    Elephant

Hi, this is the first drawing I have posted here and I just wanted to get some feedback. My name is Drew and I'm 14 years old. I worked on this for about 2-3 hours total. Sorry for the image quality, it was taken on my cell phone. I'm already going to redo what's done on the ear. Hope you like it

Hello! great drawing in my opinion, it seems that the proportions are good,
even tough i dont have your reference photo xD
The shading is really good! it would cool to kinda let the ears fade away,
not really fade by 100% to 0% but like the right ear (my right) but a little more shadow,

    Great drawing!

    Very nice!!!
I think it would be good to darken the darks a little bit more.

As an elephant he looks convincing. Good job so far.

But what you really should be doing is learning how to do that without a photo

technically speaking i've always been advised to build up your values as "one big picture." It really helps to define your value relationships- say you went too dark in one area and now you can't go darker in a spot that needs it for proper rendering or just simply a value jump to spark interest in the composition.

I'd say your rendering starts out a little too specific. First try defining where your shadow and where your light is- two tones. Then branch out from more general to more specific shapes and values. You might find that after this is done enough times your values optically blend and you no longer feel the need to blend them- this keeps contrast in the image up as everything doesn't blend together and gives the viewer a proper read.

As far as "finding out how to do that without a photo" - well, that's what you're doing by looking at a photo. Every study will help you further your knowledge of the behavior of light. Great artists still use references.
