Great to see you back on track man , which makes me wonder where's the rest of our SSG ?

Tips and notes:

The skulls mos def need work, esp the lower jaw is protruding too much.
That painted girl needs some work - the scalp is out of perspective, more highlights will help too.

Keep pumping out those poses and faces, but watch for proportions, they're a bit off in some places (your recent ones).

I dig the arm studies stuff and the poses in the post before the last one, well done.

Hey everyone,

Im back from vacation and here are some sketchbook pages i made during it

They arent always really great.. it was quite a challange to draw without internet acces
Never able to look up a ref or anything,, but i guess that was a good practice!
Crit as much you like i think i need them! I mightve slipped into bad habbits..

Well it seems that there are still perspective issues mate (esp. the first face)
Other than that there's the random anatomy proportions inaccuracies, (some arms are too short for example) which I think you'll solve with mirroring your stuff (literally).

Another thing I'm missing is value work - you should add shading in your sketches, make it a rule of thumb from now on

I am impressed with the fact that you know where each muscle fits! That's ridiculous ... you're like a live anatomy book

Anyways, great to see an update from you, and I like the volume! I want these amounts daily, or I'll fly to The Netherlands and whip you till submission - AND I'M NOT KIDDING. (I am kidding actually haha)

Took me a while to find a something to crit
But I do see that when you're drawing your face at 3/4 the mouth often goes out of perspective also the rest of the features o the face may "slide a bit" off the center of the face.
(The value portrait needs more contrast, esp harder darks.)

Other than that, it's great to see you do a variety of different faces, and your gestures and figures rock!


Which leads me to me next point: it seems you settled down in a comfort zone of pencil figure sketches, and I think you should do more of these:
*Draw an object in color from life.
*Read up on Gestalt and do some composition thumbs.
*3-point perspective studies.
*And most importantly - do some Environments/Sci-fi/Creature design/Characters - Join the weekly activities here on CA! (it's really fun too)

Hey man! its great to see you do char designs!

Thing I noticed is that you need to get a bigger value range and some higher saturation in some places.
I suggest doing more still lifes and copying photos FTW. (while doing more of these! they're awesome man!)
Shading is off in some places too.

The bust painting might need more highlights (though it could just be a bad pic )

Pencils are good as usual except that big headed dudes eyes and brows, they seem to stretch too long backwards check this attached Loomis page (bottom right):



Also, that coat needs more wrinkles, esp. the bottom part - but you already got that one


*edit: on a second look, I see that you add value to your pencils, but sometimes you don't add values to their clothes, which I think you'll benefit from doing more.

I just viewed your sketchbook from the beginning to the end, and I have to say that I am really impressed by the progress you have made. Very inspirational journey, my friend. Your sense of proportion is much better than it used to be, and so are your anatomy-studies. I love the Brigdman -studies on this last page, by the way! I should do more of those myself.

I also like the character-design ( a sci-fi -medic of some sort? ), but it seems a bit flat. Try to add some shadows to the lower skirt area as well, and make the contrasts a bit higher. Otherwise it's very nice.

@Arthe: Thank you for the kind words Bridgman rocks, though sometimes hard to follow in my opinion :X The char design was just to do something new,, im not great at it.. and coloring this chick ( indeed a medic ) only took 15 mins or so .. shouldve put more time into it right.. ohwell

Watch the perspective on the facial features, both portraits have thier noses a bit off.

WHOA man, great volume! You're really hammering down anatomy.
Everything is just fluid and awesome

The Rocky study needs more work, you can do better.. get into all the nitty gritty details next time, and post the ref!

Lady portrait looks great.

The bottom portrait is good too, but watch the wrinkles on the face, They're too big. It's also a bit more messy too.
I think you're also using bad settings for your PS work- experiment with brushes and check what you do and don't need on pressure sensitivity for each thing.

(And don't think I forgot about composition thumbs, enviros and perspective studies)

I love those gestures! Spend some more time on the masses though, the way some of the shapes overlaps between the pelvis and ribcage arent always correct.

Keep going

When painting, try to keep your contrast low at the beginning. And sculpt it out with more dark or lighter values. That should prevent some of the flatness you have now.

On those speedies yout forms are really soft and the colours are muddy. Be careful of that, and pay close attention to your edges .
