    I need your guys' opinion.

    Thanks van and Azrael

Allright, I need your guys' opinion on a little issue I've got here.

I'm trying a new approach with this illustration. I first drew the whole thing with ink on different sheets of tracing paper so if I messed up it'd be no big deal and I could just redo any part of it. I wanted the little insecurities and hiccups of working with ink to show up. So that's why I didn't go with doin the inkwork digitally.

Next, I took it into PS and I wanted to get my idea across with flat and simple shapes. I want to focus on design and not so much on rendering for a while.
Anyways, here's the result and this is where I need any input you guys have.

Should I keep the blue stars, the red stars, or no stars? The stars symbolize the little house getting knocked out, or knocked around in the river, and this mans curiosity brings him to the house.

If the star idea doesn't work, or make any sense, and it just looks better without them. Which border looks better...black or white?

Any other comments or crits are welcome.
    Thx everyone!

Damn man lots of great work in here.. the studies from the 5th element are really sweet. About the latest illustration.. I'm not sure if the stars are really reading.. wasnt sure what they were all about until scrolling back up and reading your post. They do catch your attention though. For the border, personally I'd go with black.. it seems to draw less attention and bring our focus more into the frame.

-So Ive got one vote for the blackborder (stars confusing but atract attention).

-Another vote for just the black border

-And lastly for a vote on the blackborder, With the red stars.

Well, I've figured out that I'll keep the black border but I'm still not sure about the stars. Any more votes out there?

i dont really see the point of the stars. personal opinion.

I mean if u didnt tell me what the stars symbolized I wouldnt have known!

Maybe if the house was tilted or upside down it would read better, even without the stars that it was tossed.

Over all i dont feel it would reinforce it, but in the end the piece overall is strong.

    hope that helped a bitt!

It did help Endregan, cuz I had the same thoughts about the stars.
But I thought that design wise they're nice too look at, but that doesn't necessarily make it a better piece. Thx for your input.

I like the white border because its more of a fun feeling while the black border is dark and mysterious. Great work.

!! im extremely jealous about the pen & ink class. wish i could take one. what do they teach you there - i mean beyond the obvious? any good tips/materials/books you could share?

all in all a nice book you got going here man. really liked the pen monkeys as well.

    keep posting.

    edit:

for the piece above, have you tried to replace the stars with the flies but keeping the ellipses? you get to have the flies in the piece while at the same time have that movement around the little house going...
not sure if that would work but perhaps you should give it a quick try...

Finally, my painting skills are starting to pay off. I've been painting with acrylics alot lately, and it's been working really well.
So today I decided to give digital painting a shot. I had never understood how to get subtlety like I did with traditional media until today....

    and lemme tell you guys....

    IT'S A FAN FREAKIN TASTIC FEELING!!!!pld:

Anyways, I painted from movie stills of The 5th Element.
They range from 45 min. to an hour.

    cops

    mangalores (I think that's what they're called)

    homeboy asian

the hero (for this one I just wanted to concentrate on my shape design)

    the 5th element herself

    Thx for stopping by.

I'll try and keep this bad boy updated more regularly

I replied already but it got eaten up....

    Those digi-paintings rock!

I was honestly not expecting them after the more stylized pics just before.

Also, there are some "issues" (read with snooty British accent) with the forum as they are updating. There's a thread in the lounge devoted to it, but one of the things I saw was that you can't change the title of your thread.

glikster: Thanks. The digi paintings look different because I'm just doing them to practice.
I don't consider them as finished pieces so I don't care what style they're in.
I'm doing them to help me in my personal illustration work where I'm combining painting and drawing in one.
I'll show you guys in a couple of weeks once I've finished my projects.

    Here's a paintover I did for mainloop.
You guys should go check out his drawings. They rock!
