DSG 1450: Creature • BEAST HAS FACE OF BALD, OLD, BEARDED, MAN W/ AWFUL GAPING MOUTH

    .

[ Hopefully it's clear that the body will not be human... or only vaguely so. ]

[ I was actually thinking quadropedal, but if you wanna go slug-like, millipedal, vulturish, elephantine, or whatever, go ahead. ]

[ Main point here is that it's face is one of an old bearded bald man, and that his mouth has some horrible gaping quality. ]

    [ Enjoy! ]

Reference used; inspiration for face was from a copper sculpture of the Akkadian King Naram-Sin (Oxford History of the Biblical World, pg. 39).

Quick thing. It's a little hard for me to connect old people with NASTY HORRIBLE MONSTER, so I went with something a little...nicer?

I really don't know what happened, I had a clear idea of what I wanted in my head, but I guess I couldn't figure it out while drawing it. Oh well, this is cool and sort of fits with the topic.

It's a kind of hunter, sprints very fast through the wilderness towards its prey, slips ahead of them and startles them with the face on its torso... I guess haha

Comments, crits, and advice always welcome!

Sudsy – I like it, it’s rough but still very readable. I had a look at that old king, nice stuff. The first thought I had when I saw your beast with that head was LeChuck from the Monkey Island series :]

Sprech4 – It may be nice but it’s still terrifying! A lovely and humorous creature, you pretty much nailed the brief. Good job!

Copilotdork – Very cool, I like the effect you have going with the humanoid creature turning into a horror piece when one notices the face as the torso.

Denzo – That’s a moustache of doom if there ever was one.
I wish I could multitask like that, whenever I try to doodle whilst on the phone I end up with a broken leg or something similar.
A sweet beast, I like the pool of drool in front of him along with that expression, like he’s raising one eyebrow at the interloper.

Crowsrock – I like it! Props on the traditional media, the top part of the head reads really well, and the arms/legs look great. It has a sort of comical and frightening effect at the same time. That piece of prey better speed up.

Ashton - crabpeople! Good work on the lighting, the left part of the image looks a bit busy though, the old mans face looks adorable :]

Brewin – Image does not show up for me

Very quick sketch, I didn't have the time to color it in though if I get the time I will.

I was thinking along the lines of some old folk legend creature that the locals would talk about when someone saw some odd obscure shadowy thing in the marshes which would terrify them. Then they tell the stories of the creepy old man who used to live in the marsh which the village children would tease and mock until one day a kid accidentally lit his shack on fire. The old man's clothing caught fire so he dove into the marshy waters to extinguish the flames. However he couldn't swim so he subsequently drowned, his body then eaten by the crocodiles. The animals became sick from his flesh, and so spat him back up where he was reborn into a Kaquwada. A creature who hated children and would sometimes sneak into villages and drag a disobedient child back into the marsh to eat.

    Here's mine.. interesting eh?

I'm experimenting with brush technique again, this time really thinking of forms... I think I'm getting more familiar with hard and soft brush rules... I still got a lot to learn, but definitely not bad first attempt! Great topic!

    Some suggestions/ideas -

Sudsy; I recognized that type of hair right away, but I couldn't remember what from. Just noticed the reference you used - nice source, very fitting. Nice aggressive pose too. The mouth area is a little hard to read, mostly between nose and tongue.
Sprech4 ; Very nice monster and an attractive style. Nice job on the anatomy and those little details like the different teeth. I found the girl a little confusing at first, but I think I can see it now. Perhaps it's because her dress looks a little organic as you rendered it the same way as your mancreature.
copilotdork ; Leaving many areas dark really works for your piece, it can be more interesting if not everything is visible. Nice torsomouth. The arm and leg on the left look a little inert, as if they have no bones. I think the one on the right looks a lot better, more savagely with the bones and muscles.
Denzo; Those teeth in the water are awesome. Very odd piece in general - you should draw more when on the phone. Left eye looks a little flat, like a window. No real crits.. I like the brush you used on the hair, how do you get it to follow direction like that?
Crowsrock; Pretty crazy creature, nice expression too. Always good to see an occasional pencil sketch. Perhaps your creature would fall off the walls though, he doesn't seem to have a firm grip on those rocks.
Peg ; Nice closeup. Some odd shapes and anatomy on the beast part, you can only imagine what the rest would look like.. Just the part where nose attaches to forehead looks a little unfinished. As if you forgot about it. Don't you have a sketchbook, by the way? Great job.
ashton; That expression has it all, he looks mean and vicious, and also as if looking forward to tearing someone apart. Priceless. My only crit is on his back - it looks a little messy.
brewin; Nice to see the head directly attached to those legs. He has something 'vampire-like' about him, not sure if that was your intention. You should see if you can put more emphasis on the face and pronounced features. Using some detail or a highlight perhaps.
kawaookami; Nasty. Some nice details in the anatomy that work really well for the "demon-ness". Very malevolent expression. Back legs look a little tough to walk on, almost like stiletto heels (think thats what they are called). Very contrasting with the rest of your creature, though that could have been your intention.
Meli Hitchcock; Great picture, nice job on the perspective and anatomy. Would look nice in colour. Only (his) right arm is a little lengthy on the lower part perhaps. Lots of character in your creature.
erniesthings; Nice to see an almost skull-like head. He really looks old because of his bent over pose. The beard looks a little stiff, like ice. I think you could have used some stronger lines on the fur, it's very subdued.
Dm7 ; Nice experimenting. Can't really see it's a creature, but I like the effects. Lower teeth look extremely sharp. Perhaps you should have added some crisp details on the face, to really empathise the focal point. Some parts are blending in a little with the background.

Don't like it. I did like the topic though ;s Might give it a second try.

Great Topic! Man, I had a LOT of fun doing this, even got a little carried away. About three hours, one at pencils and two at Photoshop.

**The Legendary eyeless wyrm, it has no eyes of its own:

    kawaookami: Scary!!!
dan liimatta: Great technic, man! thats absolutely amazing, my only critic is that the botton(face) is a little confusing.

welcome to all the new members!
fportugal you nailed the face, and the overall feeling is horrific for sure. I like your economy of form.

KevinR good color balance and grounding of the figure. you could play with the claws a tad, make them yellowish to suggest a heavy smoker but I don't know if that would fit with a beast theme...

Sudsy I think you should make your canvas larger as your composition feels cramped.

Anthis I like it but he doesn't seem old enough. I imagined how an old person walks and then narrowed down which beast might match that profile. Is he flying or walking?

Sprech4 It made me laugh which is always a good thing imo. Your work seems very confident. The toes on the foot are off a tad.
