THUNDERDOMES! @ The Art Institute of Seattle may 19

Hello everyone and welcome to a new thread to showcase the thunderdome winners from my concept art classes. This is a 200 level class and the students are just learning to paint digitally in most cases. They are required to produce 75 thumbnails traditionally in their sketchbooks, then select their favorite 3 for cleaning up in Photoshop.

In class the students are required to draw specific themes while listening to music and being read stories, and also produce mind-maps of the subject matter. Some exercises start with random texture photographs I bring in, and they paint what they see or what I suggest that they see. They also draw with their eyes closed and pass the paper to the next student to continue. We have a lot of fun in this class and I think the students are learning a wide range of ideation techniques.

Here are some of the winners from previous quarters. The prizes were DVDs of Shawn, Marko, et al and t-shirts from the Seattle Massive Black conference, which were graciously given to me by Jason. Thanks Jason! The goodie box was put to good use. If you ever have extras, you know where to send them.

The first two pieces were produced by Duncan. The remaining thumbnails in order are: Jordan (3), Jeremy (1), and Richard (1)

    Wow, simply wow!
There's a ton of great ideas being represnted here.

If we can get even a fraction of the talent involved here to start regularly attending the Seattle Sketch Group meetings we'd be an artistic JUGGERNAUT!

I would love to run through some of your exercises within our group. Perhaps you could lead an ideation demo some time??

S!R They never cease to amaze me! Sure, I'll do an ideation demo!

Re@per Thanks, I built this class last fall and it has been a hit

sony thanks of behalf of Jeremy who did the steam punk work

yaowangdi Yes, I know they struggle to do 75 thumbnails for each class, but in the long run they will be thankful they did

microland How can you contain all of this in your head! Insane! HA!
This work was done by many different students, not me! It is a concept art class at the Art Institute of Seattle

Here are some from the FALL 2008 quarter. I have tons to upload but will start with these.
The students do a mind map in class before they start drawing, then do the 75 thumbnails,
then pick 3 to 5 of their favorites for working up in grayscale in Photoshop.
Later in the quarter they will doing color and texture work on the best ones.
The students are generally in their 5th quarter, with almost two years to go before getting their BFA,
so they get pretty good before they graduate! These are Casey's.

    Glad you are enjoying it!
I am seven weeks behind in putting up the winners,
but this is the last week of the quarter so I should have
    more time over the break.

The use of shadows looks useful for designing creatures. Seems to work for you! I may have to try it sometime.

    Wish they were all mine!
This is the work of the students at The Art Institute of Seattle,
Concept Art class. One of the ideation techniques they explore is
using a 20 percent gray to doodle shapes, then "find" what's there.

Ha! I just went back and did the big caps! The classes top out at 23 students and they are all progressing by leaps and bounds. I only show the top three per week which are voted on by the other students.

I thought I would take a look to see if any students have continued to put their work on here. I resigned from teaching last January, but hope this thread will continue!
