Thanks Nettle, I'll post my figures this afternoon when I get some more time to photograph them. Until then here is some more sketches. First is one I did while on the bus and added some ink at home. The second is a study from an artist here on CA who has some amazing work in the concept art section. He created his work with digital software but I thought the designs really applied to ink so I tried to recreate a portion of his art with ink. The last is my own work using what I learned from the previous study.

beautiful pastel work Josh, really coming along. There's already a clear improvement and for such short studies they are amazing, works of art in their own right. Do you get assigned these each week? or are you doing them just for fun now?
Those ink studies are great as well man, who's is the original you studied from for that 2nd one?
Your making some really impressive work man, really looking forward to more!

    Peace
    Dan

Thank you Dan! We get these pastel assignments twice a week for figure class. Yea my ink is coming along. I need to work hard if I'm going to catch Francis Vallejo. He is my one of my inspirations to bust my butt to reach the top. Here is a link to the artists thread that I did the ink study from.

Please everyone if you would after viewing my work rate my sb with stars. I think a star rating will help me to get more views and feedback so I can improve even quicker.

Some really nice inks here man, good to see people using different media.

I think the characters from imagination are a bit kinda cramped and static in their stance? Loosen them up a bit, maybe try some gesture drawing.

Take a look at some of Dan Milligan's stuff to see how to make them much more dynamic.

Cheers for commenting on my sketchbook, and keep up the great work.

Great ink work here! Very gritty and yet a clear idea of what is going on. The eyes and noses are a little awkward but this could be a part of your style. Keep it up!

Droid: Thanks for the visit! I agree that my work from imagination could be a lot more dynamic. More anatomy and gesture study for sure. I took that Chris Halta class on dynamic posing a while ago. I need to implement that more into my work. Thanks for the Dan Milligan plug. He has some amazing work and I could learn from him for sure.

SirCrazlot: Thanks for visiting my sb. I think the more I become comfortable with inking the more fluid my eyes and noses will look. I do have a stylistic approach though to drawing them.

Here is a portrait for class. Charcoal and white chalk on paper, about 4.5 hours.

Thanks RBeek, I will keep pushing forward.

Here is some class work and an update on a portrait. We have been doing articulation drawings in class and I'm finding it pretty challenging. The first one I am looking at the lines and shapes and trying to match them exactly. The second one I have my original drawing in one room and the copy in another. I'll look then walk to the other room and lay down a line. Then walk back look and go back to lay down the next line. Rinse and repeat until done. If you have never done this I recomend it. It will force you to really analyze what you are looking at and expose your weaknesses. The lighter lines are the original with the darker copy on top so you can see the discrepancies. All done with tracing paper.

Those sound like really good exercises man, and that charcoal portrait is coming along great! I would suggest redefining the shapes shapes a bit more though, they seem to be getting lost a bit.

Keep up the good work my friend,
    Peace

Thanks Dan, yea I can see where some definition could help. It's a tricky balance between found and lost shapes that I'm trying to achieve.

Some Ink updates. I played with the background on the first one to give it more of a vignette feel and to make the shape less busy. The second one is an in progress master copy of Bernie Wrightson.

    Some Ink updates

The first three are for class. We are learning about vignetting (how to have a complete composition bleed into the white or black of the page) Here are some attempts. The last piece is the final of my Bernie Wrightson master copy. Was a blast!

    Hey!

Really nice ink works! I like your öhhh, last last digital piece.
    Nice use of colors.
The last one looks a bit to over custom brushed with the background...

Thanks Silwynar. I agree, after looking at the piece with some fresh eyes the background is too busy and takes away from the character. I tried to keep that in mind with this vignette
