Hello! Thanks for stopping by.
I'm with the rest of the Guildhall flood.
We're working on a lab portrait, trying to copy a picture of a head/face as precisely as possible.
Comments, critiques, and draw-overs welcome! This is a project I'll be doing till October 7th for my drawing class in school (Guildhall at SMU). I’m working on my first major ‘practice’ piece in digital painting using Photoshop. The basic rule of the assignment is to paint the picture to a photo real state only using the eye dropper tool to get color picks.
Current Progress:
Pencils - Partly done. I messed up the original layer accidentally. I'll do it over and post again within the week.
Values - Also partly done. I just jumped the pencils and started painting to catch up with the class. Also planning on finishing within the week.
And here's the head.

A friend of mine went up to me and asked me to create a character for his friend's new comic. So I drew up and painted the Pigman. References taken from half a dozen random images, mainly of KMFDM and Pig's rockin' guitarist, Steve White.
It wasn't until I was completely done when I realized that there's already a famous pink-clad, blood-soaked, fursuit monster out there. I guess I'll make revisions of Pigman later. I'm thinking maybe a filthy dude that carries around a potbelly pig underneath each arm.
About an extra 2 hours and 30 minutes of tweaking. I hid that nasty line layer and messed with the eyes, nose, and cheek. Currently having a lot of trouble with the pores, so I'll hit the tutorials this weekend and hopefully figure it out.
It's October 6th, the day before Samuel L. Jackson's head is due, and my sanity is gone from other projects. Sadly, I probably won't finish this thing to completion before it's due, but I'm hoping to at least realize the face, smooth out obvious brushes, and render the rest of the image in a way that makes the picture look complete. Here's my progress thus far. Any comments on particular things I should work on are greatly appreciated.

I didn't get to complete it anywhere near as much as I would have liked, but here's the version I turned in to class.

that painting is *awesome*
lovely jubbly!
Thanks, MikeyH!
Here's some observational stuff I did today.
The outside picture took about 2 hours, and was really a challenge since my distant vision is blurry and terrible (even with glasses) and the lighting kept changing. It went from full sunlight, to a gorgeous sunset, to almost complete darkness, to a sudden illumination from half a dozen little spotlights. I kept adding layers to adjust with the current lighting until I got sick of it, and just took off.
The inside picture took about 1 hour. I limited my time there so I wouldn't spend all my money buying tasty drinks.
Maybe I should have made these rectangular canvases, since the composition of square images is a challenge to work with. Looking back at it, the outside picture would be much stronger as a rectangle. As it is right now, it just seems so incomplete.

For class, a 30-minute character sketch without reference. Naturally, afterwards, I came back and touched her up. So I guess it's a 60-minute character sketch. I made stray hairs stick out of the hat thing, fixed the hands, and added frills to the jacket. I just wish I wasn't stupid and didn't delete the original layer by accident. It would've been nice to compare sketches.
far out the portrait is amazing. keep posting i want to see the finished product.
the pulp fiction guy s very nice
Good job with the area around the eyes on the portrait. I looks *very* realistic.
Question is though, in the last one that you posted, why are there stray hairs coming out of her hat? Does she have extremely poofy hair that somehow sticks its way through the hat? Does she wear the hat all the time so that she sheds on it and therefore there are strands of hair sticking to it?

Oh, baby, haven't been here in a while. I gotta dig up some stuff and start posting again.
It took a few months for a response, but I tried to draw a disoriented, disheveled, depressed chick. The stray hairs are partly there because she shoved all of her long hair in the beanie/hat, and partly because the beanie was loosely knit. In my head, I imagined her wearing the hat all the time, at least long enough for hairs to start poking out.
Here's a painting study that I spent way too much time on. (My duplication is the larger one.) I'm not sure of the original artist as this was a class assignment, although it might be James Hawkins. If anyone knows for sure, lemme know.

It's been a while! Here's some stuff I've done since my last post. These are from 2009:
A couple of things from 2010 and early 2011:
(Note: The animu stuff and red leg isn't mine. Maybe I should've cropped it out of the pic. TOO LATE!)
And a flood of stuff from 2011:
Back in October of 2011, I did a mail art project for fun. I created a bunch of postcards by hand and sent them out all over the world. It took way longer than I predicted, but it was so worth it. The scanned postcard was sent to me by one of the recipients.

And finally, stuff from 2012:
Some more stuff from the past few days.
A self-portrait done with a mirror and a study I attempted without sketching first. (SPOILER: I'm never skipping the drawing phase again.)

A couple more studies. The scenes were taken from TV shows and I spent about an hour on each.
Some sketches. The first from photo reference. The others are still life and people in Taco Bell.

Last week, I submitted this piece for Les RAV's album art contest. And I won! Still can't believe my art's going to be on the first album cover of a kickass band.
Some studies from a couple of months ago.
Life drawing from late May/June/super early July 2012. Taken with lol-stagram filters.
The pages with eyeballs on them were done from photographs.
And a live model oil painting from last Thursday. Two hour pose.
Been using a lot of charcoal lately and slowly not hating it. It's also much easier to photograph than graphite, so I will push myself out of my comfort zone and keep using it. These are from last night.
