This is very sad news. He was a titan who managed to weather the vagaries of "the era of the art critic" and produce work at the height of human sensitivity. This also marks a severing of a very important living link to N.C. Wyeth (and thus to Howard Pyle).

This death stuff has gotta stop. I can't see any good in it. :/

If any of you reading this don't have a copy of American Visions: Three Generations of Wyeth Art, it is one of the all time great art books, IMHO.

Well, you could argue that without death we wouldn't have Wyeth's work to begin with, since it was steeped in it.

    Andrew Wyeth passes away

    Obit

While I prefer the paintings of his father and his son, Jamie, I did still appreciate his work, especially his drawing.

See that shit? "merely an illustrator".

    RIP Mr. Wyeth.

The question of whether death and suffering are necessary to great art (and whether that is a timeless tradeoff that should not be tampered with) will make a very good lounge thread at some point.

All in that family were (and are) great artists.
I recommend you all the book Close Friends, with drawings and watercolors mostly, I think the best of Andrew Wyeth, much more than his paintings.
I only have the oportunity to see one painting of Andrew Wyeth in person and was impressive (I really like more his father's paintings-illustrations)

91 years is a long time, but it's still sad news. He was a legend and deserves every bit of the stature and respect he acheived.

Here's a nice article from twenty-two years ago.

Some friends and I were lucky enough to visit the Brandywine Museum on a day that his granddaughter was giving tours of his exhibit, and it struck me how his artistic statements were simple but far-reaching, really touching at the human experience somewhere beyond aesthetics and analysis.

In one of his helga books he expressed his confusion in how people thought that his paintings were sad due to his focus on solitude. He didn't see loneliness as a bad thing at all, and it's that sort of different perspective that I will always remember about him. On those days that I yearn to be a fine artist, it's always him who I think of.

There was a huge huge retrospective here in Tokyo just a couple of weeks ago. Place was packed with people, paintings all-over and the detail in them was insane.

Damn. He was an amazing artist; finding a book of his drawings in the school library was one of my biggest inspirations for a long time. Sad to see him go.

When I passed by Christina's World at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, it blindsided me like a freight train. It's one of the few paintings I've seen that made me wish I could jump into it.

Very sad news. Rest in peace.
