Unhappy Digital Watercolor extends over layer boundaries horribly!

    Hi,

I'm using the digital watercolor ("soft diffused brush"-- no modifications). I want to paint over a layer and exceed it slightly.

However, everytime I exceed the previously-painted part of my layer, it acts like the paper's white instead of clear.

The first attached pic is when both "preserve transparency" and "pick up underlying color" are unchecked, and also when only "Pick up underlying color" is checked (same thing). The 2nd attachment is when only "Preserve transparency" is checked.

I'm not sure what other option to use to get the white to go away. At least it looks better in the 2nd (perhaps only the areas with a tiny bit of mostly-erased color are affected?) but not good enough.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

It looks like the Digital Watercolor paint is doing just what it should be doing. The problem is, it appears the Layer is not set to Composite Method Gel as it should be to produce the intended look.

If you create a new Layer (Composite Method Default), then paint on it using a Digital Watercolor variant, you'll see the Composite Method is automatically changed to Gel.

The reason for this is that Digital Watercolor (like traditional watercolor) is intended to appear transparent. Using Composite Method Gel accomplishes this and the white you're seeing will be transparent.

The same is true with Painter's Watercolor brush category. These brush variants can only be used on Watercolor Layers which are automatically set to Composite Method Gel. If we change the Composite Method from Gel to Default, we'll see white edges around the brush strokes.

If we've been using brush variants from other brush categories on a Layer, then begin painting with Digital Watercolor variants on the same Layer, the Layer Composite Method will not automatically be changed to Gel.

This means that, in order to retain the look of whatever brush variants we first used on that Layer, and also have the Digital Watercolor brush strokes look as intended, we need to create a new Layer and do the Digital Watercolor painting on that new Layer. Then the Layer's Composite Method will automatically be set to Gel the moment we begin painting.
