Mike Metcalf::::: 3d illusion and figure drawing added

    Hey folks,
My name is Mike. added my first attempt at one of those wobble gifs that look a bit like 3d (on the last page)

Lions Tigers and Bears volume 3 is now available! It's about 125 PAGES of full color comic art and is currently on Amazon.com! Written by the Magical Mike Bullock with Art by (me) Mike Metcalf and a cover by the Magnificent Mike Ploog. Many many Mikes, AMIRIGHT?

Newest updates are at the end of the thread. Bewb and weiner warning.

    Later Taters!
    Michael

Some stuff to start off the thread:
    1) Lighthouse from City of Heroes
    2) a pinup of Footpath and Venger for a crossover comic from Ronin Studios
    3) Oinkment; a character I play in City of Heroes

Some great characters and ideas here - nice flowing poses and such. Maybe brushh up on your anatomy a bit. You seem to know the general stuff but some of it looks a bit wrong and stylized.
Great stuff though so keep it up!

Nice stuff! I don't always like the slightly cartoony Luke Ross/Joe Madureira/Art Adams etc etc. style in some comics, but I can appreciate it. I think the way you've bumped it up a bit in that Iron Fist & Luke Cage pic, and toned it down for Wonder Woman, works magic. The stylised look on the Hulk's digits also jumps out at me, for some reason.

The only two crits that come to mind straight away are that Ghost Rider's skull looks a little slim and surprised, and DD's skull seems slightly oblong, or missing a bit at the back, too. (Great hatching and everything else, tho.)

    ...which is only my opinion.

Here are a some of my airbrush paintings (non-digital):

PS Some of these are pretty old crappy grainy jpegs so I'll try to find better quality scans if I have any.

Awesome sketchbook! You have a great style going. You seem to know how to do realistic portraits pretty well so your stylized stuff is pretty justified. This site needs more exaggerated, cartoony drawings. I don't know why everyone gets so uptight if not everything is realistically rendered or perfect from an anatomy standpoint. It's hard to capture that sense of dynamism with something so realistic anyway. That's why so many comic artists, animators, and character designers choose to exaggerate what they're drawing. It's pushing the drawing to the limit and I think you're doing that just fine.

I'd like to resist starting an off-topic arty-farty nerdbitchfight on your sketchbook over Bubbagump's comments, but it's proving very difficult with juicy tempting nuggets like 'this site needs more cartoony, exaggerated drawings', 'everyone gets so uptight' (apart from this post: where?) and 'pushing the drawing to the limit' (are you sure you don't mean 'to the x-treme'?).

So I'll just compliment your airbrush paintings instead. They're very proficient. I'm interested to see the other scans if you find any, but I think the top two in particular suit the grainy 'antique photo' look
    ...which is only my opinion.

Thanks BigTayter. For the older airbrush nudes I probably used fitness magazines or possibly nudie mags for reference. Now I usually use googled images for reference.

Here's an illustration from a drawing jam on another forum, source photo also attached (from femjoy.com I think):

Thanks whitepython. I appreciate your visit.

That's neat that you do airbrushing too, Bigtayter. All my new stuff is strictly digital, but i used to airbrush kind of a lot and I think it helped me learn to be patient and build up shading gradually. I miss airbrushing but digital is so much easier to fix when you make a mistake!

To answer your question, I haven't used it much as a touch-up. airbrushing over anything with a texture (like pastels or paint or paper with pencil lines embedded in it) can create frustrating overspray patterns. When I was airbrushing I'd start with a very light pencil sketch and then airbrush over it lightly with india ink or black liquid watercolor. Then I'd go over the whole thing many times with finer and finer strokes building up the dark parts gradually and trying to leave the light areas alone.

Great SB, love the fun, stylised comic book stuff.

And nice airbrushing too. I haven't touched my airbrush for a while either.
Great to see traditional skills on display. Any medium with no undo button is a great way to learn.
