Great work in here! You improve with each post! I love your take on creatures - particularly with C.O.W. Definitely coming back to see more!![]()
How delightfully terrifying. Great job!
I love these peeps.
Thanks guys!I'm really rotten at updating this thread -_-; but here is a fairly big update of stuff.
^Usually what I draw doesn't have anything to do with my emotional state but I'm pretty sure I drew this one when I was having a bad day. ):
^This sketch was one of many that were based on a dream, in this one the fallen angel was able to dissolve into a swarm of flies, so here I was playing with the idea. I thought it might be cool to add wings where the "feathers" are actually hundreds of little fly wings.
^My new serpent design, I decided to go with a more alien look since my serpents are suppose to be able to travel through different dimensions, I really like the change as the prior design seemed too boring.
And here are some really loose sketches from the miniature sketchbook I keep by my bed. Most of the sketches in here are done in pen, and done either as I get an idea when I'm falling asleep or if I wake up after a dream.
My latest COWs, Creature of the Week, for the current mascot contest. Both of these guys made it to the final voting.
These brutal creatures are the apex predators of their home planet, and unlike most predators the karnicore doesn’t just kill for food, but also for pleasure. Karnicores are perfectly equipped to give anything they find a gruesome death. Their massive maws are filled with rows of dagger-like teeth, which are constantly regrowing. The karnicore’s jaws can snap bone, its rancid saliva is full of deadly bacteria and once it sinks its razor claws into its victims it will never let go. The karnicore is truly the ultimate predator of its land; the karnicore fears nothing, but everything fears the karnicore.
Furcapoda aitherios is named for its forked legs and ethereal beauty. These spectacular creatures never leave the sky because their veins are full of a lighter than air liquid which keeps them eternally airborne. It is said that being int he presence of an aitherios induces feelings of euphoria and that these creatures have no predators simply because not even the most savage beasts are immune to the sight of their elegance. The aitherios are peaceful nectar feeders and will adopt a field or forest of flowers as their territory, and with their hypnotic beauty guard the delicate blossoms from anyone who would harm them.

The air creature is particularly cool. reminds me of space firebird.
i imagine predatory gas giant dwellers might evolve convergently to our air vehicles; sleek missiles with fins, a gas nozzle at one end and a weapon at the other..

@Velocity Kendall thanks dude, that sounds a lot like Wayne Barlowe's Skewer's very cool creatures.
A few more things...
I've finally finished this picture, this was pretty near being finished when I took a break from it. Recently I was cleaning up my art folder and I noticed that it was still unfinished, so I put the final touches on it and am posting it to share with all of you.
The idea for this picture came from an odd dream where all the birds had white heads, but when they were angry their head feathers would turn a bright red, no it doesn't make much sense, but it's turned into a rather nice picture.
This was a piece I did while trying to practice drawing environments.
Playing around with the creepy red angel again, not sure if I'll finish this by now, I'll probably just start a new drawing of her.
And here's something quick I did the other day, at the moment my computer is right beside a window so I decided for practice to draw at least some of what I saw outside. I tried to not get into much line drawing instead seeing how well I could capture the colors and get some likeness of things without being terribly detailed. While it's pretty rough I actually sort of like it, mostly because the process turned out to be rather relaxing. I plan to try to draw the same view again to keep improving.

Man those pencils are nice! Now I have to go back and forth between blog and sketchbook to get all the goods! Ah well. I'm happy to see that your Sky Guardian seems to be doing well in terms of becoming our new mascot. I really like the new serpent design, I wish I knew the story behind them (they're interdimensional?). And that angel piece is gorgeous, the thousands of fly wings is super creepy but would be super beautiful. It reminds me of a series of art pieces I saw that look like odd bumpy sculptures until you get close and see that they are masses of dead wasps glued into place.

awesome work in here dewd!
NickyBeats: Thank you very much. Yeah a lot of times I'll be too tired to sketch something, but then I'll usually try my best to remember to do it in the morning. I definitely suggest keeping a little sketchbook nearby just in case though.
Si_Swe: Thanks, this mascot contest is gonna be really close, I keep checking the voting and we'll either be tied or 1 or two points ahead of each other. Yep the serpents are interdimensional, I'm still slowly figuring out their story and biology, the idea actually started as a bit of an inside joke with a former friend several years ago, but I thought it was a cool idea so I started trying to turn it into something more. Wow, the wasp sculpture's sound very cool, any chance you'd have a link to some pictures?
rumpenstiltzkin: Thank you!
brenthollowell: Thanks!
Okay so I wanted to show you guys what I've been up to for the last couple of days but it turns out the sketchbook I drew this in is a bit too big for my scanner so a photograph will have to do for now... -_-; I guess I'll have to try and scan it in two pieces and combine them in photoshop.I wanted to do something similar to my God of Madness; do most of the design in pencil for the nice texture of it and then do the color and final touches with photoshop. I wanted the tangled background to be more decorative than realistic but now I'm thinking I'll expand the web above the rounded top to make it fit in the frame better since it doesn't come across as well as I thought it would.

I really should be asleep but... romantic rodent nostril jump-rope! This is a WIP for the latest COW contest, The Mating Ritual, I wanted to do something that would look pretty silly to a human and also a mammal since I haven't drawn something furry in a while. Perspective seems a bit wonky, especially on the female's face if anyone has suggestions for correcting that, that would be great.

I can see so many good ideas in your SB.
So powerful work!
Beautiful sketchbook, your creatures are amazing.

True progress means matching the world to the vision in our heads.
But we always change the vision instead.
Absolutely love your creature designs. You can really see that you have thought about their anatomies from the skeleton up and drawn from real world observations on top of a strong imagination.
Great linework and rendering all around. Keep up the fanatstic work!!
Really cool ideas and imagination. Hats off for that.
You've got a great understanding of form, proportion, and even good understanding of color.
From this one, it's apparent you could learn values better.
Covering up the head and neck of that creature, you see that the body and tail read as flat. Maybe you ran out of time.
The recent pic of the fence and trees you did shows the same situation with values... dark trees directly behind a white fence. It looks like a dark figure on a light background, which throws the trees in front of the fence.
You've got all the tools to level up in a serious way. Better value would give your stuff a quantum leap.

wooo dude, your creature design and drawings are excellent. but your digital sketches are so sexy, i love that fresh, lose and still crisp painterly style. I'm gelouse but inspired
Update on the dancing rodents, for this one I decided to do a black and white sketch first and laying color on top of it, no particular reason I just felt like it. I just started to add some color on top so I still need to refine it quite a bit but I thought I'd share my progress since I haven't updated for a couple of days.
P.S. Happy Valentines day guys.![]()
Post 102!!!!! This is an absolutly f-+#in great creature.. i love it!
Some awesome creature designs !!
Your creatures are awesome! Thanks for the small tutorial and wip shots on the first page too!
Progress on these two, not a lot to say, I got rid of all the black and white and now just have to do the final details; fix his nose, detail the female's hind legs, fix various parts of the background. Fairly happy with how this is turning out although something about the male's coloration seems off I think it might be the yellow, maybe it's too bright.

Fantastic creatures again!![]()
Here's my final, I would have liked to do a little bit more but I ran out of time, thanks HerrleerzeichenS for reminding me to add some more green lighting to the creatures, some more green and brown light on the male helped him sink into the picture better. I'm happy with these little guys although not quite as much with the background but all in all I'm satisfied with this piece.
