    Icon IDW #86: Chess Set

    Topic: Chess Set

Background: A seemingly straightforward topic this round, but as ever there is a snag:

Since we're talking about a Chess Set, this means that every piece of that set belongs to the same 'family'. In other words, the pieces have some common features that make them an actual set rather than a random gathering of pieces. On top of that, in chess every piece has it's own characteristics that set them apart from the other pieces. If it's not clear what every piece represents, playing the game would be rather more difficult.

So, your task for this topic is to come up with at least 3 different pieces of the same chess set. It is okay to make the two opposite sides different not only in color but also in shape, but keep in mind they should still read as one single set.

    Brief:
    1. Design and draw at least three pieces for a chess set!
    2. Make sure the pieces fit together and look like they belong to the same set.
    3. That's it... now draw!

Oooo. Another nice topic. This quite strange as I had just been thinking that this would be a good IDW topic. Great minds think alike obviously. I'm in although how far I get this week is anyone's guess.

    Looking good daestwen.
I have never done this, (IDW's) before, so tell me if I am going wrong please!
This is what I have so far. Might do more characters if I can.
It's the Queen, King & Pawn in case you were wondering.

Nice idea brewin. Will be interesting to see how you show distinction between them.
Started adding colour to mine. Very basic for now. Figure I will complete one at a time.

wow, this week's going by rather swiftly! Hope I get time to get onto this one...
Desmayado, really liking the functional design in yours; I'd recommend trying to smooth out your rendering a little more though, particularly on the white areas; it's looking a bit rough and bumpy at the moment, while I'm guessing it's supposed to be smooth sci-fi plating.
it occurs to me that both my emotions and reactions are ill-placed.

    Here's some mildly unimaginative ideas.

1 - a chess set... they typical iconic stuff
2- the poor man's chess set, twigs wired together, carved horse with wire mane, and a pebble wired to the base. Should I even have a base? Then again, how do you justify a pebble as something you designed for IDW? Hmmm... . I'm trying to figure out how this could have a colour change or something to show another side.

Edit: I think the attachments work now- thanks Mr--Jack.

    Some crits:

daetswen- Good ideas. I really like your rook. I think some sort of continuity between the pieces would be beneficial. (Colour, ...which isn't there yet, bases, an emblem repeated etc.)

zimfin- You seem to be ranging into characters more than idw. Would these be made of plastic like star wars figurines? How would you show that if they were?

brewin- I like your idea, but I'm thinking it might be a bit hard to tell which is which.

the macedonian- Neat idea. I notice that your queen and king all attach to a base while your hunter doesn't. Continuity again.... You might also try to make your king look more balanced on his ax.

desmayado- Really neat idea! I like that they can be used in no gravity (..i'm getting this right, right? Your english if fine btw ) If you were to just happen upon your set would you know which piece was which?

Alright, wip's here; fairly 'chess-set'-y at the moment, but I've gone with enormous scale here, so they're all military sort of robots that play large and quite serious games of chess . . . perhaps as a replacement for war in the future.

edit... oh, and pixie trick, your attachments aren't working...

    updated Fri morning

    Some good entries so far.
I started with a simple idea, cause, Im a simpleton. I have two pieces partially done. I hope I can finish them all.

Updates: I did these 4, I was working on a knight, but it wasnt turning out like I wanted. so seeing this if 4, think I will get on with finishing these more and a background......of some kind so that I am at least ready for final this time. hmm noticed the rook isnt the same as I wanted. hopefully will have time to fix.

This is what i have so far. I'm going for witches on one side and wizards on the other (not sure if I'll get around to it). The witches are carved out of onyx, and the wizards would be crystal, or white marble. I'm thinking about redoing the bishop to be a witch holding a crystal ball.

Sorry I have been side-tracked. No chance of finishing this one. As mentioned earlier, mine was leaning a lot more toward character design than IDW anyway. Great stuff though from you guys.

Mr- Jack seen the finals Love them. well except for one, being an avid chess player myself, I would have liked to have seen a little more pose and grace taken in the design of the queen. when I think of the Queen naturally don't think of her as one that is heavy and bulky as the rook (castle walls) nor is she as devoted to a single colour as the bishops, but rather she is smaller and in build taller in height, and she moves with power and grace across the board.

THe whole hovering concept does help, but a few more delicate features may have presented a feminine aspect to her, think of her not as an elephant but as a large cat. that's just my opinion. I'm guessing you wanted to focus more on the power aspect of the piece which you have done pretty well I think if that's the case.

    Desmayado, nice clean mechanical designs
it is better to have sketched and sucked than to never have sketched at all.
