Deelock's Sketchbook (Huge update on last page! (NSFW)

Alright, it's about time i make a sketchbook...not that i have much to show for it, but i figure it'll help motivate me.

So i'm 19, a sophomore at Humboldt State University, and i'm studying art. I'm really ambitious about my future, I'm already doing some freelance design work and i want to eventually get into concept art and illustration. Looking at the competition, especially on this forum (the amount of talent is just amazing) gives me mixed feelings of inspiration, admiration, and fear.

I'd love critiques on anything and everything, I'll need all the help i can get to realize my goals.

    Thanks for visiting my sketchbook

I like the gesture studies and life drawings, they really do compare to alot of the good artists on the site. Let's see some stuff from your imagination. I can't really say much, as you have a leg up on me. Maybe you can help me out! Check out my Sketchbook, leave some suggestions. Thanks.

Random sketches from class and sketchbook doodles.

There are some studies from Bridgman, an oil still life (got more but not sure how to take good pictures of them), some life drawings, and the last page is imagined.

    Crits welcome!

Hey your doing the right kinds of studies, keep at those figures. Bridgman studies are looking good as well, but some of the hands look a little funny. Try some hands from life, a mirror helps to get some more dynamic positions. So yeah just keep it up and don't be a afraid to try new things

Nice figures, the arms seem a bit too short compared to their width, but it might just be me.
One thing about the digital paintings- Try get some textures in there. Right now they look plastic and fake. Just try out different brushes and techniques.
    Good luck!

Not alot to crit yet. Not perfect but underway and practising the right type of things.
In the first 2 pics the eyes are a weak area. The shading on the statue makes it look cross-eyed, and the girls eyes are probably just too high on her skull (most are closer to half way). This is making her seem abit cartoonish.
A couple of figures seem to have big heads too, but both these crits are just small nitpicks in an overall solid thread.
Just keep at it, and have some fun too. Look forward to seeing more.

Hi Dee, cool stuff in here,

Really digging the life drawings and strong studies.
But I thinks you should watch the proportions abit, some of the figures heads look a little to big, and you mite want to do some more hand studies aswell.

Good stuff so far, keep it comeing!

    thespianmonsalvo: Thanks, you got it.

    bigfooTrooper: Thank you

Pyroclasm00: Ah, my Achilles heel, hands. Yes i will do hand studies this weekend. Thanks for letting me know that i'm on the right track.

Fraz: I'm still really new to digital painting (and regular painting mind you) i'm on the search for a good textured brush set to use...pretty much stuck with the basic photoshop defaults right now. Thanks for the feedback.

SEVANS: I definitely have a lot to work on. I appreciate your feedback, and i hope to have some stuff for critiquing soon.

JailHouseRock: Heads are my favorite thing to draw so i could see why i would over accentuate them I'll look out for that in the future.

    Update!

First 4 are for my painting class at university, complementary color still lifes. (the photos are a bit blurry so i had to use the sharpen filter in photoshop... )

Does anyone know the proper way to take photos of paintings?

The busts are a bit of Avatar fan-art I love that show so much.

    And finally a Raphael study.

    As always, critiques are appreciated.

    Thanks!

Nice paintings!! I should really get off my lazy ass and wip out the paints, but alas.. haha.

Watch that last figure, he's getting kind of lumpy. And the far foot looks like it got run over with a truck.

Sublimus: You should! Now all i see in that drawing is that smushed foot.

Equality72521: I've got another one that's bigger and better but it's being hung up in my University art building. As soon as i get it back i'll photograph it.

    PieMonster: Thanks

You draw some fun faces I like them a lot.

The photoshop brush thing; you can just make your own! Crop some texture out of a paper scan, scribble on some black, mess with the contrast etc., the select the area and hit Edit > Define Brush. Then mess around with the spacing and other settings. I believe there's a tutorial on this very forum, too. I'll take a look...

Thanks for showing these great sketches.

    Edit: Brush thread: http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=104007
Making them; http://www.furiae.com/index.php?view=gallery click tutorials, then textured brushes

Great stuff here. I notice you're using Bridgman's Constructive Anatomy book... I have it too, but I guess I should do more studies out of it. Haha.
