    matte painting - The octopus

Initially I wanted to make a more complex and complicate matte painting than I have done so far. I exaggerated a little the difficultness and at the beginning I said to myself that it was a hard challenge to put an octopus in it. For the octopus I found approximately 40 photographs and then I chose among them. All the tentacles and the head are from different octopuses.

I think the laws of physics have something to say about the possibility of an octopus attaining that size--the whole surface area to volume ratio thing, and all that stuff. Also, I wouldn't want to live in that little village on the cliff, as it looks like it will probably crash into the sea the next time there's an earthquake. Apart from those observations, however, it is a beautiful painting. Clouds, light rays, water, textures, colors... all beautifully rendered.

Yeah totally and also what about all those dragon paintings I've seen recently here on ca.org, so totally unrealistic!

And elves, I mean, wtf, man! They couldn't have ears that big or they would lose all their [i]body heat![/i

    [/sarcasm]

    Very nice painting!

love it! the only thing I am disagreeing somewhat with is how the octopus gets his head so high above the surface. but that's just small, silly details. speaking of details: I love the amount of them you have here. I like the closeup of the city, especially.

hearing such a comment in CA.org is kinda weird, imo. :/

i love octopus!!!! just had one yesterday, fried hehe
seriously, i like the picture! Good atmosphere and colors! Also like the town!
the dark trees in the foreground are a bit disconnected but other than that its good.

Its just not a matte painting, matte paintings are usually backdrops for movies and they not suppose to contain falling leaves and other moving objects if u know what i mean.

    cheers

this should be said often before....I mean, what sense has conceptart itself when it is used on unrealistic things in the first view.
BUT I think, especially in this case the overrated dimensions giving the voltage to the painting.a little octopussy as big as a hot dog or a even a car after accident on stabile coast lines protected by some nerdy fisherman police guy or sumwhat is not epic in any way,not even if it is rendered as tight as this piece.

(can anyone tell me if I use that term voltage the right way?)

I think you could work on the rendering of the octopus, but anyways, what an intriguing piece! I got sucked into the story and mood of the thing. Good job!

i mean matte painting - is it made from photos, leaves .. they are here only for atmosphere in this case for wind

    thanks all for comments!

"Angroc -->the only thing I am disagreeing somewhat with is how the octopus gets his head so high above the surface." - yes i thinking about it, but big head of octopus blow up the "bad" atmosphere and fill right side of the picture

Dahami: I'm not seeing any laws of physics being broken here. True most crustaceans don't get this big, and am I wrong but the freaking Kraken in Pirates of the Caribbean was just as huge. I don't remember anyone mentioning physics there. The thing that's great about this is that it's incredibly fantasy and out there. The fact that the octopus is that size is what makes this piece what it is. Also, the city is a wonderful addition, and is very in place for solidifying this and a fantasy piece and nothing else. Woot.

fughi from yuggoth: No I don't think you used voltage correctly. I think you are looking for the word "impact". But still, you're comment is all over the place (nerdy fisherman police guy, say what???). I think you're saying that concept art shouldn't be used on anything that's not realistic. I may be wrong, but that's what I'm reading. If that's not what you're saying, please enlighten me.

All in all, MVOCET beautiful work and well done. You are correct in calling this a matte painting. Matte Painter, Alp Altiner, uses photos in all of his concept paintings and matte paintings. Yes traditionally matte paintings are backgrounds in movies but they are not just limited to solely that. Your image could easily be broken up into foreground, midground and background and animated for a shot in a movie. So again, well done and good work.
