Another version with her arm down by her side...not sure which I prefer...
Started colouring her in...the arm on her hip looks a bit more balanced so I stayed with that one...
Here's my finished butcher for the stylized challenge...
played around with gaussian blur on photoshop, never really played with the effects much, but found some great tutorials online.there's www.onlyphotoshop.com which has very concise videos...

Bill - from Kill Bill
WIPS so far, I'm not sure I like his face at the moment so I'm going to have another go but his body is looking ok so far

A new face for Bill
Last edited by Angel Intheuk; January 22nd, 2009 at 08:41 AM.
Nah, new face was a bit wussy looking, didn't work. got pointed out to me that the first face was better, more shaded and dark looking so I decided to stick with that and ....
...HERE IS BILL FINISHED...
..I'm gonna change Uma now so that the style fits more with Bill (I guess that's what I'm mainly having to learn now anyway, choosing whether to go detailed or just sketchy

O Ren - First 2 sketches of her face, did the one on the right first and then narrowed down the right proportions for the one on the left...think I might make her eyes a little wider apart...
update on the WIP (for super-stylized - Jan) - was up til 2am - just couldn't leave it alone...am so tired now but I'm pleased with how it's coming along...
any suggestions? I know I have to make the barrel (for his hat) and the dustbin lids tied to his feet more obvious, just gonna find ref for that today and working on some small critters jumping out the way of his big foot to give him some size perspective...

Hi, Angela! Good work here! I love the caricatures. I see you did one of Sophia Loren. It's funny 'cause I just finished a portrait of her earlier today. Have you been to Drawingboard forums? I've a feeling you've been there before. Lots of amazing caricaturists over there.
I'd like to comment on your WIP. That's a difficult view of his foot there. I would use reference for that to get it correct. Also, since we're looking from below, I would probably foreshorten him further. The closest is his foot so that should be larger than other features like head, arms, etc which happen to be far away from us, and so should be smaller in comparison.
Although if I were to stick to the original view of big foot, I would probably do this:

Hey Angela, great to have you on board!
Nice sb, first of all. I'm no good at portraiture/caricature myself, so it would be nice to see your progression. You seem determined!
Some suggestions/ideas;
I think the fairy in post #11 really stands out by the way. There's some nice photoshop experimenting going on. Since you're also into watercolours, you could also scan some of that and use the textures in photoshop.
I'm also liking your pencil sketches, both on the this and the first page. I've noticed that O Ren has a very dynamic pose. Her expression is also very fitting for her character. If you're still planning on changing Uma or doing the rest of the crew, perhaps you should try the same for them. I think it would really add to the mood and character.
On your latest piece. I can only add that the composition seems very unbalanced. Both the hat and the big foot in front are very pronounced. They are sort of 'dragging' my eye to the left, since there is not much to see on the right.
I read you're attending an illustration class though, so perhaps you've heard all this already. I hope this was helpful, I'm not a pro myself.
Good luck, and looking forward to seeing your next update!

Wow cheers guysThat's really helpful, I'll definitely be following the advice:
Dizon - Yeah I need to get some reference for the pose really but you've given me alot to think about to make it look more balanced and the foreshortening to look more convincing...
Anthis - Yeah I love watercolour and was thinking of doing more textures on photoshop, that's a good place to start. I did study illustration about (gulp!) 10 years ago so I am really dusty now any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Cheers![]()
Some quick clothes sketches I did this morning from an msn article, up and coming stuff for 2009, as I'm broke as well it was nice to window shop at the same time
..only had a biro to hand though but had fun drawing with a pen, will try some more sometime...
20 minutes for all
a quick photoshop sketch - no ref - inspired by this morning's sketches
Hey thanks! really lovely caricatyres here! and nice sketchbook btw! Usually it takes about one hour to two hours with those speedpaints, depending on my mood and how far i want to take it
Hi angel
wonderfull sketchbook, i like your Lucy liu's caricature.
more pleazzzz
(and get ready for harsh critics)
Cheers muchly guys
Noodle: thanks I've enjoyed looking through your SB too, those environments are lovely, you've definitely inspired me to try and paint some things looser, I can really get bogged down with pictures and not know when to stop.
zou: Thank you very much, Im itching to get going on some more I'll try and update as much as I can along the way and as for harsh crits...excellent, I wouldn't have it any other way
Hai: Yeah I really do need to practice more with my tablet, thanks for the pull up![]()
Here's the Final for my entry to the Super Stylized challenge this month.
Cheers for all your help guys...it's been fun doing this one. Think I'll have a look at the Drawingboard thread next (thanks for the tip Dizon)
Nice! I like it! the hat is great, looks like banana peel or something! only thing that came to my mind is that he (it?) seems to be fallind backwards a little, maybe by changing the perspective of the wooden thing would make it better. Keep em coming!
Cheers Noodle!I think you're right on the boards, I'll have a go at them soon, I did rush a bit...was going to put some little critters as an audience and some movement lines as well but ran out of time so I'll do those and I'll keep em coming...
..did laugh at the banana peelsupposed to be a wooden bucket/barrel but my rendering isn't that good on photoshop. Will practice some textures I think as an exercise
funny character
a suggestion: change the background with a sky, like he's on a top of high tree ! it would be more funny
I really like your characitures (I can't spell that for the life of me). I had a lot of fun looking through them. Which I was scanning your sb and I was pleasantly surprised at this: http://conceptart.org/forums/attachm...1&d=1229203708 It's so different from your other stuff and it's lovely. Your other fairy is nice too but this one is a bit more delicate and I like it a lot.
"This planet has - or rather had - a problem, which was this: most of the people on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movements of small green pieces of paper, which is odd because on the whole it wasn't the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy." -Douglas Adams
My Sketchbook
My goal: To get good enough to post in the Finally Finished Forum.
MUCH better! I've got a better sense of the foreshortening. Although I still feel the head is still big. I also can't make out what it says behind him. Maybe if you can put that on top to balance the image because the top space feels empty. Also his left foot should be facing towards us, not twisted to the right. It makes sense if you're walking.
Anyway, good job! Now on to the next one.![]()
Hi Dizon...thanks very much ..the background is supposed to just suggest 'Talent Show' behind him, if I'd had more time I would have put more detail into it to make it more obvious (which I may do some time so I'll keep your suggestions in mind) I guess that's a huge lesson for me about doing more thumbnails at the beginning (lack of free time I guess) ..and yeah I noticed his head wasn't right but couldn't figure it out til the last minute and had to rush for the deadline so just left it as it is...doh! anyway, I was pleased with the result cheers...onto the next one Can hear the CHOW calling me this week!
