hey there, nice studies so far. that still life cup with the garlic is stunning! your traditional work is also really beautiful. but you shouldn't forget to make some anatomy studies although that male character you posted looks nice it feels like there's something wrong about the anatomy. i guess he could use some more "shape", his body seems a little like a tube...hope you know what i mean. i'm bad at explaining >_>

LuxAeterna Thanks for the crit. I guess I wanted his armour to have a shape of it's own...but that's just me inventing excuses.

Ok so big art dump to compensate for my one month absence. Reviewed some of the comments on my sketchbook and decided to do some anatomy studies, msotly torsos, eyes and hands.

Also stumbled accross some really awesome artists, mainly David Finch and Stephen Bauman, did some studies of their work as well.

The digital stuff are just some studies of materials and environments.

Will post some life drawings tommorrow.

Unfortunately I can't give any tips, so I'll join the others in saying that your rendering is really good. How do you get greytones with charcoal? Mine is always completely black.

@LordLouis I usually smudge with my finger/chamois cloth, but I also use charcoal ''pencils'' which come in different intensities (from dark to light).

Of course I'll crit, here goes something that I hope will help you. By the way Im very jealous that you're an art student, something that hopefully I don't have long to wait for!

These thumbnails are good, and that is a great direction to go in. Value is EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING! Without good value structure and image is nothing (to my mind at least). These last ones are great because they show stronger brushwork than I've seen throughout the rest of this sketchbook. It looks like you thought "I'll be bold with these" and it really paid off. I would highly recommend sticking to grayscale paints until you are starting to nail those values, before you move on.

My advice to you would not be to keep it quick though. Take your time and just think "this will take as long as it takes". I don't mean that its important to get all the details in, but that you really nail those values and take your time to understand what edges you are seeing with questions like "where are the transitions? where are the flat areas of colour?"

My main criticism for the digital paintings I have seen so far is that you are using fussy brushes. You should use a brush on almost 100% opacity at first, from my experience. Today's post shows more solid brushwork than previous paints. Recently I abandoned my brushset (a mixtures of all sorts of complex and fussy brushes) and just used three basic ones: palette knife, hard round, soft round (I painted almost entirely with the first two). This helped me a huge amount and I can't recommend it enough.

In essence what Im trying to say is, dont try and dive straight in with colour, value, composition, hundreds of brushes etc. Keep it simple, just a few brushes, and just value work and you will get some impressive results I'm sure.
