    Dear Sheridan Animation / Illustration-ers:

I was just wondering what kind of summer jobs Animation/Illustration students pursue over the summer and where to go about finding them.

    For example,
I know it is common for animation students to do caricatures (at places like wonderland and what not) but other than that I dont know how to go about finding art-related jobs.

I am a first year animation student looking for summertime guidance.

    Thanks,
    nicole

I work at the old tim horton's on campus next to the a-wing on mondays from 3-10 and fridays from 3-7, if someone wants to drop by and be all like "CONCEPTART" to the lame looking guy with the glasses behind the register I would at least give them a high five, if nothing else.

    Teachers anybody?

hey guys! Congrats to all who gotten into sheridan for animation or illustration (i'm deeply jealous!) and since I discovered this forum lately, I'm a noob. but am very glad that everyone seems friendly and helpful! So I'm wondering if all who got into their desired program, did you guys have teachers? Or go to art fundies? My friend in Sheridan animation told me that art fundies this year is kind've useless (no offense), so I'm just wondering if everyone else that's not in art fundies, have some art teacher of some sort? Just curious since this is my second time applying (first time got rejected, really deserved it), but hopefully this year I'll get in, although I have no art teacher nor did I go to art fundies...so an answer would be appreciated =)
    Thank you!!
    I ramble. =3

hey, i had this issue back when i was in high school about people saying fundies was useless.. personally, it did wonders for me. part of the thing with fundies is now that you're in college, your teachers don't walk you through everything.. they tell you what you need to know and you need to start learning on your own.. that's what college does, it teaches you to teach yourself. most of the kids going into fundies are coming from high schools where they were one of the top art students.. and then you get all those kids together in one program and it's very humbling. some drop out from frustration that maybe art is not for them.. others, get inspired by the students around them, they grow so drastically in one year that they can't believe their work was considered good in the previous years.. there are a few teachers in that program generally know what it takes to get into illustration and animation.. as that is the majority's goal. if you do the work and you take advice, you will grow. depending on the level you're at now, it might be just the jolt you need, or you may need an extra year. having done the portfolio already, you should know what your score was, and then from that how close you were to getting in. in the two years that i applied, i observed a huge jump in the quality they were looking for. i almost got in with nothing that i put too much effort into (procrastinators never get anything done) slopped together the first time i applied, and the second time i put a good chunk into some of the pieces, i had a real sketchbook in there.. i used a variety of media, variety of techniques... and i gotta say, having my little sketchbook thread on here helped quite a bit.. i would really urge you to start one of those, no matter what your goal is.. there's quite a few of us on this thread that have our successful portfolios posted.. maybe they could throw us a line on here so you know where to look

    good luck

Yeah i'm in animation first year

As for art fundies it is extremely useful. It all depends on what u put in it. You get a lot of life drawing time which is crucial for almost all art programs u are applying for you get the basics of drawing. Not only that u are surrounded by people that have gotten in u are exposed to different styles everywhere. As for teachers if u ask any teacher in ur designated program of choice for help and feedback they are more than glad to help u out. Mine got critiqued by two of them and I'm better for it. If u haven had an art background like life drawing n such deffinately go for fundies.

Thank you for your answers and I will start my own thread (when i figure out how and steal somebody's scanner =3), so please feel free to see my possible submissions and critique the living crap out of it
Hopefully i'll get in this year because i'm getting old >.>
and does anyone know if it's possible to transfer into sheridan animation (though i highly doubt it, but just double checking)
and has anyone experienced switching schools not by transferring but by dropping out of one when you get accepted into a different program at a different school (which is basically my situation)
    Your answers are always appreciated!!
    and so are your critiques!

I'm going to take a tiny risk and try to make an animation portfolio on top of an illustration portfolio, not that anybody cares . I've been very impressed with the works animation graduates and students are dishing out.

I've been surfing many Sheridan animation portfolios which were put online and I only have one question regarding the requirements. For the storyboarding section, it asks me to "Choose one of the character designs provided and using the four-panel storyboard show the character as it goes through the following narrative". Where are the character designs provided?

I'd say fundies is hugely beneficial - having never been in it but seeing people who are from fundies in my class, there's definitely a gap between people who were in fundie and those straight out of highschool or elsewhere.

The gap is life drawing. Unless you pick it up fast, you'll be left clueless because it is assumed you've done a fair amount of it already.

When you go to art fundies, there'll be extra life drawing 4 days/week. This is HUGE and you'll not get that in any other school in Toronto as far as I know, and for sure not in Highschool.

So don't feel bad if you don't get in, fundies is a great introductory year where you can decide if this is for you. Can you sit and draw for 6 hours everyday? This is not something most people are sure about. If they answer yes and go to life drawing, they'll make a HUGE leap forward. If they slack around and just do the necessary amount of work, then they feel cheated that fundies didn't provide them with enough whatever.

As someone put it - illustration is character and environment design. Animation is largely character design and movement as well. So really, the opportunity of having a live professional model for you almost everyday - it's a no brainer, just go.

Im in 1st year illustration now and i thought i'd mention central technical schools art program as an alternative to art fundies. Its a highschool in toronto around bathurst and bloor and there specialized art program is amazing and fairly similar to what you'd learn in fundies. The kicker is.... its free. Its structured very similarly to the way classes here are so you have about 6 or 7 classes once a week for three hours each. these classes include life drawing, painting (from life) and sculpture (also from life). you can also drop in on other life drawing classes if you want more time in front of the model and theres extra life drawing once a week as well as extra figure sculpture. Like any school there are good teachers and bad teachers but the teachers for the classes that really matter (the ones mentioned above) are really great. I honestly cant say i have better drawing and painting teachers here than I had at central tech and I'm paying 7000+. In fact a good few of teachers here either went to central tech or have taught there like mark thurman (im sure all the animation students have good things to say about him) and alexashkas painting teacher bruce sherman. so anyway i would really really recommend checking it out, i think the work done at central tech is at the very least on par with whats done in art fundies and again its free.

