    First Fresh Page of 2012

Rollingman - Appreciate it! But I was disappointed to find that your sketchbook hasn't been updated? We know you have stuff to post.

    Right, ...::: Fresh Page :::....

That last page spanned across a 2 year time period, so I've brought forward a couple of images from the end of that page.
YEAH DOUBLE POSTING INORITE. Just as a point of reference without having to trawl through all my old bullshit.

Started studying Andrew Loomis recently, for the first time. So I guess that makes for good fresh page material too.

Just a study of the male proportions from Loomis. All this stuff seems so basic and essential - yet not once through school, art college or university did we get taught or directed towards learning basic anatomy.

Yeah I overstated the torso width by accident and scaled it back in photoshop, hence the fudge marks.

    I'm enjoying this Loomis learning.

Dude, I really love that last batch of portraits that you did! One little thing that I noticed is that when you draw the face in 3/4 view, the far away eye tends to slide up and down beyond where it should be so that's something to watch out for. Also came to say that I answered your question about that constructional drawing dude on my sketchbook. Not sure how informative the answer will be due to may faulty memory, though.

Stay cool. Loomis is a really, really good writer and teacher imo.

snacks ex machina - Hey man! Cheers. Yeah I'll definitely start paying proper attention to those slidey far side eyes. This construction stuff should help force me out of that habit too.

    On my agenda atm:

    - Loomis' Figure Drawing
    - Sculpting a zbrush bust.

The bust will be to help push the head stuff I've been doing recently. Practice construction, working in the muscle, etc.

Over the weekend though, I felt like rendering a head, so here you go.

Thanks Burl! I'm definitely feeling more comfortable with it, each time more and more so. Faster too.

Mostly been doing 3D stuff if anything recently (like the zbrush bust I said I was going to do), which I'll upload soon. Haven't had as much spare time as I would have liked.

Eyes. Failing to get eyes in the right position / size / angle. This is a problem for me that I need to fix.

Think I'll go back and see what Loomis has to say about that. If anyone knows of any good eye-related resources, feel free to spam them here.

hmm no, her eyes aren't drawn equal. Same for the mouth. Ofcourse nobody's face is perfect. I like how you did the hair.

Also a sculpt WIP that I said I started. Haven't touched it for months, I kind of forgot about it.
Decided I wanted to step back, go and learn the head in general a bit better, then return with a better understanding.

Will definitely be coming back to fix it / continue along with it though.

Need some proper eyeballs when I come back to it.

Finally started doing some non-ref stuff. Yeah they start a bit shit, but serves me right for not practicing sooner.

But Maya crashed, so fuck it. You don't get to see that. Just evidence of intention.

And I'll throw a study in for kicks.

Skulls. Because anatomy is important and I need to learn it.
I'm pretty much mixing it up with Loomis, Michael Hampton and David K Rubins.
Reading atm, so expect to see studies soon.

Was reading through the gestures and landmarks sections of Michael Hampton's book last night.

Quick gesture poses I find pretty tricky. I'm not great at conducting poses in my mind, particularly a variety of them in rapid succession.
Enjoy landmarks though, learning and beginning to practicing them. Scrawling all over scrap paper at work.

Using fine liner pens feels pretty healthy. I'm using an A4 sketchbook at home for going nuts in (as above).
Then my moleskine will probably be used for demonstrating what I've learnt afterwards. Whatever method makes me draw more.

RyanRyan - Thanks man! Nice to hear you're in the anatomy boat too. I'll come check your thread.

Just some scrawling from this evening. These feel really quick to throw together.
Getting more comfortable. Working my way down the body. Still on upper torso atm.
