figure work is hot bro! dope shit all around this thread.
Thank everyone for stopping by and seeing me grow. Im finally free from the clutches of school for 3 weeks(I just finished my 3rd semester). I have learned so damn much and I cant wait to put it to good use. I have so many great classes next term that I cant wait to dive into. Throught out the term I learned how to paint in acrylics, learned about tons of artists, and Im loving every part of it. For a while in my sketchbook I was having a rough time, and just wanted to stab the hell out of it, but I worked through it and found a very good solution to my crappy drawings and frustrations. So I'll start off by showing you guys some sketches, that Im not to happy about(Im actually not going to show a lot more, that I think are just flat out CRAP!) at the time, but they were necessary for me to do in order to find a clearer route.

These are all drawing from my old sketchbook. What Im doing is keeping a sketchbook per term, so that when school is over I can look back and see improvement.
What was happening to me was that my drawings were losing life and structure. So I tried something one of my teachers told us to do in class all the time, and what do you know, it worked out great. He always told us to be fast and loose in the begining(drawing very lightly of course). This gives you a starting point, and since we tend to start off with the details this breaks our nasty habits. So since that day Ive been trying it and it has helped out a ton. I forget sometimes and my drawings will get stiff and boring, so I try to stay away from that at times.
What im working on now is
-exaggeration
-precise lines(Every line and shape has to count for something or else, its just pointless).
-Feeling and emotion behind a drawing
-why? I ask myself that all the time, why does the character look that way, or why am I drawing this. I apply it to all sorts of things really.
-Touch. Touch is something another one of my isntructors referred to. Its as if we can actually feel the person or object we are drawing. Say...
Egon Schiele, he was great at it, cuz all of his drawings were full of life. The linework itself was full of emotion and touch.
-Design. Ive been reading some books on composition and design and now Ive come to realize how super important it is. It comes before anything else in a drawing/painting.
-Anatomy....i get sooo confused at times...![]()
anyways, sorry for my ranting...
Ill post paintings, figure drawings, and drawing from my newest sketchbook for this term soon.
cya and thanks for looking

...I have a sketchbook?
You are armed well ~ don't give up ~ the sketchbook are multiplying ~ I see them growing on the shelves of the art supply stores and Hobby Lobby ~ we are outnumbered ~ don't look at a blank page for over 5 seconds or your eyes will explode!!!! Come visit
mentler: Oh im not giving up! thx for the nice words
Helium: You know thats right! Eventhough we joke about it at school, Kato knows what he's talkin about.

isnt it great to be back in school? lol, i like the new style your heading into , try experimenting with it more, could be nice and frresh for illustrations-if thats your thing if not then, keep it up anyways. lol
post up more of your paintings
GOOD GOLLY ! You're gestures are nice...I mean really nice, especially starting from the guy with the spear and the rest going down. Congrats on doing something different than the rest of your class, the result is beautiful. I enjoy loose and stylish drawings way more than "academic" type studies, they radiate so much personality and intention that's completely unique.
DO MORE O' THAT SHIT MAN !!
And the rest of sketchbook is pretty fucking awesome too and I'm the jealous type !!![]()
Oskar, great stuff in your sketchbook. I especially like the creature/animal designs. Soon you'll start the next term - please keep us updated, I'm so excited about all the stuff you are learning and to follow your progress.
Jester

Holy Moly I.W.I.! These are greeeat! Dont be hard on yourself, I see no crap here! Your gestural figure studies are awesome because you draw the figure in angles that imply curves rather than fiddling with getting the curves just perfect, it gives them a new intensity that I dont think would be there if you just tried to super-render your figures down to every subtle variation in the form. I enjoy your sketchbook pages too, even though it seems like they are random interactions between your brain and hand, they seem somewhat composed, like you were'nt thinking about them, and thats how your brain and your eyes like to see stuff arranged in the page. I think the subconscious element of the sketchbook is why so many people gravitate towards the daily sketchbook forum...not to see uber-finished, polished stuff, but for some insight into how really great artists think when they aren't thinking about it, if that makes any sense. Anyway, I digress, great stuff and very insughtful!

imglue: you bet it is. It's refreshing to know that Im under deadlines and get to try out new things. I actually am very interested in illustration and I'll be trying it out more.
Dennal Floss:Thx. I want to incorporate a much looser line quality into my drawings, and then combine that with a more academic line and hopefully get the best of both worlds.
Jester: Thx for following along, sorry I havent kept this thread updated, but hopefully I'll stay ontop of things. As far as classes for this term go, I have color theory, graphic design for illustrators, rendering techniques, contemporary figurative painting, and intro to illustration. All the classes are fun and I'm learning a ton. I'll be posting wips of paintings and such in here.![]()

Opp...I just finished this assignment for my color theory class and decided to post it.
For the assignment we are supposed to use only two complementary colors plus white to make a painting. So I used painter and went at it and this is what I got (we had to use ref).

The purpose of this was that in real life there aren't many saturated things in everyday moments. As artists and designers we tend to exaggerate saturation so that our paintings come out looking nicer. By being limited to only 3 colors, you get a less saturated image, but closer to what it might look like in real life.

Hi Oskar, great to hear from you again. It's almost incredible that you already are in your second year at AC, isn't it? I'm looking forward to your wips and am always breathless for the line quality in your sketches. Enough bellybrushing now, you know how I envy you!![]()
The hyena is great - why did you choose to do it in Painter instead of traditionally (which would have been my first "natural" attempt)? And did you create the palette first to color pick for your painting?
Thanks for sharing!
Jester
Bojee: thx for stopping by
Jester:hi, I havent heard from you in a while, and yes you're right I am in my second year of art center.Time goes by really fast. anyways, I chose to do it in painter, cuz I had other assignments to concentrate on so I couldn't really spend the time mixing with real paints, although I think I'll try that later sometime because I know that I'll learn much more from doing it with trad medium. I did create the palette first.
here's another update:
elongated proportions, but theres still something there I like about em.
Very simple, but I think its the design of the shapes that holds it together. Also the emotion....I think
Another simple one. I think designwise, its sorta working...
sketches
I got this new sketchbook that has that yellow tint to it and it was waay to bright when I scanned it, but when I desaturate the paper, it looks really antique, which I didnt really expect.