The only down side to the school is that you cant get osap for it because technically your taking high school courses. but honestly if you live in toronto or you dont need osap i cant think of any reason to spend all that extra money to come out to boring oakville for a program you can basically get for free in awsome toronto.

one last thing, they have three programs: a one semester portfolio program, the 4 year highschool program and the 3 year adult program. I jumped into the 4th year of the highschool program as i had one more year of highschool to finish. I would recommend going for the adult program if you can or if your still in highschool go into year 4. I would not recommend the one semester portfolio program although that would seem the obvious choice. The thing is its run by a really unskilled fine art teacher and is very very conceptual. The other programs (especially the adult program) focus alot of foundations so in effect you'll get a better portfolio by taking anything but the portfolio course haha.

so heres the url: www.ctsartcentre.ca they have some work on there but really you gotta go to the place and see the work on the wall as much of the stuff on the site is outdated. didn't mean to write this much but i really wanted to share my experience and maybe stop some people from plunging into debt before there even start there 4 year program.

one more thing, this is the life drawing i had at central tech http://www.michaelgerry.ca/ . he teaches most of the drawing and painting classes and even if you dont get him you can drop in on his classes. I just noticed looking at this site that he actually taught life drawing in the illustration program here... probably explains why i feel so at home in life drawing class here.

Thanks for that, TristanR.. I wish I knew about that school when I was in high school YEARS ago.

On a completely different note.. I stumbled across this a few days ago.. I'm really into books, and I'm pretty pumped that this one might end up under my Christmas tree this year..

p.s. I'm not an Illustration snob.. I think everyone can benefit and become inspired from looking at others' sketchbooks and drawings.. hence why we have such a WICKED sketch thread on this site.

I wish I knew of the school Tristan mentioned also.

I'm currently in 2nd year Interpretive Illustration. I went the Fundies route after highschool because I didn't get into Animation. Anyway, Fundies is really what you make of it, any art program is. If you aren't willing to push yourself further than the required workload, then it's going to be pretty useless. I recommend going to life drawing as much as you can. When I was in fundies, I remember having a pretty lax workload, especially when compared to the workload in Illustration. There's definately enough time to attend those extra life drawing sessions. Push yourself and you'll benefit from it.

Damn, I'd like to meet you. I think I've seen you around because I've seen previous drink n' draw photos here and recognized you, but I was never 100% sure. :/

I've only spoken to a few of the CA people. I've met SirGreenSock (Nic) and Tristan...that's pretty much it. I see Tristan pretty much every day in extra life but have a hard time even initiating convos with people, and he doesn't answer me on facebook...HE'S A BASTARD, EVERYONE HATE HIM lol jk man, he's really nice actually.

I see many around though, I'm just kinda shy, though trying to break that. For example I've seen Braden a handful of times. I've seen Ryn too, I see her a lot actually, though have never spoken to her. I feel stupid for that. Hmmm, who else. Well I know Bradens friend John because we were in fundies together...annnnd kenny I've seen, as well as nor. Yeah I really need to talk more. Wow.

EDIT: Waaaait, algebra, are you Kevin?? I'm Gareth if you are, the one you played soccer with. If you're like "what the hell are you taking about" then sorry in advance lol.

haha.. funny stuff. greensock's the best.. and yeah, i went to a few of the drink and draws when they first began two years ago. maybe i'll end up in your class in january, i'm gonna be up to 5 classes then; right now there's not much opportunity for socializing, life drawing is not very conducive to that.. but a few people have made an effort to make me feel kinda sorta comfortable.. they're all probably sitting there like, why the hell is that girl here?

Hahaha holy shit, yeah, I am that Kevin. Weirddddddd. I see you all the time haha.

I haven't really met anyone besides you I guess. I saw sirgreensock in the hall once and was like "holy shit I recognize that guy from his self portraits" and I got a little weirded out, so that doesn't really count haha.

That is weird, haha. I see you around a lot too, actually.

Anyway, if any CAers are curious as to who I am, I'm usually wearing a backwards Aeropostale hat and a lock necklace.

Anyhow, back to my narrative illustrations, yay crunch time!

    Dahahaha! That's funny.

I am always reluctant to bug you because you get into your art and stuff with VICIOUS INTENSITY.

Ill make a point to say hi next time I see you around. I practically live in a130 these days so it's bound to happen, hohoho :3

Haha, really? I've been told I have an aura of looking pissed off a lot, but if that's the case, it's usually because I want to talk and have a hard time being the first to do so, so my conflicting emotions...well you get the idea, HOW INTENSE. (I've just realized you used the word intense to describe it also, so I guess it must look that way..haha)

Anyway, yeah, please bug me. I'll make a point to say hi to you, too. Seriously, It's really stupid that I haven't yet.

hey i'm usually a non poster on CA but it was too great/weird to see the internet and real life collide

I'm also a first year illustration student at sheridan. Gareth I'm pretty certain I recognize who you are from extra life. I know Tristan from class and I'm usually chatting with him during breaks whenever I'm there. I've been a little lax on the extra life during the past few weeks thanks to some assignments but hopefully I'll get in the habit again. But yea if we're there talking during the breaks though, just come on over. : )

I think alexashkas is..the Alex i'm thinking of and know. yes? haha
This is Jon by the way.
