Pretty cool blog with some lovely dresses and poses - just putting this here to remind myself about it...I'm always finding nice ref and losing it on my messy computer.

Thanks zou the etchingswere hard work but fun. I might finish that blue dress study.
here's some sketches for CHOW
Heya! I havent been here in a while but thought I'd pop in and check out your lovely updates! You've been busy! and you're really improving too! Keep it up hun and looking forward to seeing more!
Where have you been going to make your etchings? They're not done at home are they?? They're rocking!
Hiya Belindi Thanks for poppin by, I've definitely been busy, my new job on switchboard is great i can draw all day and surf the web so I'm in heaven at the moment, if only those damn people would stop ringing..tsk! The etchings were done at Victoria Kershaws studio in town, she runs workshops twice a week and I did a block of sessions, if I can exhibit these and they sell I'll keep going back and do more.
Here's an update on my courtier, I've changed my mind again back to the first sketch (isn't that always the way) thanks to a bit of feedback plus the hip hop one wasn't coming across as a courtier, but I'll still finish it, I've done the pencil sketch which I'll upload after I've done this...

Well here she is finished...not turned out how I hoped but ran out of time and energy...must sleep
Haha, love her expression!
Yeah, i can see that it can be better, with your current painting skill. But don't sweat it too much, it happens to everyone. Keep the spirit up and make more stuffs, you'll just keep getting better and will eventually able to keep up with deadlines![]()

hi
i like the second colored post,
but the second bw has something more than this one (the colored)
perhaps the contrast or just the plant on the right!
keep the good work mate !
Yay! Good for you! So, this isn't finished right? I hope you are not eliminating her mask and not replacing it with anything, cuz the way her hand is, it's indicating that she's holding something. And you can add people back in there in the background, now that the plantation is gone (maybe because you felt the plant was too distracting?) cuz the way it is now, it's too empty in that area, you could add some bit of weight there by add some shapes and/or colors. well, ... you get the idea.
But i like her dress better. And the skin's rendering is improving. Push push puuush!![]()

Hiya witcrack Nah that wasn't finished yet, just managed to finish it with 15 minutes to spare...I'm such a last minuter! Hope I pushed it enough, I got stuck between making her pretty and looking a bit ridiculous, maybe should have gone more one way or the other? I'm pleased with most of it though. Thanks for the crits
Final CHOW entry

quick photoshop sketch, no ref, just had to draw something different before going to bed.
3 hour study from ref
Here's some CHOW ideas -
1 + 2 - Queen of ballads and/or cheesy love songs
3 + 4 - Queen of soul + funk (standing pose looks too hip hop?)
Second or Fourth, Second or Fourth, Second or Fourth, .... nnhh... Second! I voted for the second
Btw, I have been trying to do this theme of ChOW too. But haven't got any idea transferred to paper/digital canvas yet. Have to try harder...
But hey, what's that about me talking about me in your thread. Sorry
As for your piece, whichever you choose, block some wide solid colors first, not only it can have you work faster, it can also guide your judgment better and prevent your work to have too much unnecessary marks. Hope that can help you in your "race"
Oh and i like your addition to your signature. Thoughtful. It's not like i know anything about your unfair voting system though, but i can relate it to how it is where i am now.

third
ps: her legs can be taller !
good luck for the chow
Of the four the last one is the only one that remotely resembles a queen. Be sure to give her a strong back light, so the rim around that afro will give her a Halo. Purple key light - that's royalty - and yellow rim (purple's complementary). Drop the point of view a little, so the viewer is looking up at her instead of eye to eye. Ditch the crown, it's overstating the concept. Instead stylize the afro somewhat to look a little like a crown, somewhat like nicholas does. Don't overdo it through. Next use some pastiche and work symbols like hearts, spades, clubs and/or diamonds into the patterning. Subtle, and don't do all of them. Stay away from white, or she'll look Catholic
Hope that helps you in some way. Keep it up>

Witchrack Hi thanks for the colour blocking suggestion, I've decided to do both of them, was going to do a king and queen but I don't know, I have a good idea for a king of funk![]()
Zou Thanks
Brendan Thanks very muchthat was really helpful, I'll keep in mind what you've said definitely. Cheers
update not chow, well my own chow. The witches from Terry Prachett's Wyrd Sisters, reading it at the moment and had to draw them, I'd like to do a finished piece sometime.
Magrat, Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg
outline progress...
Bit a detour for this post. I found some old BTEC work I did back in '97.
1.Some calligraphy I can't even remember doing, I'm pretty sure it's mine, but I have a sneaky suspicion it's one of my classmates :z
2. A copy of a Henry Tissot painting done in the style of Matisse...well..supposedly
3. And a portrait of Christian Slater in Alkyd. My first oil based painting and my tutor Bob Hunter was just brilliant, he really had a nice portrait technique and taught me alot. He did mainly editorial work and movie posters, his Indiana Jones was just cool. Sadly I found out a few years ago that he died in a car accident on his way to work, I kinda wanted to share the memory as he deserves to be remembered...anyway, here's to Bob *cheers*

Hehehe, granny weatherwaxamazing character
have you seen the works of Paul Kidby (www.paulkidby.com)? Has a lot of work done on discworld series.
The only thing I don't see quite clear is the pose of nanny ogg, looks like she would be leaning back and forth at the same time..
Great works by the way![]()

wow, how lucky you are ! those works are from 97 ?
they are damn great !
the sitting woman reminds me of van gogh early work, (don't know why)
Thanks for dropping by guys
Quike Thanks for your observation I will work on that, i didn't use ref at all so just need to find some, Ah Paul Kidby! Thank you, I was trying to remember his name. I always think of Josh Kirby who does the book covers, wierd how they have siimilar names
Zou aw thanks, I'm always kicking myself that I never carried on drawing as much, I could have been kicking ass now if I'd carried on studying .
Anyway here's a shoe study i did at work the other day @D
Mmm... nice!Good planes recognition on the shoes study.
Slater portrait is good too. I really like how you made the skin-tone clean and simple, i'm no good with oils (yet?), can't get neat with it.
Well, keep it up you. Draw more and kick some ass soon![]()

Thanks Witcrack I used Alkyds for the Slater portrait, they dry faster than oils makes it easier to paint over bits and not get the colours muddy, I always tend to do that too. I think it helped as well that we used a limited palette and my tutor was there to give tips
Well here's my update for the chow, funk queen. I've decided not to do the other one now, I've got a few commissions on at the moment that I need to concentrate on (not that I'm complaining but they're due about the same time as the chow, sods law!)
Ah yeah, THe ChOW. I haven't yet done anything about it... *sighs*
Good pose there, your Queen. One thing that need fixing is her knees, they're too edgy. Another thing is, ... well it's prob'ly just a matter of taste and preference, but i think she's too skinny...
Good luck with it, though(color, color, colors!

Witcrack Yeah, the weeks are creeping by slowly but steadily and less than 2 weeks to go now (need to start colouring, but I reckon I'm going to do the singing version instead, the sitting down pose it a bit overdone I reckon on this topic and I feel more inspired to do an 'action' pose)
Norris Welcome and thanks so much for your lovely comments. I'm chuffed you like the Wyrd Sisters, gonna get some commissions out the way and then finish it, thanks for the support
Gogogogogo Hello, thanks I enjoyed doing those studies, gonna do some more. And now you have sixteen snails called stephen? Cool!
Here's some more doodling I did at work, some from my brain and some copied, and some peeps from the WELL thread that I did with my new penI love it, it's so smooth!
