Hi, My name is Massih and I have been browsing CA for some time now and I finally decided to create a sketchbook. Greatly inspired by the MindCandyMan thread and also Seedling´s painting a day thread and ofcourse all other artists on CA.

I´m currently studing art for a year and I really want to improve my painting and drawing. Please critique and be as brutal as you want as long as it´s constructive

Starting this of with some selected pages from the sketchbook and after this post i will scan everything I do.

We are currently doing life drawing in class and I will hopefully scan those paintings and drawings, in the next couple of days. Otherwise i´ve been doing studies from Bridgman´s constructive anatomy and 30s drawings from posemaniacs.com a lot lately.

Enough talking, the drawings:

Todays upadate:

An oil painting I did the other day,
some color exercises and an acrylic study,
some selfportraits in markers and ink,
some life drawings,
sketches of classmates and a tree,
sketches of my hand and paintings in acrylic of the model.

The last painting is a wip and will be finished tomarrow, the red lines are corrections made after talking to the teacher.

I'd really adoring your pen drawings. You've got a lovely graphic style with them, reminiscent of some graffiti I found in a book called Graffiti Brasil. REALLY yummy stuff!

And now some updates:

Some sketching, posemaniacs, bridgman "drawing the draped figure", an acrylic painting that i´m not happy with, some life drawing of model.
An intensity asignment that I haven´t finished yet. Pretty nice to desaturate it in Photo Shop to see where i´m totally off.

Another oil painting that´I stressed through and it didn´t turn out the way I wanted it too. Getting the colors right is a huge problem for me.
And last the finished painting of the model and a value study.

awesome styling but try not to let it uproot the fundamentals behind your art but i like the clean lines and the recent paintings look nice maybe a little to saturated, try building the tones rather than having it be too strong first time through

I like your sculptor's approach to rendering the form. It's nice, solid, and has great weight and dimension to it. What amazes me is this even carries over into your quicker sketches - even when it looks like you have less time and need to be economical with lines, you place the right ones in the right places to ground the figure. Pretty rad.

Update:

Some oil studies I did this august. I just wanted to show the ones I was most satisfied with (as this was before starting the sketchbook ) Hope to get some critique on those, colors are hard.

Some more bridgman studies drom "drawing the draped figure", and studies from life. And lastly a sketch of something I think I will use for a project at school, I will update with the finished line drawing.

I didn´t have time to draw this weekend and have been a bit lazy otherwise, but I will change that.

Update:

Todays croquis session (2 - 2.5, 5, 10 and 20 minutes) and the finished line drawing. We are putting together a coloring book at school so the picture is done but I might color it anyway for fun.

We were in town today sketching people and their relationships to eachother, objects and space. We also had another croquis session today (30s, 1 min, 2 min, 5 min and 10 min).

I did the old lady for the DSG.

Seriously those lines are just sexy, can't get enough of em!
And nice Bionic Old lady you have there, but I'm pretty sure you can do better than that. The back ground and the lady seems not to contrast enough, but I believe its just a quickie work in progress.

Alm0st: Thanks man! Yeah you are definantly right about that, I kind of rushed the old lady and I can do better. The reason for that is probably cause i´m not at all comfortable with colors, they are giving me a hard time. I don´t think i´ll be working on that one anymore as it was just a sketch for the DSG but next time I will put more time into my image.

Please remember to be brutal with critiques if you think something is wrong or needs to be worked on more, well anything. I really want to improve and that´s the reason i´m uploading everything I do and i´m going to work hard to achieve this.

Right now i´m tring to understand color and value better but it´s very hard, I need to do more studies and I am probably going to try and find a mentor (on CA). I need to put more time into my images as well, often I rush them. That´s also one of many things I really need to work on.

Not very much done today, but at least I finished the line drawing I had done some time ago.

Nice hand studies, looks like baby hands though, no offense meant if they were self studies.
As for the vectorized comic, the background to me seems like a source of light, lighting from bottom right to top left. But on the figures the lighting is coming from the top left. Just thought I'd mention it since it threw me off a little.
keep up the color studies though! I know i definitely need to also.

Ha ha, yeah those are self studies, I guess some of them are a bit too chubby and small but yeah, I have small hands

Yep, I will do more color studies, sure need to do them.

We started drawing giant self-portraits today, will probably finish it tomarrow.
Not much else done today, but anyway:

btw are your self portraits realistically approached or stylized?
and is that charcoal pencil?
man, that's a lot of questions...

Alm0st: Yup, that´s a ninja turtle Well some are stylized, for example the last one done with a pen and the one made in markers. The charcoals are realistically approached. Charcoal was very hard and there are many mistakes in the self portraits, but I will keep practicing.

Yeah, I used a piece of charcoal.

Update:

Today we made comics/storyboards. In the first one we were supposed to pick a film, and illustrate the story in 16 images.
In the second one we were given a story, mine was: "child watches tv, tv falls on him".

We also painted today and I will take a photo of that tomarrow.

We continued working with comics and this time we illustrated someone elses story. It was very fun. I also included some progress.

Great, loose style. Good to see that you're also doing lots of constructive studies to back that up. I see improvement in the volume of the figure drawings, so keep pushing that. They're becoming much fuller forms, more 3D, and that looks great. I think you might like Peter Hannan, the guy who made Catdog. Your cartoons reminded me of his sketchbook section. Maybe Egon Schiele too.

Yeah I try to do a lot of studies. I´m glad you see improvement, feels nice I will keep pushing it. I really like those Peter Hannan cartoons, thanks for the inspiration. The eyeball man going down the hill is great

Not much done today, i´m a bit tired. We´re sculpting during school hours.
