    Royzy's Sketchbook | [Updated May 3rd]

Visit the most recent page for a better idea of where I am at. Big time gaps through out these pages...

    .................................................. .............................................

    September 21st 2008

Hi everyone, my name is Roy Nottage and I am about to start University. My main areas of interest in the big world of art and design are Digital Animation, Digital Painting and Web Design.

I'm not going to pretend I will update this every day, but I will make damn sure to update as often as possible. I have stuff in the works, and will have lots of enthusiasm when I get my graphics tablet in the post on Tuesday (can't wait).

Attached below is my first digital painting, which I started before the summer. It took me about 10 hours (probably a bit more) and is from reference.

<<IMAGE HAS BEEN MOVED TO SECOND POST>>

Something I just couldn't get the hang of was hair. HAIR. If anybody knows of any good links to tutorials on doing hair, I would be really grateful!

Did you do that with a MOUSE!? I thought it was impressive before I read that! But that piece is gorgeous. I look forward to seeing more. I'm not a pro painter or anything, but it seems like hair takes a ridiculous amount of patience, practice, and learning how to use different brushes helps too.

Quick Edit-- the hair on the pic seems far more defined at the top left of the face, then gets a bit fuzzy toward the bottom, which seems to contrast with the precision and clarity in the facial features. (Also, the eyes and lips are _gorgeous_)
Crits, Advice, and Feedback always appreciated.

Thanks for the quick feedback and kind words Djinn! Yeh it was with a mouse (and my finger constantly on CTRL-Z), though I got a graphics tablet today and have been trying to get used to it for the last few hours.

Below is something I have started, but with the opposite approach to brushes. I have only used hard brushes for this (since the last one was too soft and I want to find a happy medium). It is partial reference, and I have started to use my Tablet on it now instead of Mr. Mousey.

Thank you Lone Wolf, and I certainly will be. It's so easy to get inspiration when I come on ConceptArt.org, it is just what I was looking for to get motivated.

Just a few bits, a couple of quick life drawing sketches and an early work in progress.

Archery, Fencing and a female collection, respectively.

And an early wip (and my second digital painting from reference) of my girlfriend below. She is looking a bit burnt and scarred (as I mentioned on my blog, link in the signature, wink wink, nudge nudge...).

You know what, I don't actaully know.

The original image didn't have a name, but I just searched that name, and I think you could be right!

It's nice to put a name to the face. Thanks for that.

I may use her as reference again, though hopefully as a 'stylised' image, not directly from reference (though I did find a great image where she looks like Rikku from Final Fantasy X). I am using photos as reference to practice my painting skills, but I really need to start drawing some stuff. I have ideas, but I'm not confident enough about my drawing skills yet.

Here is a quick update on my second painting, just so everyone knows I'm at least doing something.

If anyone knows of good ways to practice, I would love to hear them.

Some Old Stuff! woo, everybody likes old stuff.

I suppose I should upload some old sketchbook stuff, before it gets too old. This is pretty much all stuff from last year, just some grabs from a few pages.

My Big Christmas Draw: So far; so far behind.

My Big Christmas Draw is basically to draw a person every day through my Christmas Break. If I can't do a day, I'll catch up another day. Ultimately I just need to have 31 drawings by January 12th. So far I have 5, with 2 on the way. So almost 7 out of 16. Oh dear. Going to be a busy January 11th.

One I have just finished. The first proper go at shading I've had, bit weak in some areas, but I'll just have to practice!

Some nice work! That 1st piece you posted has great lips! Cool figure studies. Try think about the 3d from of the figure a bit more, at the moment it seems like you are trying to just lay down the right values as you see then instead of building form. Also a lot of your hatching is at the same angle, try make marks that would follow and suggest form! Keep up the good work and dont be afraid to do those faces, we all need to push ourselves in the place we arent comfortable!

Thank you for those tips, they make a lot of sense and I probably wouldn't of realised without them. I guess just putting down the values is not going to give an image 'life', and give it life is what is what I need to.

And you also exploited my fear of adding the face...I knew someone would mention that pretty quick. I think I will do some studies of quick faces in my sketchbook to get a bit more confident.

Your last pic is defiantly an improvement on your other drawings,
You should hit up some loomis/bridgman studies with your tonal drawings, it really helps you improve, I made the mistake of just mindlessly copying photos and not paying attention to form.
    Keep at it man

    Currently looking for work!

Hy good stuff, but be carefull, in the last post, the first one is really flawed in the hips (going towards deform).
To avoid this I would start drawing form the mind, and after I've grasped some good understanding of the structure I would then go up to the references. Vilppu used to say "don't copy the model, analyze it", and it's a rather good tip.
    Minor stuff with the others.

Thanks for the hands on feedback lennon!

As I began to finish drawing that one ^ I did wonder about the possible deformality. When you concentrate on something for a length of time, things tend to slip by I find, and I didn't take a step back and look at it with fresh eyes.

Your interpretation of it is definitely feels more natural looking against the other parts I had drawn.

Nice studies, although you tend to draw the legs too short, and the upper bodies look a tad too long because of that ;D

But overall, nice progress! Keep it up

Yeah, I can see is a tough one. Perhaps the ass should be looking more towards the front, and yet it's still too much to the left; but I can see what you mean.

Thanks Fshoo, and yep, they can look a bit dwarfed! My life model looked a bit concerned about them too when I drew them.

Proportion is definitely something I'm trying to improve.

wow good work going on here!
About how-to-paint-hair tutorials, I suggest you to have a look at Linda Bergkvist website (furiae.com). She is an amazing digital painter and has some really useful and good explained tutorials about hair, skins, eyes and such.
    Good luck
    I have a sketchbook!
