these are from photo ref; I usually prefer going to the zoo, or doing some of my own photos. but it's a bit of a hassle right now with a big belly in the way of everything. so I just stay at home and work from my desk.

Nice watercolors
On the first one in the last post I think it's a bit hard to see where the head is on the left cat. I had to look a bit before i found it. Not really sure about how to make it more apparent though. Mermaid is looking good too... But I think the torso might be a little too long, since I expect it to be a foreshortened from that angle.
Keep it up![]()

I think you need to use less lines when you draw your figures. Scribbles are just scribbles... But I still think those sketches would look a lot better with more determined pencil strokes![]()

oh thoseyeah that's what I get when I just start to aimlessly doodle till I figure out what I'm making.
these aren't too hot; but they do mark a rather annoying struggle to get the shoulderblades right.

Hey ashess, thanks for the comment in my SB. I think the work you're doing in here is great and you're seeing a lot of progress. A few pages ago your portraits were a bit off but after the facial studies you did, I think that element of your work improved a lot. The watercolors and the mermaids are looking good as well. For the carnival piece, my crit is to be careful to separate your foreground and background a little more. I gather that the figure is standing far in front of the carousel due to size comparison, but there is little difference in contrast and saturation between those two areas in space. By lowering the contrast on the carousel and bringing a little more color into the figure, you can intensify the sense of depth in the image and cement the focus as well. Keep up the good work!

Hey ashess, good work in here. All of those watercolors are nice, good work with those, the tiger is a really nice piece.
The character in the carnival piece has a lot of black in him. I think it would be best to shy away from black, especially when painting skin... unless you're painting deep chiaroscuro in a figure, black really throws off skin. Try using darker values of the skin color to make those shadows instead, he will look a lot better for it.
Good work though![]()
thanks dierat; that's some good ideas for getting farther along with this picture.. glad you see improvement in the faces. don't really feel that way today :p but that happens.
sebbon: ye I think I'll change that original black layer to darken and merge it with the color layer so I can make it more subtle from there. good call.
so now on to what depressingly little I did, like this entire week.
first, self portrait. that was ok.
then I went on to try and do the backs right. that sucked. got into a debth fight with it too..

then, I checked my bridgman book. that helped.
well, a little at least.

9-7-9, half past 5 in the afternoon, Rem was born. I am pleased to say that, despite the birth itself taking somewhat long, he is in exellent health.

Nice animal paintings, I might have to paint something myself (with actual paint of course).
