Pinting Fire in photoshop

I have been trying to paint some photo realistic flames by hand in photoshop but I'm having some major hassles.I know of a few methods to paint flames using different filters but am trying to learn to do it by hand(so i'm not cheating) but can't seem to get it right.The reference photos I have been using aren't very good and I can't find any better so I am kind of stuck.
If any of you know of good tutorials to paint flames please let me know as I am stumped.And if any of you have any good tips please let me know.

A good tip is to use a layer set to screen. You can create a few layers set to screen each for a different bright color and use different shades of red pink yellow and orange to lay dow the color. If you'd like you could use a layer mask on each layer and peel away and add w/ shades of gray brushes at different opacities. Aslo the smudge tool can come in handy though use it wisely on a high resolution piece or you'll be sitting and waiting for quite some time.

i think what simpleton is saying makes sense. also, pay heed to the area near the flames. make sure the light from the flame and its warm colours bleed into that area as well.

the way the flame on the second image is fullbright and illuminates everything is awesome. good reference if you ask me.
