The way the school tells you to. It should be on their submissions page.

Usually that will be CD, DVD, slides or print. It should not be originals.

I'm hoping you will be present with said originals? Or else they have a foolproof way of returning them?

Nope, he's right. CalArts wants originals in a mail-in portfolio. Kind of intense.

I dont think I'm going to get the originals back. I'm cool with that as long as it gets me into college.

If that were the case, you should certainly make copies--or what will you do if you don't get into this one school?

I'm looking at the CalArts page for School of Arts and it gives many ways to send a portfolio and states "Do not send original work." It says they prefer online submissions. Am I looking at the wrong school or department?

    From the CalArts submissions page:

"We recommend using the online portfolio system to upload your portfolio with digital files. The system allows you to create a corresponding inventory of works, listing for each image the following information: title, date, medium, dimensions and notes. It is also possible to upload video works.
Please go to the online portfolio submission site at www.calarts.slideroom.com to submit your work. Once your portfolio is uploaded, it can be viewed and rearranged until the final submission is made. No changes can be made following the final submission of your portfolio. Be sure to submit your portfolio to the correct degree level and program. If you experience technical difficulties while uploading your portfolio, you may send an e-mail to [email protected] for technical support."

For character animation it says this on their site

"Original work is preferred, not photocopies or photos of your work. Do not send traced pictures or copies of work by others. You may include slides of artwork, such as large drawings, paintings, sculptures, etc., that will not fit into a flat portfolio. Original drawings must be sent in a flat portfolio arrangement. Do not send drawings in poster or mailing tubes."

I guess slides would be the best option unless that info is outdated. Again this is specifically for character animation so not sure.

I've said before that I disagree with that requirement and everywhere else on their site says to the contrary of sending originals. I'm confused: How would copies be any different to assess than originals...especially in character design (where it's not as important that the colors be exact, as say...product design)?

Um, why wouldn't you make slides or CDs of the work BEFORE you sent it all with no promise of ever seeing it again?
