

    PS - I was thinking

Mike Bierek's The Mystery of Form
    James Kei's Digital Figure Painting
James Kei's Clothed Figure digital Painting
    Shawn Barber's Foundation Painting
Carl Dobsky's Perspective – Volumes One & Two

Are these the kind of thing i am talking about or are they more about fine tuning already developed skills?

    Hey there,

Just to say I've been hunting through for videos looking to improve my basic understanding as well, and I've got a similar list currently =)

The only one I'm not sure of is the "Foundation Painting" one, since from some things I saw in the trailer, I wondered how transferrable the discussion/skills were. It would be nifty if someone more knowledgeable on the video/subject could answer that.

Will say as well though, that you should definitely check out the streams being offered as well. I splurged and got the bundle and started watching the "Color theory" one last night. Only had time to see 20 minutes so far, but I've had to stop twice just to think and absorb some major information I hadn't read/heard before. It's already worth it even just with that!

If the "Compositioning" and "Art of Beauty" ones are like it, which they seem they might be, they should maybe be on your list too =)

    Good luck!
    Pengy

Most of the MB videos are not geared towards early beginners. However, you can't go wrong with Color Theory, Composition, Mystery of Form and Perspective. I haven't tried those two James Kei vids yet, but I can say that Jason Chan's Quick Sketch and Final Illustration vids were very helpful to me, and not too difficult to understand as long as you know how to do basic painting in photoshop.

yea this is what I have seen form 2 I have gotten so far. They are not really what I am looking for. What I am trying to find a a beginner to sketching or something like that... were it explanes proportions, and techniques on how to draw itself.. not how to use applications or improve your abilities in design...

But a learning course that is about the fundamentals of sketching and drawing and then painting itself. I have gotten a few books but I find it very dry.. and would much prefer to see a video lecture or w/e.

I think you'd be better off with a good book. I know it's not all that exciting, but no one ever improved too much without some laborious and repetitive studies.

Most of what I know about drawing the figure comes from Vilppu, and I´ve improved a lot through his stuff. Excellent step by step learning material. I´ve found his process the most logical and analytical in both drawing from mind and drawing from life. I´ve watched many of those videos once and again. I always catch something new, or at least some ideas become clearer.

I totally get you. I always get stressed out when I see those long time artists draw away. It almost seems to effortless. Maybe it's not a bad idea to make some vids about that...

I wouldn't recommend getting instructional videos before a good book. Perhaps Loomis or Jack Hamm's book on human anatomy/construction of a character. I think you'll learn alot more from following the simple lessons posed in those. Then, once you know the basic stuff you can splurge for a few videos and i'd bet you'd learn alot better then .

Only my advice though. I learn through a combo myself, books, videos and tutorials.
