It's great that you've been doing so many observational studies! Keep experimenting with color, and really try to push your values - your most successful paintings have been the ones where you pushed the contrast and really observed the values, like the onion paintings and color studies of people. Also, keep in mind how you use hard and soft edges in your paintings, because your brushstrokes tend to all have the same softness, and it makes your subjects appear a little blurry and undefined. Use varying hardness as a way to emphasize things and lead the viewer's eye around the painting. Keep up the great work!
cgaddict -> Thanks, dude! Trying to be as versatile as possible. I used Mudbox for that.
Sadako-xD -> Thanks! Haha, don't get me started on chocolate. . .
Tuesday -> Thanks a lot for the crits! You're pretty dead on with all of those. I will definitely be keepin an eye out for those! Thanks again!
Sorry for the giant hiatus here. I've been cranking out lessons in Maya which are all pretty boring so I haven't been making as many studies or work lately. But I have been working on an older painting that still needs some love. --> ( http://www.illustrationandrew.com/ho...SCENE01WEB.jpg ) The gray, cloudy blob behind her was intended to be an anonymous crowd buuuuuttttt, it's a blob. So I'm working on painting an army of figures to create some chaos as only a crowd can. They're all a bit sloppy yet, but I'll tighten them.
As always, C&C appreciated and thanks for looking!
Also, happy vernal equinox!

your last value study looks great
PeteJ ->Thanks!
Three more for the pile. Like the other ones, still a bit rough but I think I've got enough to start reworking the painting these are for. Updates on that later.
C&C always appreciated.
Thanks for looking!
Now that I finally painted enough figures, I could start on the actual painting! Hooray! This one is already a huge step up from the original. At least in terms of it's comp.
At any rate, any C&C would be much appreciated! It still has a long way to go!
I love your sketches, and especially the emotion in your last painting
spiralpen -> Thanks!
Some more figure studies. I haven't been posting these quite as much as I've been doing them, mainly because it seems to get a bit redundant after a while but I'm gonna post these a bit more often.
I've got an oil painting in the works as of this evening and hopefully I'll get some more work done on the digi painting from a couple posts up.
Peace
Here's some of today's work. More sketchy sketches. More news on the oil painting later. Mostly when I feel not lazy enough to take a picture of it.

Some Bridgman and a more personal drawing that I meant to upload last night. I should have a couple more pages to upload by tonight after work. See y'all then.

Got some master studies here: portrait from Velasquez's the Water Carrier and Bouguereau's Gabrielle. Finished up the drawing from before and also have my first sketches for the ultra B movie redux of Street Fighter's Sakura for the Brawl contest over at polycount.com . It's a sweet tourney, btw! I'll have some more on that character concepting later. There's a pretty big storm heading through my area, aka the east coast so I probably won't get around to it until tomorrow night.
C&C appreciated!

Very nice indeed! I think the faces are my favourite, I like how you surrounded them with a darker shade to accentuate the highlights, I think I can learn a thing or two from this SB, keep up the good work!
Invalid User -> Thanks!![]()
Didn't get quite so much done this week. I had a lot of things that needed to be taken care of in my life so hopefully this week will be clearer. I started the color portion of this painting from before. Any crits on color would be fantastic. Color is definitely still one of my weakest points. .

Sorry for the lack of updates here. My outside life's been busy lately. Here's some of todays work. Also have a master study on the way.
Sleep time.![]()
Finished this up today. The colors are still off but I'm not quite sure what to do about it yet.
C&C always appreciated!
You have great sketches, especially the medical related.
angriufos -> Thanks a lot!
Here's some quick work from today. Just some studies.
Now, to my day job and alter ego!
And also, happy Earth Day!
good show of improvement through your sketchbook. The faces on this page are much stronger even from post 77 to 100.
Colours are a weakness for me too. Your colours seem to be desaturated (I'm told I have the opposite problem, my paintings look like Lisa Frank went on a drug-trip) . If your working from a digital source it's important to note that the eye dropper steals colours about 25% desaturated.
When in doubt use something you think is too saturated. It's easier to go grayer if you get too out of control.
Below is an example - If I think the first colour is correct I'll use the second colour. The tone is the almost the same but you can see it's a richer hew.
Hope that helps!
Really like those clothed figure studies
I really like all the studies you are doing. You can tell when someone
is on the path to turn steps and strides into leaps and bounds.
just keep pushing hard at things specific things you want to learn. I suggest
this to everyone but it's what someone told me to do and I reaped the benefits.
Really hone in on something to learn, i.e values, and do a study as long as it takes
you to get it 100% perfect. My first one took me almost 50 hours, but its like rare
candy from pokemon instant level ups. (excuse the nerd reference =o )
Just have fun.

Great stuff, I love the hands and eyes in #98! Colour is something I'm just starting out with too, and it's quite a struggle, so I can sympathise with you.
Keep going!
Wow! Thanks for the comments, everyone!
Rhubix->Thanks! Haha! I'll keep that in mind. I've never noticed the dropper doing that although I've never paid too much attention to that tool. .Haha
Ok, I see. I definitely do tend to be too timid with color and usually can't tell until I get further into the process when majority of the color base is done. Then begin the delicate, time devouring task of figititing until it looks more right, or less wrong. . I'll keep that in mind. Thanks!
Teundeboer->Thanks!
Aveh-> Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it! It's definitely a true story. Grind, grind, grind!Haha, exactly, cause when a rare shiny pokemon comes your way, you gotta be ready!
Partisan->Haha, Thanks!
thesimplylife->Thanks! I will!
TheFallenAngel->Thanks! Color is a beast of mythical proportion. Like a leviathan or a minotaur, or something. .except enticing like a siren? I'm not sure where this is going now, but yeah. It's a battle for sure.
Alright, got a little figure studying done today. Also trying to go straight to color without working in the grayscale first. +gestures
I forgot how much fun these are.
C&C always appreciated!

Also, Ronald Jenkees does some niiiice electronica. Great stuff to work to. Check it out!

Couldn't get to sleep without doing another one of these.
Not as nice as the first but it was still a lot of fun.

I like your set of composition studies. I see your a fan of Sarah Simblet for anatomy studies. I love her work too.
Make a sketchbook happy, feed it a tip to improve!

Pigeonkill->Thanks! Sarah Simblet's art and books are amazing.
Just some studies here. And I finally finished fricken' Bridgman!
Also got a couple paintings going on. One is almost done which I'll definitely be posting.
Thanks for looking. C&C always appreciated.
Apparently this is what happens when I start combining things from labor movements and andrew jones while being really tired. .
Any C&C would be fantastic!
Btw, she's holding an arc welder for those who are curious.
Love it.
aly->Thanks!
I started this one back when CHOW was doing a bit about Atlantis. Yeah, that long ago. I had to stop and rearrange some life things. Good stuff though. I'll be around as much as I can.
Until next time. .
