    Mind Stew

Well I've been putting off sticking my work on here for long enough and so finally decided to actually do something about after my brother started a thread on here a few months ago. Since leaving art college I've found it really hard to improve and generally just motivate myself so I'm hoping this thread is gonna change all that.

Please feel free to criticizes any of my stuff as I'm sure I've developed some really bad habits that I may not be aware of.

    Cheers!!

    Hi Stew9 and welcome.
Some of these are really great. I especially like the colouring in the first pic, the rendering on the b&w portrait of the girl and te scene you depicted in the last one. I Am afraid the perspective is a little of on that one and the lady could use a little work, but otherwise its great. It would profit from colour a lot. A very nice and creative start. Keep them coming!

    Cheers

Thanks Janos, yeah your definitely right about the perspective on the last scene of the sea monster. I remember really forcing myself to finish that pic which obviously shows.

Your art is like a dog in a box. What you’ve got to do is make the dog bigger
than the box. Not in a bad way, like a mad wolf in a matchbox.

I've been looking at some of the enviroments on here recently and some of them have been amazing. I've not done much so over the next month or so I'm gonna try and churn out as many as I can.

This one just started out as a doodle really and so its not great but its a start!

    Woo hoo!
I finally fixed my scanner out so I thought I'd give a quick update seeing as my sketchbook is starting to look a bit dead. These are just a few sketches I did on the train a few weeks ago.

Some of your works are a bit off but there are many awesome pictures too! I like the old man's face in the latest post. The environment before that looks good too.

Keep it up and don't stop updating!

These are looking wicked brear, i really love that horse head, and the old fella.
You should definetly do more little studies like this, i prefer your quick sketchy stuff.
Are these done in blue biro? or is the scanner just making it look like that.
That environments cool too, it just has quite a boring composition

Arbinn: Yeah, I find it really hard sometimes to tell what looks right and what looks wrong especially when i'm copying a picture. I don't know why but I've always found it easier to just draw from my head. In fact the old man sketch you liked was the only one I drew without ref.
Do you think you could point out what exactly is wrong with some of the pictures? Cheers, it would really help.

Jack: Yeah I don't know why they scanned in like that. I think I need to muck around with the settings a bit.

Anway here are a few of the latest studies I did at life drawing!

Great colors in the first digital one! Nice studies too. I see that the eyes look a lot like symbols instead of what eyes really look like. They are also very small in comparison to the other features. Do some studies of your own eyes. It may also help to draw larger to force yourself to be more detailed. I´m not sure if you are doing this but you should try to sketch out the body (or hand etc) in thin lines and laying out the big forms before laying down your heavier strokes. I think this will help you get away from those scribbly drawings and make your lines more confident.
I´m already seeing progress, keep it up!

Thanks a lot Mumph! Those comments helped loads. I hadn't noticed what you said about my line work before but now its seems really obvious now you pointed it out. I usually use a propelling pencil with a 2b lead so that maybe why tonaly it all looks a bit flat. Also I tend so spend ages reworking a drawing so I think thats why it looks so sketchy.

It'll definatly do some stuidies of eyes too. I aways struggled with drawing eyes so I'm kinda glad you picked up on that.

    More life drawing studies!

I've had to give up life drawing for awhile due to the infamous credit crunch but I'll try and keep up with doing various studies. Need to get better at drawing eyes so that's next on my agenda!

I thought I'd try and focus my art a bit more instead of just doing elaborate doodles so I decided to do a few of my own interpretations of book characters and the like. I thought I'd start with some Robert E Howard cause his stuff's got some really nice descriptions, especially "Conan".

The elephant creature was supposed to be my take on the one in "The Tower of the Elephant" but i'm thinking of expanding that idea later.

    Cheers sandeepbarot

Here's another study I did the other night.
Not sure if anyone will recognise him but its from a photo of Moondog, this street musican from New York who was around in the 50's.

I'm still finding skin tones really hard at the moment so if anyone can give me any pointers that would be really cool.

Hello and thanks for visiting my sketchbook. You seem to have a good handle on applying texture to your works, they have a very nice painterly feel to them. You have some really good designs for your creatures, the archeologist and the first image in your SB are my favorites. Overall though your environments are your best pieces in my opinion, you captured the lighting and atmosphere really well.

Your portraits are looking good, however I notice when you are drawing the full figure there are some issues with the proportions of the head and neck. Usually the head looks a little small and the necks look too thick.

Take care and I look forward to seeing more.

    Massively delayed update!

Thanks Avvatar, I'm really glad you liked my enviroments cause I've been really pushing those the last few weeks.
My brother keeps pointing out that I keep screwing up with the shoulders on a lot of my figures so I really should do a bunch of Bridgman studies or something soon.
