I think you might have to narrow down the starting forcus of this sort of discussion and let it grow and dift of its own accord.

I mean, I can recommend laughing whenever you can (especially when you're told not to), working out at least three times a week, a healthy sex life, and fewer carbs, but I think that's way beyond the scope of what you're hoping to start in this thread.

Whoops. I'm talking about teachers you've had that you advise other people of the same school to take.

I guess my original post was vague. Sorry about that.

Cool idea for a thread, I'd like to see what comes out of it. I'm not in an art school yet so I can't really help out, but I'm gonna keep an eye on this.

    Wink

I highly recommend Marshall Vandruff who teaches in the Southern California area. Check out his site http://marshallart.com He teaches at several schools and does workshops/seminars a few times a year (Composition Crash Course is the best imo). I'm currently taking a couple of his classes at FullertonJC (again). Marshall is very, very knowledegable in the subjects he teaches and can deliver in such an amazing way. He's clear and direct. Entertaining and humorous. You can learn a semester's worth of information in a 3-5 day seminar and still be able to take it all in by the way he presents them. (Plus, he charges less than many other teachers out there.) You can even find J. Manley's mini review on one of his seminars on the site.

Troy Gustafson, Jon Webber @ Scad, if you're going into animation. They're both ex-Disney, and all around awesome guys. You'll learn a lot in those classes.

Also, on a liberal arts note, Professor Butz is THE teacher to take for any arts history class at SCAD. Her class is exciting, her tests aren't that bad, and she's always willing to listen to student input and tweak the lesson plan if enough people have an issue. I LOVED her ancient Egyptian history class. It was one of my favorite classes at SCAD.

    Bah! (Again!)

    From [link]

I highly recommend John Larison's classes - all of them. He'll whip your butt into artistic shape and cleanse you of all tangents. Tom Lyle is also great because he gives you good feedback and his assignments are helpful, but he grades in a slightly biased way depending on your personal style, even though he denies this.

Uhh... I've only been at the academy in SF for one semester, but I've liked all my teachers so far. Mark Tennant for figure drawing, Chris Schenck for head drawing, and Stephen Player for illustration.

Any Academy teacher recommendations from others here? I hear good things about Zhao Ming Wu.

If you ever have the chance to take a workshop from Steve Huston, do it!

He is an amazing figure drawing teacher and painter.

I wish I remembered the names of all my teachers from AAU's pre-college last summer. I'd have to recommend Ed Gutierrez for traditional animation. An amazing teacher there with over 20 years of experience with Disney.

Vilas Tonape - Polk Community College
    Drawing 1
    Painting 1 & 2
    Portrait Painting
    Portrait Drawing
(Will be starting Landscape in under two weeks)

Vilas is a skilled, motivated, and energetic teacher. He teaches some manner of Renaissance principles by practice and not by writing essays, reading textbooks, or memorizing key terms. He will go over a concept in painstaking detail if you show that you are willing to listen carefully, think critically, and work hard to learn. The lazy, unmotivated, or thin-skinned need not apply. Even though he teaches in the South, he will let you know what you need to know very much to the point and without the usual pleasantries you might find from folks born down here.

    Bottom line:
No textbooks, no essays, no bullshit
Teaches in charcoal (limited assignments), graphite, soft pastel, watercolor, acrylic (limited classtime), oil
Teaches representational only (still lifes, portraiture, figure)
Will teach as much as you are willing to work for

Polk Community College has two campus locations; one of them in Winter Haven, Florida and the other is in Lakeland, Florida. Polk County is roughly halfway between Tampa and Orlando on I-4 (I think it favors Tampa in terms of travel time just a bit, though I don't travel there often) in Central Florida.

Mr. Tonape (he lets people call him Mr. T and some of my classmates have given him the nickname "Proft," but I digress) is teaching drawing, painting, landscape painting (in acrylic, I think), and portrait painting this summer. Also, every summer he runs a workshop for high school teachers in the Fort Worth area. You can see a summary of it, and the registration brochure (complete with pictures of some of the sessions) at the following page: http://www.artandarthistory.tcu.edu/events.asp.

    His website is www.vilastonape.com

I've been so lucky to have a lot of great teachers at the Academy of Art University

    Mark Zjawinski - Figure Modeling
Very inspiring and passionate about sculpture and teaching. He does far more than a teacher actually has to do and was always ready to help. Great sense of humor. Also, if you were late, you wouldn't get into the classroom unless you brought donuts for the whole class.

Termeh Yeghiazarian - Analysis of Form
Termeh's demos were always straight to the point, simple and easy to follow even though the task seemed daunting. She is strict, but does her best to help and give you constructive criticism

Ben Supple - English Composition 1
Ben is easy to communicate with, pinpoints your weak spots and gives great advice on how to make them better.

Mark (Jason) Bowen - Intermediate Figure Drawing
Very helpful, gives good critiques, and very amicable.

Tom Molanphy - English Composition: Narrative Storytelling
Tom is very passionate about writing and gives very thorough and good critiques.

    Leandro Ng - Perspective
Leandro always made the demos look so easy! (though they really always weren't..) Very helpful critiques and suggestions.

    Jennifer Almodova - Color&Design
Having Jennifer for Color&Design, you feel a bit spoiled. She's always ready to help and sincerely wants her students to succeed.

Caroline Avakoff - Art History of the 15th Century
Caroline is so passionate about art history that it really rubs off on you. I'm not a history fanatic but that class has sparked many interesting discussions and opened my eyes to a whole other world.

I hope this helps someone =)

I've had Termeh before, she is great, although I was unhappy with my grade, but thats my own fault.

At the Academy I would have to Reccomend
David Choong Lee - Figure Drawing and Analysis of form www.davidchoonglee.com
and Henry Yan - I never took a class with him, but I religiously went to his tuesday night workshops.

    Thumbs up

This summer I'm taking Color and Design with Terry Hoff at the Academy of Art.

He's really chill and relaxed and plays good tunes to paint with, (imogen heap, and explosions in the sky etc)

He does great demos, and is really really easy to get along with. BUT will be hardassed where it matters and makes sure your work is up to the academy's standards.

Color and Design is notoriously rough, and Ive heard of some insane teachers. But in my book Terry is about as good as it gets.
