Talking A visual story of one art student's journey + more drivel.. 3 23 13 updates..

Last pages has the latest work.. but I think you knew that!

.. And one figure done from life in charcoal pencil on smooth newsprint. My sketchbook is mostly a travel companion ( planes, places, etc.,) but I find it a solid way to continue developing my eye/hand when I can't draw or paint from life. All here are ballpoint pen - the cheap crap-ish kind ( which i like).. Some are copies of other artists I admire, some are from photos, some are from life.. I am just through two years of fine art and some illustration at the Academy of ARt in SF and now in my last months of a 9 month class with Anthony "Tony" Ryder in Santa FE. I have been studying the figure and drawing and painting people for three years now and that was the beginning of this journey for me.. I am kind of obsessed.. long way to go.. lots to learn.. I see lots of fantastic work here and figured it was time to dip a leg/foot/toe in..

Updated 9/9/11 - I am now teaching drawing classes at the Academy of ARt University in San Francisco. Stop on in if you come visit the school!

    Cheers,

    Kevin

    Super good man!

I love that Fechin painting you made a study from. I would have loved to see how you had tackled the hands from that painting, as those are my favourite part. Very nice though, and extra points for using ballpoint. The life drawing is also very strong, great contour lines

Welcome btw, hope to see more soon

Wow, the level of contrast you have in the shading really good, and subtle application of cross-hatching. Along with other forms of shading techniques, that puts my pencil studies to shame.

By the way any stuff in other materials, like watercolour, oil, paint, ink, etc, in the pipeline for being uploaded? Anyway I'm subscribing.

Wow! Fantastic start, I really like those early classical studies you've got there, though they might look better in a larger scale.

LOVE the Ballpoint pen! Really like the style/approach as well. Really enjoyed seeing this (and I love hearing people talk about carrying their sketchbooks and drawing where ever they can - awesome!) They are like a diary - you can almost always tell a story or know where you were when you drew something.
    Looking forward to seeing more!

Wow! My brother always uses a ball point pen but I've always been not confident enough to use one. I think you've just swayed me though!

Red face when i first started to figure out graphite..

pen ( the earlier posts) came later.. i love both.. i don't blend. hope to never blend! most of these i was psyched about at the time - some still - but mostly: not. usually I like a thing I've done for about.. oh.. an hour!
