Tips on emulating watercolor splotchy look?

    Hi everyone,

I'm interested in recreating a particular watercolor effect in Painter X:

(It's a painting by the legendary Sergio Toppi. )

I know how to get the salt effect, but not the 'splotchyness' like that in the background of the above image, the 'wet fringe' look. I've tried out every brush in the Watercolor category and couldn't get anything close to it.

Any help is highly appreciated. Thanks!

I used the Digital Watercolors engine, it's hard to explain how I did that it's best to just mess with Painter and try to create your own brushes, I made this with my brushes that I posted before here, I captured all the brush dabs myself from scans. In short I just wanted to show it's possible, that took me just a few minutes to make so get to it!

I didn't post my brushes it was just an example of what can be done in Painter using the Digital Watercolors.

You could try these ones (not mine, found on Painter forums) which do a great job and are fast, some brushes import bad to Painter 10 and 11 for some reason, but most are ok:

Anyway I no longer use Painter, gave up last year because if overheated my PC and I don't need it anymore.
