Update on Paris..I like no.1 but her nose was wrong and so I changed it and the angle of her chin, might work on it tomorrow if I can (it's for the Caricaturama Showdown 3000)...

Got all inspired watching Jason Seilers 'The Art of Sketching' DVD...I highly recommend...did a few thumbs using basic shapes and then picked the best one and worked it up.

for the paris update: it's more dynamic the way u did it

i too watched jason seiler but haven't practiced enough what he said.

for the last one, i suggest you tweak the shapes a bit:
the forehead shape and the under nose+mouth shape is the same size, perhaps unbalance them is better

his expression (straight mouth) and eyebrows direction could be more exagerated

i think u could harmonize more the overall (more unity)

Hey Angel,
Those last sketches really show the inspiration you got by the DVD, they're way better than you previous sketches.
i would love to see you work with some more subtle color variations when you render out a character, use an underpainting, mix some colder colors into the skintones to make them more believeable. Also you should focus on sharpening your 'final' image a bit more, I always add a layer on top on which I do a few subtle lines with the pencil tool to create harder edges at places where I want more focus.

Hi zou thanks for the crit I think I might have worked on the shapes you mentioned in the painting stage. I'll have a look with fresh eyes tomorrow. With the Paris sketches, do you mean the first painting is more dynamic? If so, I agree, I changed it too much and it's lost that 'pop'. Thanks again.

I'm studying colour theory and other fundamentals at the moment to brush up, thanks for the suggestions I will work on sharpening edges too, it's sometimes hard not to get carried away with the painting and not think about things like that. Trying a technique Jason uses, using a ball point pen to draw on the watercolour paper, thought I'd try it out on my friends parents commission and don't think it turned out too bad

your watercolor is even greater than what i've seen, but it could be greater if the borders of the coloring were more irregular , (the botton border) like continuing to color an arm then fade it

oh, i got two question mixing watercolor what do u do to darken your color ?

i tried to use the black provided by my box (and sometimes darker color of same family) like adding burnt umber to a warm color (but sometimes it's not enough dark)

and what is the maximum of watercolor layers do u lay to have your color ?

zou sorry it's taken me a while to get some time on here. How weird that CA keeps losing your posts, I've not experienced it myself. Thanks for the compliment and crit on the watercolour I agree about the bottom border I did try but red is such a strong pigment that if you don't paint on a damp surface or water it down enough it stains the paper and it's difficult to lift off (which is what happened) I really enjoyed doing it and plan on doing more this way . My pet is awesome isn't he? I've had him a week now and I'm still learning how to keep him happy, he's only had one hissy fit so far where he puffed his beard out but it looked more cute than anything Sorry yours ran away, bummer!

To answer your questions: to darken colours I use prussian blue and burnt umber mixed together usually, and to varying degrees depending on how warm or cool I want the shadow. I only use a limited pallette anyway of Crimson Red, Cadmium Yellow, Prussian Blue, Burnt Umber and Yellow Ochre (occasionally if I need a brighter red then I'll add Cadmium Red to the the Crimson) I never use black, a big no-no, if I add too much prussian blue and it's too cold then I'll add more burnt umber and maybe a little crimson red to warm it up again.

As for maximum layers, I'm not sure lol, I try to use a little as possible, so as not to ruin the paper, so I usually start by doing the skin tone, I'll mix the right tone using yellow, crimson and yellow ochre and then I'll water down a bit of it so it's very transparent and do a wash all over leaving the highlights. I'll wait for it to almost dry then I'll layer it up using a less transparent mix usually concentrating on the edges to try and create a 3D form, I like to do this when the first layer isn't totally dry so it still bleeds into each other a bit and then see how it looks. Then I'll keep doing this and adding blues and reds into the mix depending on whether I'm painting the nose and cheeks and skin around the eyes (red) or the chin (blue) and then when I'm satisfied I'll use a purple to paint in the shadows on the neck etc.. I think all in all I try not to exceed ten layers of paint but it all depends on how dark you want the values, the cardigan on the lady for example I just kept painting, waiting for it to dry, seeing how light it dried and then decided it needed to be darker, I think I ended up doing ten layers. I'll try and do a step by step at some point, it'll be interesting for myself to see if I can make my process more efficient.
