it depends on the type of paper u use. but usually i like between hb and 2h... i mostly use f these days. and tombo brand is the best by far, they never havea problem with broken lead or grit in the graphite

It depends on what you're trying to do and what your intentions are. I personally use softer graphite pencils, preferably woodless. Anywhere from HB to 6B. If you're really looking for hard led but want it to show up, I wouldn't go higher than 4h. It's nice and subtle but it can be picked up by a scanner.

Another thing is that graphite isn't black. It shows up more of a metalic gray on the page because that's what it is. I've noticed on a couple forums, indeed I have made this mistake too, that people complain about the way their scans are comming out when they scan graphite and have their scanners auto-adjust on. The image tends to look really grainy as the software mistakes graphite for black and increases the contrast to a ridiculously high level. It's best to adjust the levels manually...I know you didn't ask but this is a useful tip others might like.

I don't have a favorite.

I almost always use the first pencil I find.
Only if I plan to work small I look for a harder pencil if the first one is a 4B for example.
A soft lead will make it look grainy if you are shading.

And for bargue drawing I'm not that careless.

I had to disable the adjustment stuff ... but I use normal pencils.

I draw mostly on sketchbooks... so I enjoy using mechanical pencils and lead holders... they give me the sharpness and style I need... pop various types of lead in... sharpen... and ready to go... :cool:

I prefer Techniclick 2 mechanical pencils for small details because their smooth and easy to use. Also i like to use 6b and 4b because i like bold looking drawings:bash:

It doesnt matter what you use...Find what you like to draw with on your own, thats what art is... an exploration. I love going to an art supply and buying new stuff and seeing what happens when i work with them.

I use Col-Erase blue pencils most of the time, I like the color ,it doesnt make make my hands dirty so easily,You can erase it, it's easy on my eyes, it doesnt photocopy after i inked over it, and i just like the color... But that is my preference and my choice...Note the pencil in my ear HA!

To me the harder the lead the stiffer things look and the less natural, if anything give me a 2B lead pencil over a mechanical pencil any day, the more disposable the better.

anywayz - i always use hb in a pencil holder clicker or otherwise but i do have a favorite pencil and its a pentel 0.7
i feel naked without it-

I hate art! But when I feel compelled to draw I use Castell 9000's no harder than 2B and as soft as 8B. Mostly I use 'em to stab punks in my cell block in the neck when they don't recognize! Fool!
