I think overall you could do with fewer lines in your sketches. Try to deliberately draw the line in the image or reference you are using, that way you will get better at naturally drawing anatomy...

    Nice stuff in here!

will hopefully get to the study of other body parts too! just have to plough through the book at least once, another good thing to do is to participate in the spartan exercises.... even if cant make the cut, at least die trying hahahah

i've tried... but maybe due to lack of understandings of the subject matter, i tend to amend and amend, also if i found a line or two that i like i might also go over it to reinforce it, works like an anchoring thing for me. i will also try with pencil in future, that way the construction lines are not so obvious as compare to a pen, as at this point, i still need those construction lines cos what i see in my mind and what i put on the paper still have lots of discrepancies. cheers

Judging from the Kamen Rider sketches, the Iron Man sketches, and that armored angel guy. You like to draw powered armor types, which I like. However, I also like your studies as well.

hey man. don't get discouraged with studies. in terms of getting frustrated, do some studies, and then do some finished pieces. definitely spartan camp would help, i think. keep at it man, you're getting better. take care.

purb36 thanks again for the timely tip, was getting a bit frustrated but tried out something else, plus CHOW and now going back to more studies.

FightingSeraph wow... even i didnt realise that! thanks for pointing it out, maybe there's a secret lurking powered armour urge lurking within! cheers

Max Challie thanks but still a long way to go...

brentos8 thanks, will need to study other parts of the hands and not just the palm, and come back again later, bottle neck at the moment for the wrist/ palm.

here's my first coloured CHOW thingy, thought would be a good idea to post it here for keeping track of crits & comments. need to look for threads on colour theory as well as bumskee's thread for some digital colouring tutorials, it should go parallel with the anatomy studies and all... i guess the more we learn, the more inadequacy we feel, (maybe until contentment?)... that should be motivation enough!!

robe done in 15 seconds with chinese brush and ink .... the monk was done in a coffee shop while waiting for my lunch appointment to turn up, 15-20 mins, hate to admit it, but it started out as a doodle, but i guess the whole CHOW thing has really gotten into me and even a coffee table doodle ended being used in photo shop to match the robes....

final composition, trying to frame the thing more like a chinese scroll painting. fiddle with the lable, blood moon monk in chinese somehow sounded corny (rhyme too much with a strayed monk), so ended up with blood moon master instead, which is what normally how you would address a monk in chinese culture anyway...hope dad enjoys it as much as i did!

    Hey Zenichi,

Thank you for commenting on my CHOW entry. It was quite helpful. Ill try to focus more on the next one.

You have a pretty cool sketchbook here. your dynamics lines/anatomy are really good and you do wonders with the bic pen (?) .

The human faces are a bit too stiff still, missing a flesh feel and personality.

I also love the poses u make and those horses.

Cheers man and please if u could drop me a few more lines of comments on my sketchbook it would be really cool.

    Mario

looks like youve been making some good progress, I also think that you could work on your line quality, drawing as few lines as necessary to do a drawing. Do you draw digitally cause Ive seen some people start with a crazy pencil base drawing and the put a new layer on top and draw nice neat lines then later hide the base drawing, that technique might work for you if you want to give it a try.

i guess it could, but for this particular exercise was to try and mesh two different style? but i agree that maybe a painterly style would still work, just that i dont have the skills, yet

unfortunately they are not style(s) ... just sketches and doodles but glad you enjoyed it! was just trying to do some re-take of the character, there wasnt any design element in the ironman sketches, was just trying to better understand the original design better by drawing it, i use this a lot to study and hopefully better understand the designing work done by the original designer.

thanks for pointing that out, i agree fully, they are mostly staring blank hahaha, will try more expressive take and subtle expression, basically just need to keep on doing the studies, hopefully i'll get to better grasp the various complex facial muscles!!!
i had fun at CHOW, besides the personal reason i mentioned above, i was just trying to have some fun away from the studies , but now fun session is over, back to studying the anatomy!!!!

