I really hope this forum takes off and artists can figure out and learn an easy 3D Program that will help them develop their skills for both Concept and Illustration.

I am in NO way a master of sketchup, in fact I realllllllly hope some people can step up and help start this forum rolling by aiding help.

If anyone has ideas for this forum, please post your ideas here.

Most excellent I was wandering when this will pop up after watching both google video and Kemp's DVD tut.

A nice thing would be for a beginners guide that will go through the basic options and icons in the program. Although Sketchup is a very easy program to learn, it's still daunting for someone with little or no 3d background.

yeah, i would love to see something like that.

I think it would be good to have like challenges to build "simple" shapes.
I'm very new to the program so even the simplistic things are still alien to me.

I'm very pleased to see this new addition, thank you. I love Sketchup. If anyone is interested, there's a free renderer plugin, that will turn Sketchup models (which are fairly basic in appearance) into pretty realistic looking affairs with better lighting and texture.

Edit: Davi, I'm a little confused, are you new to Sketchup or "a master"?

Sweetness. Sketchup is tons of fun. I'll post some of my stuff later today. Very cool to see this addition to the forum. After seeing that video of Massive Black using sketchup for the vehicle tut I was blown away. I cant wait to see and learn more about this program.

Sweet. I've only fiddled in Sketchup a few times, but I really want to figure a way to use it as an aid for illustrations & designs.

Some tutorials would be great, from all of you experts out there.

Sketchup subforum is great idea. I started using this program some time ago and it's perfect aid for concept art.

Thanks for the renderer link joeparis. I was looking for some good one. Another promising thing I found lately is LightUp plugin which allows for adding simple realtime light to models. http://www.light-up.co.uk/. There are some quick video presentations of this plugin in "resources".

i need some sketchup on my burger. mmmmm burgers. ;]

i'll be in here a lot. i already got a question:

how do i asymmetrically model two sides of an object? like
in Kemp's video. he was modeling one side as the other side
was doing exactly the same thing. i know how to do this in
Zbrush, but i cannot find the feature in Sketchup.

Matt - I dont know if that's how Kemp is doing it, but here's how I go about it... I create a component of a half of a vechicle. Then copy it and mirror it with the "flip along" option, so that two halfs make a nice full body of the tank. Making components helps you with editing - if you edit one - same changes apply to the other one - that's how you can edit both sides at the same time, a lot like in Zbrush.

Ps. Seeing the first model in Kemps tutorial i think that he does it the same way - you can see the line in the middle of the model - that's where the two components are connected. After you are finished with modeling both sides you can "explode" the two components and get rid of the line.

Yeah. I wondered about this symmetry thing too and later I found that editing one component changes the rest. Later when you can turn it into regular model and it will connect.

Hey guys! I'm so lame for having missed this thread until now :/.

Davi, thanks for putting a sketchup thread up, already we've got sweet hookups for render plugins and some troublshooting to boot.

I only briefly looked through some of the sketchup image posts but I've got some stuff I'm getting together to post up in there so I'll take a long hard stroll through the terrain.

If anyone has any other sketchup questions please feel free to ask in the thread or a pm. Between Rich, Sam and I I think we're like a living, breathing users manual

Also if you somehow avoided the huge banner above my new video has some sketchup all up in it. -kemp

Thanks for creating this section, Sketchup is a very easy to master app.

Thank you for creating this SketchUp forum davi! The program is amazing. I am learning 3Ds Max and while I am a 2D artist, I am learning SketchUp way faster. It is very easy for anyone to pick up after watching the tutorial videos and create some inspiring work for us all. The best feature is that we can get simple or complex work out of SketchUp and share it with others or even draw on top of what we made. I will post some work as soon as can!

Sketchup is an amazing application. Really. It helps out a lot, especially in the field of work I'm getting into.

It's easier than doing the 3D version of buildings in Auto-CAD, and it kinda feels like I'm ousing MSPaint, mostly because it feels easy (not that it actually is, especially if you want to do a really detailed work).

If you can, get your hands on Imagine FX 47 - As always, some excellent articles, including some Sketchup techniques on how this wonderful free program can be used for planning and composition.

This is a great idea, hope to chip in with any help needed, been using it since version 3. Worked with Solo on the Sketchucation site as a Mod until recently (have my own site with another ex-mod now) so plenty help available.
