I think you need to push your values more in your pencil drawings. Your face study is the best for this, but compare the darkest darks with your pen drawing and you'll see what I'm talking about. What leads are you using?

I thought so, buy some softer pencils/leads and you'll notice a difference right away, its good to have a nice range. Softer leads scratch/dent the paper less too. Do you have a tablet?

I don't yet but will soon. It's on my "college supply list" if you will. I can't wait to play with it.. i've heard that they are much fun but then again i love to do things with material mediums.

(edit) i played with it a bit after the comments.. i'm not quite satisfied with it yet but figured i would post my progress anyhow "]

You should really push your values in the pencil drawings.

Yes i do agree. "Man made god" said the same thing and one of the reasons it was difficult for me to, was it was all done in a standard #2 because that was all that i had available at the time "/ silly me.

hey man, liking your pencil portraits, they're also what I love to do, I think we're around the same age, I'm liking your technique but maybe you could try out using a couple of different tones, maybe 3, 4b/2b/F? and maybe keeping the pencil sharp, seems you're letting it go a bit blunt..

great work tho, keep it up!!!

All comments/criticisms will be returned, thanks.

You're very right i do tend to let it get a little blunt every now and then especially in the larger areas. And i do use different tones its just that i cant seem to get very good scan quality "[ Thanks for the tips!

    Hey

I had to check out your book cause I love me some pencil portraits of models. I like the first one (Kate Moss right?) A few things you may want to measure is the right eye looks a bit too wide or just really angular. Also, to really finish that drawing you should keep detailing the hair. At that point I'm always like so over it and don't want to do hours of hair so I know how that feels haha.

I think what people are saying about values is true, but this can be solved by picking a reference with really dynamic lighting. Fashion photography is amazing for this so I'm sure you can find a really great pic.

Time to get back to work on my Rosie Huntington-Whiteley painting

    Daily updates? Nice

Your values are much better now. I'd say your weakest point now is your edges and value blending, but if you keep doing the daily studies then you've got nothing to worry about.

It looks fairly accurate in terms of proportions, my biggest issue is your use of line weights. Some of your lines are just too thick, and are giving it a very 2 dimensional look. It looks sort of in between styles, some parts are rendered realistically, and some are more stylized because of the exaggerated line weights, which are nice on their own but still not good for the realism. Some parts could also use some darker values amd more definition, but you already noticed that.

Overall, it is an improvement from your earlier drawings, so keep pushing, this thread needs updates!

These are just a couple things that I have done for school recently... they aren't the best quality only because I have been forced to use microsoft paint for lack of better software "[ I will be getting some upgrades soon though "]

The first is an advertisement for a fictional Truck or SUV.

The second is an ad for a new woman's shampoo called "head case" (also fictional)

I'm an author who has been looking for this exact style of "calligraphy pen art" as I'd call it for the cover of my book. If you'd be interested in doing some work with me please contact me. Thanks.