hmmm..., i sketches here are done in a notebook and scanned, but digitally i tweak the level etc., i agree with the line thing, but at the sketch level, i needed that for the time being, also it allows me to record previous iterations. sometimes i do draw a different take based on the "see thru" on the second page, and it resulted in less doodley construction lines! or i can also go over them with a tracing paper in hand!!

some sketches me done during a long meeting, whenever the minister or member of parliament making political statements and any other non technical people giving an emotional speech- time for me to drift away sketching on the stack of high quality 120g A4s lying on the meeting desk!!

hey there! Excellent start to your sketch book man... very expressive poses. Perhaps a bit less crazy strokes would do you good? Or give the crazy strokes more direction and intent. right now some of the strokes don't seem to be helping much besides deaden the image a bit. You should check out Lukias sb. He does some really crazy pencil strokes but it feels really good because he's putting perhaps a bit more purpose in them(?)

either way keep it up dude. You'll be great in no time : )

Damn, alot of these designs are really cool!
As far as crits go, I think some female portrait studies and female nude studies would totally benefit you. Take special attention to the neck, hips and breasts.
That monk piece though is totally awesome, I love the mixing of inks and pencils, it really keeps a nice rhythm.

I see you're a big fan of Masked Rider too, it wasn't long ago when did anatomy studies using him as a reference. I see we have lots in common, I really dig those demon poses, and their muscle definitions. One thing you have that I don't is horse legs, am still having problems doing those. Whoosha!

thanks for the c&c, Lukias is my subscribed sb, so is yours I agree with you on Lukias's "crazy" strokes, it's making the characters he sketches comes alive! unfortunately the same cant be said about mine, at first i thought it was just the sketch-over on construction lines, but at closer look i've been too "liberal", should visualise more or a few definitive strokes. thanks for pointing it out again, i think cout<mecha & others also mentioned about my scribbley lines too. will definitely make an conscious effort to be more economical and "deliberate" with the lines in future, also look up some books on sketches (pens & pencils) from CA's ebook section, hopefully i can get some help ")

haha, yeah, i found out my inadequacy during the sonja CHOW on female body and faces. have found the reference thread in CA and will look it up in future. thanks!

Hey zenichi thank you very much for the crit and the nice words on my chow entry. had no time to finish it.

You have a really cool sketchbook here. Your figures and lines are really nice. Like the way you draw with the pen. I think the sketches you did for red sonja chow are much better and more powerful and dynamic as the one you choos to take as final.
So keep up the good work nice anatomy drawings as well

You have a really cool sketchbook here. Your figures and lines are really nice. Like the way you draw with the pen. I think the sketches you did for red sonja chow are much better and more powerful and dynamic as the one you choos to take as final.
So keep up the good work nice anatomy drawings as well
    See you soon!
pleasure, the c&c was part of my learning process too, i learn so much more about others work from c&c and also others inter c&c.
as for the red sonja CHOW, the coloured version was in fact an earlier sketch, but it was never submit for final as it was what it was- a sketch only. the later sketches were done as a continual exploration of the character as well as better understand the female anatomy, the pencil sketches were too masculine, the pen over wasnt much improvement either, but at least it doesnt look too transves...

arrgghhh.... got to stay away from CHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
some sketches to explore the ideas behind CHOW #125 for recording purposes...

Love the last character. The first sketch is very good. Reminds me somewhat of rich's (insane visions) old sketches.

    cheers!

Nice update. For your chow 125, i like the second one. It has more emotion in it. A more complete one would be great. Try playing with the angle.

awesome man. the chow's will do you much good in terms of practice and challenge. your faces and expressions since post 48 are looking a LOT better, and i also like the last character drawing for the chow 125 a lot; there's a lot of expression in his pose. try to use his eyes and hands to convey that extra subtlety in his feelings. can't wait to see how you do. g'luck man, and thanks for stopping by my book.
