Hi, everyone.new member here

Think this sketchbook section is a great idea. Although I have been used to working in a sketch book for years, I've only started painting digitally in the last month.

I'll document my digital doodles and sketches on here over time, and hopefully i'll pick up lot's of advice and feedback on the way to improve. I think the main areas I wish to improve are in figure work, realistic light sources and tone.
Put two images up today, the first one is some marine type effort,was trying to illustrate a grimy and dusty image.
The second image is a design for a scene possibly from Stalingrad during WW2, showing the devastation in the factory sector of the city, but at the same time at a calm period in between the fighting.
Any initial thoughts most welcome.

nice mood, i like the way you paint by mass.

i think you can work more on this environement, even if you the background is foggy, you can suggest silhouets.

Really nice work. I can feel the mood that were talking about in the WWII pic. Would be great if you can finish that image, add more content and details.

ZOU -thanks for the hints, yes i'm also going to be working on drawing distance and matching it up in an image, as the rail yard image does just end abruptly. Will be adding more stuff for sure!

This is a third attempt at producing an image on a tablet, although originally a jungle scene, it altered into a forest instead.

Nice lighting. Again I can feel the mood. And again, I would suggest you add more detail, at least on the distant trees, otherwise it feels a little empty and unfinished. It will make all the difference.

Latest effort added, I wanted to illustrate some sort of industrial forge or furnace, really hot, smoke filled dirty sort of place. Just concentrated on tone and lighting so far, not a great amount of detail.

For your digital paintings, I would suggest not using a white canvas when you start. pick something a little darker. it helps

Cheers Jeff, i'll be that in mind when I attempt the next couple of images. Is it easier to work out colour values then when you work with a dark canvas to start with?

I know some people also start their digital paintings in black & White tones and only begin to add other shades of colour later on, I think I may try and incorporate that into my work flow as well.

I second the notion of posting some figures. Also I would like to see sketchbook pages.

I think you should really try to structure some more form into your digital paintings. What I mean by that is, basically, most have your images have few defined edges and lack a really engaging composition. What I think is awesome is that you're working on that, especially with the furnace image. Just keep trying to 'feel out' the physical form of your landscapes, it will help them look less flat.

Hi Drin, thanks for your thoughts, I agree, It's one of those things of getting out of the comfort zone and changing my composition layouts when I work on landscapes. Thanks for the encouragement, it really helps!

Hey there!

You've got some good stuff going on here. However I think you should do more B&W studies to practice efficient use of value. At the moment your paintings look a bit bland and washed out. Paint from photos in b&w and do a lot of studies while keeping an eye on the edge quality.

Also it's generally a bad idea to use pure white for highlights and in all of your paintings the sky is almost white which does some bad things to the mood of your images Keep on going! You are on the right track and I'm sure you'll improve heaps and bounds in no time!

Juhani, many thanks for your thoughts, I'm going to take on board this idea of working in black & white for a while, I noticed in your sb you produced a series of black & white studies and I can see them progression from them, cheers for the advice mate.

Thanks engelhardt - yep i've found some thinner nibs for my light pen, going to put them to the test to see if I can get sharper forms.

The lines and watercolour? on that refinery is awesome. The whole feeling of it.

You've applied the same thickness of lines to shattered depo that aren't
in the same depth/place. I've never lined much but I would assume you'd
vary the line thickness the same you would value.

The monolith the same, maybe play around with just suggestive lines
instead of making the lines too heavy.

I could never do anything like this though. The last updates (watercolour/coloured ink?) are noice.
Everytime I see watercolour/inks I salvate like a Marvel character.

I can't wait for you to get your Wacom also.

I like those industrial and polluted environments. Good shapes. Try to do some more color study using reference photo.
