Vydos' sketchbook - step into the void

First of all Hi CA members and I wish you all a happy newyear.

This is my first thread that I post here on CA. I've been redirected to this site/forum by someone from another forum. After seeing some of my art, he gave me some nice advice, some sites and he told me to start a sketchbook on CA to try and improve. I was kinda hesitating on making one after seeing other people's sketchbook though.

A bit about myself, my name is Jonathan and I followed a 2 year course of drawing initiations here in Belgium. I was originally going to follow another 4 year course but due to some circumstances, I was too late with the inscription. My goal is to eventually become a professional artist.

I'll try to draw and upload every day.

Advice, crits, comments, tutorials, anything is welcome to help me improve.

The last 3 drawings are from my last year of drawing lessons. I thought I'd add those so people could see my current lvl.

Not much time to draw today, I managed to squeeze this anatomy drawing.
I'm trying to work my way through my entire anatomy book.

The rest of my upper body anatomy study(the first one is also there). I found it amusing that I unknowingly started using shapes and blocking things to draw the 2nd and 3rd one. I'm having great fun drawing anatomy.

And some eye and nose drawings. I really needed to practice eye drawing, because I never had any idea on how to draw a good realistic eye.

Alright let's do this......*grabs a shovel and starts undigging his old sketchbook thread from the grave*

I was thinking at first to make a new thread but I preferred necro-bumping my...*looks at lost update time* Oh god! 2009! /facepalm.

Jokes asides. I've still been drawing all this time although not as much asI wanted too. Or at least at home. Good thing I still had art classes twice a week to keep me drawing. But here I am again. Burning with vigor. Changed my scaredy cat mentality about my art after reading the awesome "FUCK YEAH" motivation thread and after my awesome art teacher giving a good motivational boost.

So yeah I'm all going to let you sif through my latest drawings/sketches. And I'll keep updating this thread on a regular basis even if I have to post damn awful sketches. *cracks his knuckles* Here we go for the never-ending journey which is progress!

Thanks for the welcome RyanRyan, although I guess it's more a welcome back.

And yeah colour...I haven't really touched the colour studies yet. I did colour a few pieces WAY back. But they were honestly crap. I was going to add them to my excercises next week. On another note, any good excercises to learn to digital paint? I prefer starting with the basics if possible.

Don't have much time to draw on tuesday and wednesday due to work and late art classes(well technically I drew enough if you count the things I draw during my classes...).

But I managed to squeeze this page in with some legs and muscles studies from one of my anatomy books and currently drawing some more gestures drawings but I won't be scanning them today.

And again another day of art classes. So not much time to draw at home but I figured I'd post the things I drew there. Yeah more profiles but made with white chalk on some weird and soft kind of texture. Almost feels like a soft carpet.

And also added 1 small page of imaginative gesture sketches that I squeezed in during luch break at work. I'm trying to practice drawing more from the mind.

It's not much but I want to try to keep this updated daily. I need to draw moar! I must keep the flame alit in me

For today, I was in a loomis mood. I drew some loomis hand sketches (minus a quick study of my own) and some of his gestures.

Time for another update. I still draw almost daily but I really don't like scanning my drawings -> adjusting the quality -> resizing and so on.

Today I'm posting some more gesture drawings. 1 page done without ref and 3 with ref.
1 page of eye studies. Trying to start from scratch because I'm trying to steer clear from the typical manga/anime eyes.
1 page of face drawings done with ref pictures. Same as above, trying to get rid of all that typical manga and anime that stuck on me.
And 2 pages of bottles. Experimenting with inking and black and white effects.

Advice and crits are always welcome.

Didn't draw that much today. Just a page with some female faces and random inked faces. I was experimenting with modifying the face structure and going for something cartoony. I wish I could draw like +2 pages every day. I can be such a slowpoke with my sketches and drawings.

Another day and time to post some of the stuff I did during my art classes.
More profile view drawings done in charcoal, graphite and white crayon. I'm getting quite confident in the profile view drawing although not as much with 3/4 views and views from above and below. I will need to practice those as well.
That...and more gestures and figures....hands... Oh I also need to learn how to colour digitally.

Oh art, how I love your never-ending learning process. But I'll get there taking 1 step at a time. Till then...more faces!

On another note: Should I shrink my drawings more or is the size alright? I keep hesitating what's a good size.

As promised some more faces. One page of quick drawings of people from ref. I was mostly practicing the 3/4 view which is still a weakness.
And one drawing from a statue where I tried to go as detailed as possible. I'm quite satisfied with the result although there are still a few spots that could have done better or made darker.

very good! keep at it! good character/armor ideas. practice of course and surround yourself with great art. observation is as important to me as creating. you can learn alot from one piece.

@Ivan_kolor: Thank you! I'm trying to persevere in my daily drawings/sketches

@Nengrana: Thanks for the comments. I have to agree that my drawings have been involving ever since I started drawing a lot more from observation. Although I can't take any credits for the armor as they're not my own. Was just a fanart drawing of my character in the mmorpg Aion.

For today, two more charcoal drawings from the same statue in profile view. I felt like experimenting a bit with the medium. The first one I wiped a part away in an arc motion, hoping to add a sense of motion.

Second one, just trying to imitate a black on white effect with charcoal. I actually liked how it turned out, although I did burn through some sticks to draw it lol.

Well it's time for yet another long needed update. Unfortunately more heads and faces. I'll be moving on to focusing on full bodies and anatomy studies again soon. As well as getting used to drawing with my tablet which can be seen on the final page.

One page of an attempt at creating drawings I used to draw manga-style into more realistic ones. Some pages of statue drawings. And two more pages of selfportrait from front and side. I got to keep on working and stop being shy to learn colors.

Distraction is really my worst enemy and one I need to overcome. I probably could have drawn way more. But I'm at least happy that I did this one page of gesture drawings. I'm not sure how many I'm going to draw of them. I'm thinking a good 100 but I'll see.

For today two pages of 30 and 60 seconds gesture drawings from http://www.pixelovely.com/gesture/index.php. I'm still struggling with 30 seconds. But I shall persevere . Next up, mixing in a few full body drawings.

And another day passed by. Nothing much besides some more 30s and 60s gesture drawings. And a wip attempt of painting my old stapler digitally. I really have no clue how to learn colors. Tutorials for beginners are hard t find for some reason so I'm just going to paint some random stuff.

Today some more 60 second figures and more practices with orbs. Honestly I have no clue if I'm doing it right considering I don't have any orbs at home. But at least I'm glad that I'm stepping in this unknown territory.

@ Jillisen: Good to know that they do look like one lol.

New day, another page of 60 secs gesture drawings. One more page of where I try to take my time to put the loomis sticky figures on it and some random anatomy. And finally a still life study don't with white crayon on brown paper.
