Hello, all!

I'm new to CA and plenty intimidated. I thought a good place to start would be a sketchbook. It's nothing very exciting, just anatomy drills and observation training.

I really want to take my art to the next level, so I'm not afraid of critique. Just art god thunderbolts, I guess. There are plenty of them on here!

I'm interested in illustration and digital painting, so all tips are appreciated. That and, being an utter n00b, tips on where to go for said interests.

Hello Droemar,

You're off to a great start. There really is some exciting stuff here. You may not see it now, but trust me these foundational drawings are extremely important. If you don't know what makes something why it is, it's very difficult to draw it the way you envision.

I'm working on the figure in a similar way. Learning the absolute basics of each part and its relation to the whole. I don't have any experience drawing horses, as my primary subject is the human figure. However, I would suggest continuing your studies as you've been doing, and add to them your own forumulas.

For example, the human body is, on average, 8 heads long, with the head positioned on top, the nipples on the bottom line of the second section, the belly button on the line of the third section, and the crotch resting on the line of the fourth section and so on. What are the formulas for the horse? How many lenghts is the average horse? How far from the top of the head are their eyes, nostrils, cheek bones, etc?

Essentially, what are the dimensions that make up a horse? I'm working with a dvd series called "the structure of man." I've heard some say it's too technical for them, but I love it because being able to have something broken down to its essential building blocks and putting it back together again really helps me see and understand more completely what it is I'm drawing.

I'd be happy to help you with this if you like. I also recommend stock piling books and browsing the web for free tutorials on Google, You Tube, etc. There are many magazines that may be helpful as well. Taking your own pictures would also help, and, if possible, getting up close and personal to your subject. Draw horses from life.

Welcome! More Art! More Art! Let's see more horse drawings. Got any digital paintings of horses!?! Those anatomy studies look stellar. Some of them look a little rough but you've really captured the form, which is an awesome way to start. Don't worry about the details too much just yet, that'll come with practice.

The horses are great, such an interesting animal to paint. I'd love to do some studies later, but it's incredibly complex!

Good stuff with the horse studies, the only problem area seems to be your hindquarters - they look a bit underdeveloped or 'weedy'. Remember how much power is in those things -
